Shanghai to Hangzhou day trip: a West Lake visit and back to your hotel

Before you set out

1. Choose the return first, then issue both tickets. Search the exact station pair and date on 12306, or use the booking-channel comparison. A city-name search can mix stations. Save both train numbers, departures, arrivals and station names; a pending order or waitlist is not a confirmed return.
2. Book with the passport you will carry. The railway rules accept a foreign passport and require the original booked document for travel. Check the sale date and actual ticket availability on 12306. Follow the passport booking and station-entry steps before setting out if verification is incomplete.
3. Save your Shanghai hotel door and bag agreement. Keep its Chinese name/address, map pin and reception contact offline. For a same-hotel return, leave large bags only with reception's agreement and a receipt. If checking out, establish collection hours; a station locker is not part of this route. Keep your passport, medicines and battery with you.
4. Set two return alarms. One is the lakeshore departure below; the other allows the final Shanghai station-to-hotel leg. Check the Hangzhou timetable, dated notices and Shanghai Metro for your date. A late intercity train does not guarantee a connecting metro.

Check the weather and follow posted path closures. If wind, lightning or heavy rain makes the shore unsafe, move this outing. This page assumes you already have a Shanghai bed and a free day; the 11:00 Pudong arrival to a 09:00 next-day obligation has its own stay-in-Shanghai answer.

Getting there and getting back

Default station pair: Shanghai Hongqiao → Hangzhou East. Use it only when both issued orders name those stations. If either differs, follow its row below. Outward and return stations can differ; check all four ends before paying.

Shanghai hotel door → the booked railway station

• Hongqiao order: from a People's Square hotel, walk to 人民广场站 and take Line 2 westbound, checking that the train stops at 虹桥火车站. Hotels near Line 10 can use a train actually bound for 虹桥火车站, rather than its 航中路 branch. Follow railway-departure / 铁路出发 signs from the metro to the booked gate.
• Shanghai order: from 人民广场, take Line 1 toward 富锦路 to 上海火车站, then follow railway entrance signs. From another hotel, save the route from its actual door to this station; do not reuse the Hongqiao transfer.

Editorial allowance: 45–75 minutes from a central hotel door to Hongqiao, or 25–45 minutes to Shanghai Station, followed by at least 45 minutes for railway orientation, identity/security checks and the gate. Add time for first-time passport verification, crowds or bags. Gates close before departure; the station's posted cutoff controls. A taxi can take you from the hotel door to the same named station, with a live quote and traffic allowance.

Hangzhou arrival platform → No. 2 Park lakeshore

• Arrive at 杭州东 / Hangzhou East: follow metro / 地铁 signs inside the railway station to 火车东站, Lines 1/4. Take Line 1 toward 湘湖 / Xianghu to 龙翔桥. Going outside to the Line 6/19 East Square station adds a different route. Allow 40–60 minutes from the rail arrival platform to the shore.
• Arrive at 杭州 / Hangzhou Railway Station: reach 城站 / Chengzhan at the railway station; its A exit connects with the railway door. Take Line 1 toward 萧山国际机场 / Xiaoshan International Airport, passing 定安路 before 龙翔桥. Allow 25–40 minutes platform-to-shore.

Final walk, for either arrival: use 龙翔桥 Exit C. Follow 平海路 / Pinghai Road west to 湖滨路 / Hubin Road at the lake, then turn south along the shore, past 三公园 / No. 3 Park, to 二公园 / No. 2 Park. Allow 10–15 minutes from exit to this starting point, included in the transfer ranges above. The operator's map labels C, rather than old C4. If C is controlled, ask station staff for the open 西湖 / 湖滨 exit, then regain 平海路 and the same shore.

Buy a single-journey metro ticket for 龙翔桥 or use your working local code; ask customer service if payment fails. The operator's fare query, checked 29 September 2026, gives CNY 4 from 火车东站 and CNY 2 from 城站, one way. This route includes no island-boat purchase.

No. 2 Park → the return train → your Shanghai hotel

1. From 二公园, walk north along 湖滨路 to 平海路, then east to 龙翔桥 C entrance. From 断桥 or 白堤, first retrace the shore to this saved approach. Use the return station on the issued ticket, even if you arrived elsewhere.
2. For 杭州东: take Line 1 toward 萧山国际机场 to 火车东站 and follow railway departures / 铁路出发 to the booked gate. For 杭州: take Line 1 toward 湘湖 to 城站 and use the A / 火车站 connection. Budget 90–120 minutes from 二公园 to a Hangzhou East departure, or 75–105 minutes to a Hangzhou Station departure, including a 45-minute railway buffer. Add any further shore walk before these allowances.
3. Arrive back at 上海虹桥: for a People's Square hotel, take Line 2 eastbound, checking 人民广场 is served, and finish the saved walk to reception. Arrive at 上海: use Line 1 toward 莘庄 for 人民广场 and the hotel walk. A different hotel needs its own saved line/exit or signed taxi pickup. Collect bags before reception's agreed deadline.

Cost: add both issued rail fares, two Shanghai local journeys, meals and optional purchases. Hangzhou metro adds CNY 8 for an East Station round trip, CNY 4 for a Hangzhou Station round trip, or CNY 6 for one of each, at the checked fares. Rail price and duration come from the actual orders; there is no fixed whole-trip fare or future last-train promise. If Shanghai metro will be over, budget the station's signed taxi pickup to the saved hotel address before accepting that train.

Hangzhou day trip or overnight?

• Day trip: one lake block

  Keep your Shanghai bed and light day bag. Choose this when confirmed trains leave at least 3–4 hours at the shore for walking, a meal and pauses, after all station legs. The trade-off is losing much of the day to two city transfers.

