Stay in Shanghai. Landing at Pudong at 11:00 and needing to be back in Shanghai by 09:00 the next morning leaves 22 hours in total, including the airport, transfers, sleep and the return. It is not a useful window for an overnight in Suzhou or Hangzhou if your aim is to see their main sights.

One early arrival before the rest of the trip

The traveller arrives one day earlier than the other two adults and wants to be back in Shanghai by 09:00. Choose where to sleep around the actual place you need to reach that morning; do not treat a return to any Shanghai station as the end of that transfer.

Use the afternoon without another hotel move

  1. Reserve a cancellable Shanghai room near where you need to be the next morning. After leaving Pudong, go to that hotel and ask to store your bag if the room is not ready.
  2. If the hotel is in central Shanghai and you have energy, keep the outing to East Nanjing Road and the Bund waterfront, have dinner in that area, then return to the same hotel. This is a short walk-and-dinner plan, not a checklist of timed attractions.
  3. If your 09:00 destination makes an airport-area hotel the practical choice, or you leave the airport late, eat and rest near the hotel. Do not add a cross-city evening just to fill the gap.
  4. Before sleeping, confirm the route and departure time to your exact 09:00 destination. Leave room for the transfer; being back somewhere in Shanghai is not the same as reaching that place.

What about Suzhou or Hangzhou?

Hangzhou is too much extra travel for this particular gap. Suzhou is only an optional visit with a return to Shanghai the same evening: decide after airport exit, leave the bag and hotel in Shanghai, and buy a dated return that leaves a comfortable margin. If the plan depends on rushing the last train back, keep the Shanghai outing. Neither side trip is needed to make this day worthwhile.

If the flight, border process or baggage collection is delayed, shorten the local outing or rest; the next morning stays protected. An overnight elsewhere is worth reconsidering only if the next-day requirement moves much later and you have usable outward/return transport plus a place to stay. No particular flight or train has been assumed.
