Shanghai travel guide: sights, river views and day trips

Shanghai puts the Bund's older riverfront opposite Pudong's towers, with gardens and neighbourhood walks beyond the skyline. For two to three full sightseeing days, use a west-bank afternoon and evening, a Pudong museum-and-river day, then the old city and tree-lined streets; Disney or an out-of-town visit needs another day.

Lujiazui and an observation deck · 陆家嘴·观景台 — the skyline viewed from within it · Pudong. 2–3 h · Shanghai Tower CNY 180 standard adult admission · Book for a clear day · Best before sunset and after dark. Gate: tower last entry listed as 21:00; use a real-name ticket and booked passport. Go: before sunset only when visibility justifies paying.
  • 3. Yu Garden and the old city · 豫园·老城厢 — a classical garden amid old-city lanes · Old city. 2–3 h · CNY 40 peak / 30 off-peak · Closed Mondays except holidays · Ticket windows at both gates · Best at the 09:00 opening. Gate: garden last entry 16:00 and ordinary Monday closure; use gate ticket windows and bring ID for any concession.

Shanghai Museum East · 上海博物馆东馆 — the permanent collection in Pudong · Pudong. 2–3 h · Free general admission · Closed Tuesdays except holidays · No reservation for ordinary individual entry · Best on a weekday morning. Gate: last entry 17:00 and ordinary Tuesday closure; bring original ID, with separate tickets for special shows.

Former French Concession: Wukang Road and Anfu Road · 衡复风貌区（武康路·安福路） — plane-tree streets and early-twentieth-century buildings · French Concession & Jing'an. 2–3 h · Free public walk · Best in the morning before the pavements fill. Gate: public streets need no booking; individual interiors set hours.

Worth a visit when time and interests fit

  • 6. Nanjing Road East and People's Square · 南京东路·人民广场 — pedestrian shopping route toward the river · Bund & People's Square. 1–2 h · Free streets; People's Square museum exhibition ticketed · Museum closed Mondays. Gate: street access is flexible; the museum shuts ordinary Mondays and its current exhibition requires a passport-linked ticket. Go: an afternoon walk that reaches #1 by dusk.
  • 7. Xintiandi · 新天地 — restored shikumen lanes with restaurants · Old city. 1–2 h · Free public streets; spending optional. Gate: public lanes need no ticket; restaurants set their own hours. Go: around a meal after #3.
  • 8. Tianzifang · 田子坊 — shops and workshops inside residential lanes · Old city. 1–2 h · Free public lanes; spending optional. Gate: public lanes need no ticket; shop hours vary. Go: earlier in the day before crowding, or after #3.
  • 9. Jing'an Temple and West Nanjing Road · 静安寺·南京西路 — active temple beside a shopping corridor · French Concession & Jing'an. 1–2 h · Temple admission on its official notice · Public street free. Gate: read temple hours and admission in its official WeChat entry or posted notice; the public shopping street is independent. Go: with #5 or a west-city meal.
  • 10. Huangpu River cruise · 黄浦江游船 — a moving view of both riverbanks · Bund & People's Square. 1–2 h · Night sailing CNY 120–150 by season · Reserve an evening sailing. Gate: choose the actual sailing, pier and check-in on the issued ticket; weather may cancel. Go: evening only if it beats a free Bund walk for you.
  • 11. Zhujiajiao water town · 朱家角古镇 — Shanghai's canal-town outing · Out of centre. Half a day · Free public lanes; three-site pass CNY 60; boat extra. Gate: public lanes are free; ticketed sights and boats generally run about 08:30–17:00. Go: weekday morning, leaving time for the Line 17 return.
  • 12. Jade Buddha Temple · 玉佛寺 — working Buddhist temple near central Shanghai · French Concession & Jing'an. 1–2 h · Free ordinary entry; festival sessions may need reservations. Gate: ordinary entry needs no booking and usually runs 08:00–16:30; some festival sessions require reservations. Go: earlier for quiet halls.

