First two minutes: do not discard the original order

  1. Read the issued ticket for the missed leg: passenger, departure station, train number, date and scheduled departure. If the station name is the problem, use the exact-station check.
  2. Check whether that train has actually departed. The 12306 delay query is a reference; its own notice says the station announcement controls. Ask station staff if the display and the app disagree.
  3. Keep the original passport, order number, both leg records if this is a connection, and any official delay or cancellation notice. Capture the live order status privately before changing or paying again.

Success signal: you have an issued replacement for the correct passenger and station, or an official processed refund/cancellation result. A request, pending charge or verbal expectation is not the result.

Choose the branch from the departure clock

1

The train has not departed

Open the original order now and compare its actual change and refund options, seats, fees and handling cutoff. A refund is ordinarily requested before the ticketed train departs under Articles 45–46 of the 2026 railway rules. If a booking agency issued the ticket, contact that channel as well; its processing cutoff may be earlier. If you already passed ticket check, tell station staff before the departure, as Article 19 requires.

2

It departed, but it is still the ticket date

China Railway allows one change only when seats are available. Request it before 24:00 Beijing time on the ticket date. A change to another train that day has no change fee; a change to a later date within the presale period can cost 40% of the lower of the old and new fares. The fare difference may also be collected or returned under the applicable rules. Confirm the total before accepting.

3

The date has ended, or no seat is offered

Do not board another train using the missed ticket. Ask the official channel or station office to verify whether any ticket-specific exception remains; otherwise price a new journey. The ordinary refund request closes before departure, and the rules exclude refunding a ticket changed after departure.

A late incoming train: two different ticket states

The 2026 Railway Passenger Transport Rules, Article 3, define linked tickets as multiple segments whose first arrival and next departure stations are the same or in the same city. That definition alone is not a refund approval.

You have not boarded the delayed train and want to cancel

Ask for the delayed train's no-fee refund before it actually departs from your ticketed station, as Article 51 requires. If your linked tickets were bought before the delay information was announced, ask railway staff to assess a together refund under the same article before processing one order alone. The order times, delay notice and actual departure matter. If you process the legs separately, ordinary refund limits can apply.

You rode the delayed first leg and missed the next train

The first leg was used: do not assume it can be refunded. Present both orders, their station names and the official delay information to railway staff. Ask them to assess the unused onward leg, the railway's responsibility and any available arrangement under Articles 33 and 50–51. The specific used and unused portions, ticket status and timing need railway confirmation. This page does not promise free rebooking or a full refund of a journey already partly taken.

If the onward train has not left and you still want to travel, ask for the viable change option before cancelling. If the onward train has left, keep the staff record or processed order result before paying for a replacement. Unrelated bus, flight, hotel and attraction orders are outside this railway rule.

Use the channel that can act on your ticket

  • 12306 electronic-payment order: open its order-change flow and read the final offered option. The 2026 rules, Articles 29–30, also allow a station ticket window with the original purchase ID.
  • Cash purchase or an order the app cannot handle: take the original passport and order number to the staffed ticket window. Do not assume a kiosk supports your ID or transaction.
  • Agency order: contact the issuing platform to clarify its processing state, then show the issued rail order to station staff for an eligible station-window action. The platform service fee and its cutoff can be different from the railway rule; the channel comparison explains the layers.

Keep the passport used to buy the ticket. If the order is still processing, resolve duplicate-purchase risk before paying again.

Three worked decisions

A
YOUR ARRIVAL IS LATE

Wrong station; original train leaves in 20 minutes

Compare actual travel and gate closure before attempting a city transfer. If arrival is implausible, ask the ticket office or issuing channel about the original order immediately. A wrong station by itself does not create a railway-delay remedy.

B
TRAIN ALREADY LEFT

It is 18:00 and another train has seats

Check whether the one allowed change is unused and whether the available train is same-day. A successful same-day change has no change fee, but seats and any fare difference still matter. Wait for a newly issued order before heading to the gate.

C
RAILWAY DELAY

You rode a late first train and missed the second

Show both issued tickets and delay information to station staff. Ask them to assess the unused onward leg and railway responsibility. The first leg was used; do not assume it can be refunded or that the next seat is free.

What this guide cannot promise

  • A seat on the next train or an unlimited right to change the same ticket
  • A refund after an ordinary missed departure, or a refund after a post-departure change
  • Free rebooking for every missed connection, even when a first train was delayed
  • The mainland change and refund rules for Hong Kong West Kowloon, China–Laos cross-border trains or special ticket products
  • A particular agency response time or a railway remedy for separately booked hotels and flights

For identity verification and manual station entry after a new ticket is issued, see the passport rail guide.

KEEP THESE TOGETHER

Your recovery record

  • Original passport and issued ticket/order number for each leg
  • Exact Chinese station names and scheduled departure times
  • Official delay notice or staff confirmation if railway delay is involved
  • Screen or receipt showing the completed change, refund or replacement issuance
