Print or hand-copy the same pack and keep it separate from the phone; a companion may also save it independently. A phone-only card cannot recover a dead battery.

Run this seven-step test before departure

Install AMap Global from the official store. Keep Apple Maps on iPhone.
Use the exact phone, store region, system language and account state you will travel with.
Test a hotel, one railway station and one ordinary restaurant.
For each place, search English name → Chinese official name → full Chinese address.
Plan one walking route and one public-transport route; verify the destination entrance.
Save each place. If folders or notes are unavailable, copy all six card fields to an independent offline note.
Turn on flight mode; record whether the destination opens, search works and walking or transit can be recalculated.

Keep Google Maps and Baidu inside honest boundaries

Google Maps

It may remain useful for pre-trip lists or comparison. The reviewed Google source concerns Maps Platform, not a complete consumer-app tourist workflow. A developer API policy does not establish consumer-app success or failure. The editorial recommendation to keep another path is based on the untested sole-navigation dependency; no universal Google failure is claimed.

Baidu Maps

Current store material shows broad map and route capability but does not establish a comparable end-to-end English tourist workflow. Treat it as a Chinese-capable fallback when the traveller or companion can operate the actual interface.

Six worked scenarios

These are bounded editorial applications of current platform evidence, not invented device-test results.

DEFAULT

Case 1 — iPhone default

Conditions: If Apple Maps resolves your three places and entrances.
Result: Use it first, keep AMap Global installed, save places using the features actually available and keep the address card outside both apps.

DEFAULT

Case 2 — Android default

Conditions: If AMap Global resolves your three places and entrances.
Result: Use it first, but keep the same six destination fields in an independent offline note. The account is not the backup.

FAILURE

Case 3 — login blocks the plan

Conditions: The foreign-number OTP does not arrive.
Result: Retry once, preserve no-login functions, move saving outside the account and stop if rate limiting or account lock appears.

REVERSAL

Case 4 — English search fails

Conditions: The English name finds nothing or the wrong branch.
Result: Use Chinese official name, full Chinese address and then an optional sourced coordinate. Ask the destination when they disagree.

FAILURE

Case 5 — the offline assumption fails

Conditions: Saved tiles display but the route cannot be recalculated.
Result: Use the screenshot and address card, show the Chinese destination at a service point and preserve battery for calls and payment.

EDGE

Case 6 — two maps disagree

Conditions: Apps point to different sides of a station or attraction.
Result: Match Chinese full name, district, phone and named entrance against the official message before moving.

Three look-alike destinations that require a stop

Same hotel, different district: match the Chinese name and full branch address to the booking message; ask the actual hotel before calling a car.
Similar station names: Shanghai station and Shanghai Hongqiao are different destinations. Match the exact Chinese station on the issued ticket and its entrance.
Correct attraction, wrong gate: confirm the pedestrian entrance separately from the vehicle drop-off. A centre pin or closed gate does not establish access.

These are synthetic error checks, not field visits. If identity or entrance remains unresolved, stay at a staffed location and contact the destination using the card.

Seven recovery cards

Login or OTP fails

First action: Retry once after checking country code, SMS roaming and the exact error.
Alternative: Use no-login search or routing and move saved details to the independent card.
Stop / escalate: Stop after a rate limit, account lock or request for unnecessary sensitive data.

English search finds nothing

First action: Paste the official Chinese name.
Alternative: Use the full Chinese address, then compare an optional sourced coordinate.
Stop / escalate: Ask the destination to send its official location when the inputs disagree.

Folders or notes are missing

First action: Screenshot the place card and copy the six destination fields.
Alternative: Use Apple Guides/Notes on iPhone or an independent offline note on Android.
Stop / escalate: Do not treat a visible star as proof the details open offline.

Walking or transit route disappears

First action: Verify the endpoint and switch to the installed second map.
Alternative: Use an official taxi queue or ask the hotel to arrange transport.
Stop / escalate: Stop following a route that crosses a closed, unsafe or access-controlled area.

No data, phone still has power

First action: Open the saved screenshot and Chinese address card.
Alternative: Show the saved text at a service desk or official taxi queue; ask staff to contact the hotel if needed.
Stop / escalate: Stop refreshing while walking; preserve battery for calls and payment.