  • 13. West Bund art museums · 西岸艺术区（龙美术馆·西岸美术馆） — riverside museum pair · Xuhui riverside. Half a day · River walk free; exhibition tickets vary · Opening days vary by museum. Gate: West Bund Museum closes Mondays and last entry is 17:00; Long Museum shows and hours vary. Go: select a real exhibition first, then walk the river.
  • 14. Xujiahui · 徐家汇（天主教堂） — historic church and urban centre · Xuhui riverside. 1–2 h · Free church exterior · Interior free Tue–Sat. Gate: cathedral interior is Tue–Sat 09:00–16:00, last entry 15:30, but closes on the first Friday morning of each month and reopens at 13:00; exterior is free. Xujiahuiyuan hours via Shanghai government Go: within that window if the interior matters.
  • 15. Shanghai Natural History Museum · 上海自然博物馆 — natural-science galleries for families · Out of centre / family. 2–3 h · CNY 30 adult · Closed Tuesdays except holidays · Book a real-name ticket. Gate: last entry 16:00, ordinary Tuesday closure; use a real-name passport ticket booked within the seven-day window. Go: morning with children.
  • 16. Shanghai Disney Resort · 上海迪士尼度假区 — a separate theme-park day · Out of centre / family. Full day · Dated admission price in the official calendar · Buy for your visit date. Gate: park hours and price vary by date; bring the ticket-booking ID and read ride heights for your group. Go: a full day separate from the city walk.

These tiers are a first-visit starting point; follow your own interests. The Bund and People's Square are on the west bank; Lujiazui and Shanghai Museum East are east of the Huangpu. The old city sits south of the main shopping axis, while the tree-lined streets and Jing'an lie west. Group nearby sights, then choose a hotel base and plan arrival.

How long, and what goes together

Allow about two to three full sightseeing days for the five must-sees. Count Shanghai Disney, Zhujiajiao, Suzhou and Hangzhou as separate outings, and exclude arrival and departure days from the full-day total. We recommend a west-bank afternoon and evening, a Pudong day, then an old-city and tree-street block for a mixed first visit.

Main combinations

  • 1. West bank into the evening — #6 Nanjing Road and People's Square → #1 Bund; optionally #10 cruise. Allow an afternoon and evening. Walk east from People's Square so the skyline lights up as you reach the river. The People's Square museum closes Mondays and its current special exhibition needs a ticket.
  • 2. Pudong — #4 Shanghai Museum East → #2 Lujiazui. Allow a full day. Line 2 connects the museum's Shanghai Science and Technology Museum stop with Lujiazui for a pre-sunset deck visit. Shanghai Museum East closes Tuesdays.
  • 3. Old city — #3 Yu Garden in the morning → #7 Xintiandi → #8 Tianzifang. Allow a full day. Start with the garden's timed opening, then use the flexible neighbourhoods after it closes. Yu Garden closes Mondays and has no luggage storage.
  • 4. Plane-tree streets — #5 Wukang and Anfu Roads → #9 Jing'an. Allow half a day. The streets and temple put architecture, shops and a meal in the same west-city arc. Expect slower walking on busy weekends.

Add a group that matches your interests

Stay on one side of the Huangpu River each day; crossing back and forth costs the most time. The People's Square museum and Yu Garden close on ordinary Mondays, while Shanghai Museum East closes on Tuesdays: use Monday for Pudong and Tuesday for the old city. Keep at least one evening for the river: the Bund, an observation deck or a cruise. With one day, walk #6 → #1 into the evening, and cross to #2 for the view if time allows. We recommend People's Square or East Nanjing Road for a first visit: Lines 1, 2 and 8 meet here, Line 2 runs straight to Pudong Airport and Shanghai Museum East, and you can walk to the Bund. The trade-off is crowds and higher room prices.

Getting to Shanghai

  • Pudong Airport (PVG · 浦东国际机场): Metro Line 2 to People's Square is about one hour and CNY 7. The Maglev reaches Longyang Road in eight minutes for CNY 50 one-way, then needs a metro or road transfer. The city's planning estimate for a licensed taxi to People's Square is about CNY 180 and 50 minutes; use only the signed terminal taxi queue. After metro hours, the airport's Shouhang night bus runs from the terminals to Hongqiao hub via central stops including East Yan'an Road/Zhejiang Road; fares are CNY 18–34. Match the stop to your hotel and plan the final leg before boarding.
  • Hongqiao Airport (SHA · 虹桥国际机场): Terminal 1 has Line 10; Terminal 2 has Lines 2 and 10. A central taxi is roughly CNY 100–150 and 30 minutes in the city's planning guide, subject to traffic and meter. Hongqiao Airport T2 and Hongqiao Railway Station are connected but are separate stations.