• Overnight: an evening or a second experience

  Choose this for a lake evening or a separate Lingyin/tea-hill block. Stay around 湖滨 / 龙翔桥 so the lake and Line 1 return share a base. Secure a room and rearrange Shanghai bag collection before releasing the day-return ticket.

• Stay in Shanghai: too little usable time

  If the usable shore block is under two hours, there is no confirmed return, paths close, or tomorrow's Shanghai obligation leaves no recovery room, use a Shanghai city block. A faster train does not remove station and hotel transfers.

Named overnight door: Grand Hyatt Hangzhou · 杭州君悦酒店, 湖滨路28号 is a lakefront example in this base, rather than a budget recommendation. Its operator lists the address and +86 571 8779 1234. Check the actual room, cancellation terms, foreign-passport check-in and late reception before booking; this page has not tested a stay. The Hangzhou guide compares the base and another named hotel. Take overnight essentials if large bags stay in Shanghai, or confirm the bag move first.

Use the reserved Lingyin visit as a separate block. A lake walk, temple hill and tea village together need a different allocation from this day-trip default.

A West Lake route with a clear turn-back point

The public lakeshore is free. Begin at 二公园临湖步道 / No. 2 Park lakeside path, beside the separately ticketed 湖滨二公园码头. The changing view is the point: the shopping city behind you, open water ahead, then the low bridge and causeway against the northern hills. Times and distances below are editorial estimates with pauses, rather than a measured accessible-route audit.

1. Short shore: No. 2 Park → No. 4 Park → same entrance

   Walk north beside the water through 三公园 to 四公园, opposite the Grand Hyatt lakefront, then retrace to 二公园. Allow 45–75 minutes and roughly 1–1.5 km total. This keeps a lake view without committing to a bridge crossing; sit or turn sooner when you have had enough.

2. Default walk: No. 2 Park → Broken Bridge → same shore back

   Continue north along 湖滨路 to the north shore, keeping the lake on your left, then follow 北山街's lakeside path west to 断桥 / Broken Bridge, at 白堤's eastern end. Allow 2–3 hours and roughly 4–5 km return. Turn at 断桥 rather than starting across 白堤 if the return alarm is close.

3. Longer block: add Bai Causeway and Gushan, then retrace

   From 断桥, follow 白堤 west toward 孤山 / Gushan. Use 孤山公园, listed at 孤山北路3号, as the farthest named stop; return by the same causeway and east shore. Allow 3–5 hours and roughly 6–8 km total, depending on the Gushan detour. Stop before the causeway if heat, legs, crowds or the return budget no longer fit. A whole-lake circuit is a different outing.

Keep the meal near the east-shore start so you can regain the same metro entrance. Skip a cross-lake food detour when it would use the return margin. The Hangzhou West Lake answer places these walks in the wider city choice.

Walk or take a West Lake boat?

Walk for a predictable Shanghai day return. Consider a boat when the island garden at 小瀛洲 / Three Pools Mirroring the Moon is the experience you want. The island-boat section distinguishes it from the free shore.

At 湖滨二公园码头, ask for 三潭印月上岛游船 and establish today's boat type, fare, island admission, queue and last mainland return before paying. For this day trip, request a return landing at 湖滨二公园码头 and confirm it is permitted by the actual ticket and running service. A circuit cruise, hand-rowed boat or different operator need not include island entry.

Board only with a confirmed mainland landing and time that preserve your station buffer. If 二公园 return is unavailable, map the offered landing's transfer to your booked station before buying. 花港观鱼 is on another shore; it does not finish at 龙翔桥. If the answer, queue or weather is uncertain, keep the short shore walk. Use today's pier board for price and last sailing; do not apply a past holiday timetable to this return.

If a leg fails

Outward train late, or a different Hangzhou arrival station

Read the actual name and use its metro row above. Recalculate the shore block against the unchanged return. Keep 二公园 → 四公园 if time remains; if the return buffer consumes the visit, stay near 龙翔桥 for a meal and return to the booked station. Skip the boat, 白堤 and west hills.

Rain increases, lightning appears, or the path is controlled

From 白堤 / 孤山, begin retracing toward 断桥 and the east shore while open, following staff's route around any closure. From Hubin, leave the exposed water for the 平海路 / 龙翔桥 approach, shelter in an open building away from trees, and return by Line 1 when safe. A boat is not a rain shelter. If closure blocks the walk, ask scenic staff for the open road exit and arrange a car from an allowed pickup to the exact station.

You will miss the return, or the gate has closed

Stop sightseeing. Before departure, try the issuer's change function; if it fails, take the original passport and order to the station's staffed ticket window. 12306 allows one change subject to seats; after departure, request it before that day's 24:00 deadline. A later train is not guaranteed; fees depend on the replacement. If none remains, confirm a Hangzhou room and next-day train, then contact the Shanghai hotel about your room and bags. Metro code fails, or Shanghai metro is over

Ask metro customer service for a single-journey ticket while service runs. After service, use the railway station's signed taxi queue or confirmed ride-hail pickup, show the saved Chinese hotel address and inspect the live fare. Do not substitute the airport as the destination. With a tight next-day flight or appointment, choose an earlier return or keep the day in Shanghai.

Bag collection no longer fits

Contact Shanghai reception before its collection deadline and agree a later pickup. For an overnight change, confirm what can stay, what you must carry and next-day collection. Use the train luggage guide if bringing the large bag instead.

The operator currently displays an April 2025 Longxiangqiao street map; on-site control can change exit availability. Transfer, walking and buffer ranges are editorial allowances, not field measurements or guaranteed timings.