To the default People's Square / East Nanjing Road base: at PVG T1&2 or SHA T2, follow the airport Metro Line 2 signs and ride to People's Square. Exit using the saved Chinese hotel name and map pin, then walk to Conrad Shanghai (listed above about 3 minutes from the station) or Park Hotel (about 1 minute). At SHA T1, use Line 10 to East Nanjing Road for Shanghai Fish Inn East Nanjing Road, about 3 minutes from that station; for Conrad or Park Hotel, change there to Line 2 for People's Square. The PVG CNY 7 / one-hour estimate is the Line 2 station-to-station leg, not baggage claim, station access or hotel check-in. Verify the actual first/last trains at every station for your flight date. If the connection is closed, use the signed terminal taxi queue or the confirmed PVG night bus plus a separately planned hotel last leg; ask the hotel about late arrival, especially Park Hotel's listed 23:30 check-in cutoff. Shanghai Airport Authority transport guide, updated June 2026 - Between the airports: The Airport Link Line takes about 40 minutes between PVG T1&2 and SHA T2 and lists CNY 26 end to end. The 1 April 2026 timetable sets the last PVG T1&2 → SHA T2 train at 22:15. Add terminal and waiting time; use the travel-date timetable for any service change. Rail station to the same hotel base: after the signed station exit, use Line 2 from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station → People's Square, Line 1 from Shanghai Railway Station → People's Square, or Line 1 from Shanghai South Railway Station → People's Square. From People's Square, walk to the Conrad or Park Hotel entrance with its saved Chinese name and map pin. For the Fish Inn instead, use Line 2 onward to East Nanjing Road and walk about three minutes. The ticket's full station name decides which starting point applies; check the actual Metro station timetable, any holiday closure and the hotel's check-in terms. If the subway no longer runs or the last walk is unsuitable, use the signed railway-station taxi queue to the hotel's Chinese address. Getting around Shanghai

  • Metro: Use it for the main cross-city moves. Since 28 June 2025, eligible contactless foreign Visa, Mastercard, Amex and JCB cards can tap through the network; if a card fails, go to the station service centre. Use the Metro route planner and station timetable separately.
  • Taxi or DiDi: With luggage or after metro hours, use a licensed taxi queue or book DiDi in the app; save the hotel's Chinese name and map pin, and decline drivers who approach you.
  • Crossing the river: Lines 2 and 14 link the main banks; the pedestrian Dongjin ferry between East Jinling Road and Dongchang Road has a CNY 2 fare and a daytime-only published schedule. Check the operator's current sailing hours before boarding; use the metro for an evening crossing.
  • At the station: Expect security screening. Use Amap or Apple Maps for the station-to-door walk and the payment recovery guide if one card or wallet fails.

For a short first visit, start with the free Bund walk and add one paid viewpoint only if it brings the view you want. The daytime pedestrian ferry is transport across the river, not the evening sightseeing cruise.

We recommend walking #6 eastward into #1 at dusk, then taking #10 only if an evening sailing suits your budget and weather. The public promenade is the fallback when a boat is cancelled.

1. The Bund · 外滩

The Bund is Shanghai's most direct first view of the city's two eras: early-twentieth-century bank and hotel facades behind you, Pudong towers across the water. Come near sunset for daylight detail, then stay as the opposite bank lights up. This is a public walk, so poor visibility can be handled by moving it to another evening without losing a ticket.

Turn away from the skyline occasionally. The west-bank buildings tell the story of the trading port: banks, trading houses and clubs gathered along this stretch, leaving a line of substantial commercial facades. Read the river in both directions, with the older buildings close enough to study and the towers forming a distant composition. For the walk below, look at the Peace Hotel end first, then the Customs House and former HSBC building as you move south. Daylight is useful for the west-bank architecture; dusk adds a different reason to linger at the water. A bridge or a single facade can be a short pause within this walk rather than another separately scheduled attraction.

  • Time: 1–2 h for the walk and skyline stops.

  • Getting there: Lines 2/10 East Nanjing Road, then walk east along Nanjing Road to the river; from #6 you arrive on foot. For a one-way walk with no backtracking, start instead at Tiantong Road (Lines 10/12) and cross Waibaidu Bridge first. Metro sightseeing guide
  • How to visit: Enter from East Nanjing Road, pause at Chen Yi Square for the Pudong skyline, then follow the riverside walk below and leave toward Yuyuan Garden station.

Walk: Lines 2/10 East Nanjing Road → Chen Yi Square / Peace Hotel → Monument to the People's Heroes → Waibaidu Bridge → back south past the Customs House and former HSBC building → Asia Building → East Jinling Road riverfront viewpoint → west along East Jinling Road to Lines 10/14 Yuyuan Garden. 6. Nanjing Road East and People's Square · 南京东路·人民广场

Use this as a west-to-east walk that ends at the Bund, and fold the shopping street into the same outing. The People's Square museum is currently a ticketed special-exhibition venue, and the permanent collections are at #4 Shanghai Museum East. Choose a museum session first if you want the exhibition, then let the street timing flex.

  • Hours: People's Square and the pedestrian street are accessible throughout the day; stores set their own hours. Shanghai Museum People's Square opens 09:00–17:00, last entry 15:00, and closes ordinary Mondays during the current exhibition. Museum visitor notice

10. Huangpu River cruise · 黄浦江游船

Choose a night sailing for both illuminated banks in one view, especially when a shorter promenade walk suits you. A cruise adds a fixed check-in and boat time to a flexible Bund evening, so buy it only after seeing the departure pier and weather. The pedestrian Dongjin ferry is a different, daytime-only cross-river service.

  • Hours: Evening departures vary by day and operator; use the selected sailing time on the city cruise guide.
  • Tickets: Night sailing CNY 150 (26 Feb–25 Nov) / CNY 120 (26 Nov–25 Feb); day sailing CNY 120 / 100 in the same seasons. Public-holiday fare CNY 150. Children under 1.3 m free; children 1.3–1.5 m and visitors aged 70+ half price.   • Getting there: Walk south from #1's Bund promenade to the signed Shiliupu pier area, or use Line 10 Yuyuan Garden and follow your booking's pier map. District pier guide
  • How to visit: Bund promenade → pier named on your ticket, commonly Shiliupu → QR and identity queue → open deck for the two skylines → the ticketed arrival pier. Board at least 30 minutes before departure. Save its Chinese name offline; use the Bund promenade if weather cancels sailing.

Pudong

We recommend #4 Shanghai Museum East before #2 Shanghai Tower so the museum's earlier closing time leaves enough time for the collection visit. Use the Lujiazui public riverside as the clear-weather alternative to the deck.

2. Lujiazui and an observation deck · 陆家嘴·观景台

We recommend Shanghai Tower as the default paid deck: its Top of Shanghai Observatory is on the 118th floor at 546 m, higher than the other commonly visited Lujiazui viewpoints. Reach the area before sunset if you want daylight geography as well as night lights. Buy only after checking visibility; haze can erase the benefit of the higher ticket.

  • Hours: The official tourism listing gives 08:30–22:00 with last entry 21:00 for the Top of Shanghai Observatory; special dates can change admission. Tourism listing
  • Tickets: Standard adult observatory admission CNY 180 in the 2026 city price notice; child CNY 90 and senior CNY 120 in that notice. The tower lists authorised online channels and passport real-name purchase. The CNY 268 ticket adds the Sky632 art space.
  • Time: 2–3 h for the precinct and one deck.

  • Getting there: Line 2 or 14 to Lujiazui; follow the Shanghai Tower / 上海中心大厦 pedestrian signs and enter through the public observatory entrance. City subway sightseeing guide
  • How to visit: Lujiazui station → public riverfront for the west-bank view → Shanghai Tower observatory entrance → 118th-floor deck → public lobby exit. Bring the booked original passport and leave a pre-sunset buffer after #4; the riverfront remains a free alternative. Compare all three decks, dated tickets and the hotel return →

Other decks: Oriental Pearl's 259 m glass corridor comes in named Sky Walking bundles; the May 2026 city list puts Sky Walking + Art Toy Museum at CNY 259 as a dated regular-price reference; your visit needs the seller's final total. The same list puts Jinmao's indoor 88th-floor observatory at CNY 120 standard adult; its outdoor Skywalk is a separate product. Shanghai World Financial Center had 94–100F viewing for a 2026 event ending 31 August, but the operator page lacks a current dated public ticket and passport route. Require both from the operator for your visit.

4. Shanghai Museum East · 上海博物馆东馆

This is the default museum for Shanghai Museum's permanent collection, with bronze, ceramics and calligraphy housed in Pudong. The People's Square building is currently devoted to a ticketed Americas exhibition. Morning entry gives you room to choose a few galleries rather than racing across the entire building; Monday is particularly useful because the East venue is open while Yu Garden and the west museum are closed.

Choose a question for each gallery instead of trying to finish every floor. In bronzes, compare forms and surface decoration; in ceramics, follow changes in shape and glaze; in calligraphy, look at brush movement and spacing with the help of interpretation. These are different ways into the museum's collection of Chinese material culture. Choose two or three galleries that interest you and use the floor guide below to connect them.   • Getting there: Line 2 to Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, Exit 8; enter via the B1 East Gate near Dingxiang Road after security. Museum visitor guide
  • How to visit: B1 East Gate → ancient bronze gallery → ceramics gallery → calligraphy gallery → signed public exit. Use the museum's floor guide to locate the galleries and shorten the route to two if your pace is slower; special exhibitions have separate ticket terms.

Don't miss: Bronze, ceramics and calligraphy give three distinct materials and periods without trying to finish every floor. The museum's collection overview identifies those permanent holdings.

For English interpretation, the museum's service page lists English audio guides for the permanent collection at CNY 40 per set and paid English staff-led tours from CNY 150 per visitor per visit. Choose the audio guide for an independent visit; book a human guide through the museum if you need one.

The old city and Xintiandi

We recommend #3 Yu Garden as the fixed morning stop, then use #7 and #8 as flexible afternoon choices. The public shopping lanes outside the garden have different hours and admission from the garden itself.

Only time for one more neighbourhood? Choose #7 Xintiandi for a seated meal among adapted shikumen lanes, or #8 Tianzifang for smaller studios and shop browsing in tighter residential lanes. The city tourism descriptions and Tianzifang listing describe different uses; individual restaurants and shops set their own hours. If the streets feel too crowded, finish after Yu Garden and take Lines 10/14 from Yuyuan Garden station instead of collecting both stops.

3. Yu Garden and the old city · 豫园·老城厢

The classical garden is the reason to enter the old city early; its ponds, rockeries and halls need slower walking than the surrounding bazaar. Go near opening for the best chance of moving comfortably through narrow paths. Keep luggage at your hotel: the operator says the garden has no luggage storage and warns of steps, stone bridges and slippery surfaces after rain.

Yu Garden began as a private Ming-dynasty garden. Its interest is in the succession of rockeries, ponds, bridges and halls: stay with one view for a moment, then notice how the next turn changes it. The garden is small enough to study details instead of treating it like an open urban park. The bazaar and City God Temple around it are different places with their own purposes; walking through the shopping lanes does not mean you have visited the garden. Continue in the old city without another garden ticket: after the signed garden exit, use the South Gate's Nine-Turn Bridge landmark to orient yourself, then choose a short walk through Yuyuan Garden Malls toward the City God Temple precinct. These are adjacent but distinct places: an interior temple visit, food order or seasonal event needs its own current terms. If the bridge area is too crowded or the garden paths are slippery, stay on the wider public lanes and end at Yuyuan Garden / 豫园 station on Lines 10/14 rather than forcing another stop. 7. Xintiandi · 新天地

Xintiandi adapts shikumen-style lanes for restaurants, shops and an evening stroll. It is a useful meal block after the old city, not a reason to cross town solely for a photograph. Choose a restaurant from its actual menu and opening hours; the public street network itself needs no ticket.

8. Tianzifang · 田子坊

Tianzifang is a dense set of former residential lanes filled with studios and small shops. It is easy to browse after #7, but narrow passages can feel crowded; plan it as a short, optional detour rather than a compulsory highlight. Residents still live inside the block, so keep photography and noise out of their doorways.

  • How to visit: Enter at Lane 210, browse the public studio lanes, choose a small shop or café, then return to Taikang Road and Dapuqiao station. Side doors lead to homes, so stay on public lanes.

Former French Concession and Jing'an

We recommend #5 Wukang and Anfu Roads for architecture in daylight, then #9 for a temple or evening meal. Add #12 only when a second temple interests you more than another neighbourhood walk.

5. Former French Concession: Wukang Road and Anfu Road · 衡复风貌区（武康路·安福路）

This walk is about lived-in streets and surviving facades, not an admission-based attraction. Morning light and quieter pavements make the buildings easier to see. The Wukang Building and many other facades are residential or working premises; admire them from public pavement without blocking entrances.

Give the buildings different kinds of attention. Wukang Building is an exterior stop; the visitor centre uses models, pictures and displays to explain the area's older houses. At Ferguson Lane / Wukang Court, a former garden residence has become a place for cafés, restaurants and galleries. Farther along, the streets around Anfu Road connect the architectural walk with shops and the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre. Keep this a public-street walk unless you have checked a particular interior. There is no need to book a collection of buildings to enjoy the neighbourhood; leave room to sit down, look back along the street, or stop at a café whose menu suits you.

Walk: Start at Lines 10/11 Jiaotong University → Wukang Building → Wukang Road Visitor Centre → Ferguson Lane / Wukangting → Romeo Balcony exterior → Ba Jin's Former Residence exterior → Wukang–Anfu junction → Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre → end at Lines 1/7 Changshu Road; roughly 1.5–2 km and 45–60 minutes moving time, excluding stops. 9. Jing'an Temple and West Nanjing Road · 静安寺·南京西路

The gold-roofed temple stands directly beside a busy retail and office district, which makes a short temple visit easy to combine with lunch or the #5 walk. Worship takes precedence over photography; follow the signs for active halls.

  • Hours: Check the temple's official WeChat entry or entrance notice on the visit day for public-hall hours; West Nanjing Road streets are accessible independently.
  • Tickets: Check the temple's current admission notice before entering; the adjacent public street walk is free. Older price and reservation notices are not reliable current terms.
  • Time: 1–2 h for temple and adjacent street.

  • How to visit: Walk from the station to the temple forecourt and south-facing entrance, see public halls when open, then follow West Nanjing Road back to the station or onward to the #5 street walk. Check the posted worship and admission notice; worship takes precedence over photographs.

12. Jade Buddha Temple · 玉佛寺

Choose this working Buddhist temple when religious life and quiet halls matter more than another skyline stop. Its setting is less integrated with the first-visit waterfront walk, so allow a dedicated detour. Respect prayer areas and follow any photography restrictions posted at the site.

  • Tickets: Ordinary entry is free without advance booking. Special-event terms can differ: the 2026 Spring Festival notice kept entry free but required online reservations for New Year's Eve, lunar New Year's Day and the fourth-day evening sessions.

  • Getting there: Line 13 to Jiangning Road / 江宁路, Exit 3; follow Jiangning Road toward the Anyuan Road visitor entrance, about five minutes on foot. Temple transport notice
  • How to visit: Enter from Anyuan Road, see the main hall and other open halls, then the jade-buddha viewing area if open; follow the signed exit. Leave prayer space to worshippers and follow staff directions during ceremonies.

Xuhui riverside

We recommend the West Bund for a deliberately chosen exhibition, with Xujiahui as a separate architecture stop if your day remains open. The river walk itself does not require a museum ticket.

13. West Bund art museums · 西岸艺术区（龙美术馆·西岸美术馆）

The former industrial riverbank now links a public promenade with two major art venues. Choose the exhibition that you actually want to see before traveling south; neither museum's programme is interchangeable with the other. The open riverfront remains useful even when both galleries are between shows.

14. Xujiahui · 徐家汇（天主教堂）

Xujiahui puts a Gothic church exterior amid busy shopping streets and a historic district. Use the church and square as the stable reason to come. It fits best when you are already in Xuhui or moving on from the West Bund.

  • How to visit: Start with the square and facade, enter during the posted visitor window if permitted, then walk Puxi Road back to the station. If worship or a closure blocks the interior, keep the exterior-and-street loop.

Water towns, family museums and Disney

We recommend #11 Zhujiajiao for a Shanghai-based water-town half-day, #15 for a focused indoor family visit, and #16 only with its own full day. These are alternatives for different travellers, so pick one for your day.

11. Zhujiajiao water town · 朱家角古镇

Zhujiajiao gives you canal lanes without crossing into another province. Its public streets are free; ticketed gardens and boat rides are optional. Arrive early on a weekday for a quieter walk around the bridges, then decide whether a paid boat adds anything after you have seen the water from shore.

  • Getting there: Line 17 to Zhujiajiao, then follow the signed connection to the old-town visitor centre. Budget the station-to-town leg rather than treating the station as the entrance. Shanghai metro sightseeing guide
  • How to visit: Line 17 Zhujiajiao → visitor centre → Kezhi Garden area → North Street → Fangsheng Bridge → canal-side lanes → visitor centre for the station return. The operator's 3.5-hour route adds ticketed sights and an optional boat; the public lanes give you a free shorter loop.

Return to Shanghai: before taking Line 17 out, check the actual last departure from Zhujiajiao and your connecting Metro line. Set your turn-back point at Fangsheng Bridge or the visitor centre so the walk to the station fits those trains; if the final connection is not available, keep this as a shorter daytime visit or arrange a licensed taxi to the saved hotel entrance.

Boat and crowds: Two boat routes run: a short one-way ride and a longer loop (operator). A return to the starting pier is charged separately. A weekday morning keeps the main bridges less crowded than a weekend afternoon.

15. Shanghai Natural History Museum · 上海自然博物馆

This is the family-first indoor museum when natural science interests you more than #4's art and archaeology. Its ten permanent zones cover evolution, environments and local natural history.

16. Shanghai Disney Resort · 上海迪士尼度假区

Disney is a full-day theme-park choice, not an add-on after the Bund or a museum. Buy for a date you can protect and read the park calendar before deciding which rides and shows matter to your group. Plan the dated admission, named rides and return to your hotel → Shanghai's Zootopia land is billed by the operator as the world's first land themed to that film, a specific reason to choose this resort if you have visited Disney parks elsewhere.

  • Hours: Park opening and closing change by date; use the official operating calendar for your ticket day.
  • Tickets: Select the date and park-admission product in the resort’s Park Tickets booking catalogue, then use the displayed total and product terms for your group. If the catalogue does not load, open Park Tickets from the official home page. Book with the original identity document carried to the gate; children's and seniors' categories depend on the selected product and eligibility.
  • Time: Full day, excluding the city-to-park transfer.

  • How to visit: Disney Resort station → park guest entrance → Tomorrowland's TRON or another priority ride → Zootopia and Hot Pursuit → chosen show → park exit. Buy the dated ticket with the gate document; use the resort app to reorder rides around live queues.

Return to the city: check the Line 11 last train from Disney Resort and the final connecting line to your hotel, not just the park closing time. If the chosen show ends after the usable rail connection, use the signed taxi pickup to the saved Chinese hotel address; confirm the pickup point in the resort app before the show.

Express and heights: Disney Premier Access is a separately priced shortcut, not ordinary admission. The resort's attraction list gives a 122 cm minimum for TRON Lightcycle Power Run and 81 cm for Zootopia: Hot Pursuit; check every ride your family wants before purchase.

Day trips from Shanghai

We recommend Suzhou for a first day trip: high-speed trains from Shanghai take about 25–40 minutes depending on the service and the Suzhou station, so the day goes to one or two gardens rather than transfers. Shanghai rail guide · Suzhou transport guide.

  • Suzhou · 苏州 — leave from Shanghai or Shanghai Hongqiao, whichever is printed on your 12306 ticket, and book a return from the same Suzhou station you can reach after sightseeing. Choose the Humble Administrator's Garden; the city's 2026 rail guide places the Line 6 Humble Administrator's Garden–Suzhou Museum stop beside it. Add the Lingering Garden only if its entry and the local return to your booked station still fit. Before leaving Shanghai, set the latest garden departure that reaches that station before the train check-in cutoff; without a return seat or local connection, keep the day in Shanghai.   • Hangzhou · 杭州 — Shanghai Hongqiao → Hangzhou East takes about 45–60 minutes by high-speed train in the cited examples (12306 · city guide), then add the Hangzhou East → West Lake city transfer. For a Shanghai-based day, book Hangzhou East → Shanghai Hongqiao before departing and set a lake-to-station turn-back time that meets the actual check-in cutoff; if you want the lake by day and evening, stay overnight and take a next-day return. Spring and autumn suit the walk.
  • Zhouzhuang, Tongli or Xitang · 周庄／同里／西塘 — choose one farther Jiangnan town only if it offers more than #11 Zhujiajiao. For Tongli, take a booked Shanghai Hongqiao → suitable Suzhou station train (about 40 minutes in the city planning guide), transfer to Suzhou Metro Line 4's Tongli station, then confirm the town shuttle in both directions. Book the Suzhou→Shanghai train and set a town departure that clears the shuttle, Metro and rail check-in before treating Tongli as a day trip. Zhouzhuang and Xitang need separately confirmed road legs and a return to the exact Shanghai terminal; if the last leg is uncertain, choose Zhujiajiao or stay overnight.   • Wuzhen · 乌镇 — save this canal town for an overnight if you want the after-dark view. Confirm the actual Shanghai departure terminal and next-day return coach before paying for the room: the January 2026 transport list names Hongqiao West, but the August 2026 city report calls that long-distance station former. At Wuzhen Bus Station, confirm the K350 local connection into your chosen East or West Scenic Zone and back to the coach. Without the confirmed terminal, local link and next-day return, choose Zhujiajiao instead. Spring or autumn eases the outdoor walk.

Beyond the main sights

Eat. For xiaolongbao, try Wu You Xian · 吾有鲜 on South Maoming Road in the former French Concession; open a dumpling carefully because the broth is hot. For shengjian, Da Hu Chun · 大壶春 on Middle Sichuan Road is near the Bund side of the centre. For benbang dishes, Shanghai Classical Restaurant · 上海老饭店 stands by Yu Garden, while Huxi Laolongtang Noodle Shop · 沪西老弄堂面馆 on Dingxi Road serves scallion-oil noodles. Shop. Use Nanjing Road East for established food shops and department-store gifts. Browse Huaihai Middle Road for fashion and larger retail. Choose Tianzifang for small design and craft shops when you want to browse rather than make a compulsory souvenir stop. Evenings. Keep one evening for #1 the Bund or #10 a river cruise. For a fixed show, ERA2 — Spirit of Shanghai at Shanghai Circus World is a named acrobat option; buy only for a confirmed performance date. For jazz, check the Old Jazz Band at the Fairmont Peace Hotel; for a higher-priced skyline drink, Terrace 9:15 at that hotel is a named Bund rooftop. Seasons. Shanghai's climate guide makes spring a good walking season, although light rain is common. Mid-June to early July is the plum-rain period: hold #4 or #15 as indoor options. Late August to mid-September is the usual peak typhoon window, when outdoor decks, ferries and river boats can be disrupted. Autumn brings comfortable Bund and Wukang walks; winter is damp and cold enough to shorten long riverside sessions. National Day and Spring Festival bring heavy travel demand and changed venue hours, so secure trains and timed tickets before fixing day trips.

Budget for the experiences you choose

A Shanghai day need not start with a paid skyline ticket. The Bund, Wukang–Anfu streets and Lujiazui public riverfront are free; Shanghai Museum East's ordinary permanent collection is also free under its published individual-visit rules. Yu Garden adds CNY 40 in April–June and September–November, or CNY 30 in the other months. Those are admission choices, not a complete daily budget.

An observation deck and a sightseeing cruise are separate purchases. Shanghai Tower's cited standard adult deck price is CNY 180, while the cruise price varies by season and public holidays; the river-view comparison helps you decide whether one adds enough to the free promenade. Keep hotel, metro or taxi, meals and out-of-town rail in separate lines. Disney, a special exhibition or a paid show can change the total much more than adding another neighbourhood walk. Before you go

Carry the original passport used for real-name tickets and hotel check-in, and save your hotel's Chinese name and address offline.