Two maps disagree

First action: Match Chinese full name, district, phone and entrance.
Alternative: Use the destination's official page or hotel message to confirm.
Stop / escalate: Do not walk or call a car until the identity and entrance are closed.

The phone has no battery

First action: Use the paper Chinese address card or a companion’s saved copy.
Alternative: Stay at a staffed location; ask for charging and help contacting the destination using that card.
Stop / escalate: Do not rely on a screenshot stored only on the dead phone or follow an unknown pin.

What to check on your phone

English menus, foreign-number login, saved places and offline routing can differ by app version and device. Test those functions on the phone and app version you will carry. Run the seven-step departure check above on your own phone and destinations. If a critical task fails, keep the Chinese address card outside the map account and ask staffed help to confirm the destination and entrance before moving.

What if I have no data or my battery is dead?

With power, show the previously saved Chinese address card or screenshot; it does not prove offline routing. With no battery, use a paper card or companion’s saved copy and ask staffed help to contact the destination. Keep that independent copy before departure.

What map app should an iPhone visitor use in China?

Start with Apple Maps and install AMap Global as backup. Apple documents that Maps in China uses AMap mapping services and does not require Apple Account sign-in, but the exact places and routes still need a same-device test.

What map app should an Android visitor use in China?

Start with AMap Global, then keep the Chinese name, full Chinese address, phone and separate vehicle/pedestrian entrances; add a coordinate only when its source is known for each critical destination in an independent offline note.

Does Google Maps never work in mainland China?

This page does not make that universal claim; a Maps Platform developer policy is not consumer-app evidence. Keep it as a planning reference if useful, but do not make it the only tool that must identify a mainland destination or route.

Can I rely on Apple Maps or AMap offline in China?

Not without testing the exact city area and task on the exact phone. Check download availability, then separately test offline display, place search, walking recalculation and transit recalculation.

15-second answer: On iPhone, try Apple Maps first with AMap Global as a candidate backup; on Android, try AMap Global. Keep Chinese address cards outside both accounts and a paper or second-device copy for a dead phone. These are device-conditional candidates, not tested winners. Google Maps can remain a planning reference, but should not be the sole live navigation source in mainland China.

Card to fill from the destination’s official message: For every hotel and critical destination, save official Chinese name, full address, phone, vehicle entrance, pedestrian entrance and an optional sourced coordinate. Test search, current location, walking route and transit route on the exact phone before the first solo transfer.

AMap location is inaccurate and Dianping is hard to use

Context: a recent traveller struggled both to navigate in AMap and to find restaurants in Dianping.
15-second answer: Separate the two jobs. Fix map positioning with permissions and a known landmark; find food through hotel staff, the map's nearby search, or a translated cuisine/diet request rather than forcing Dianping.
Do now: Enable precise location and compass calibration, compare the blue dot with the building/exit number, and navigate to a named entrance. For food, ask the hotel for three nearby places and save their Chinese pins.
If it fails: Stop following a moving dot; show the address card to staff or a driver and walk from a verified landmark. Use the restaurant phone/address, not an English review-platform name.
Boundary/reversal: Position error may be device sensor, permission, indoor signal, or wrong entrance. Root cause is unconfirmed without screen capture and device/OS; the landmark method remains valid.

AMap suddenly asks for a Chinese number overseas

Context: AMap initially worked during pre-trip planning, then prompted for a Chinese mobile number.
15-second answer: Do not buy a local number solely because one optional flow requests it. Try the latest international/multilingual AMap path without login; preserve saved addresses outside the account.
Do now: Screenshot the exact prompt and action that triggered it; update from the official app store; try search/navigation without signing in; export critical pins to address cards.
If it fails: Use the multilingual web/app path or another China-capable map for planning and complete AMap setup after arrival. A local SIM becomes justified when even one indispensable actual service requires a mainland number and no permitted alternative meets that task.
Boundary/reversal: The current Shanghai government publication describes multilingual pre-arrival planning and saving destinations, but does not promise every account flow works without +86. This still needs a check on the exact app version.

AMap works poorly outside China

Context: a recent visitor found AMap much worse before entering China than while in China.
15-second answer: Use it overseas to save Chinese destinations, not to certify live routing quality. Recalculate transport after arrival on local data.
Do now: Prepare destination cards and rough routes before flight; after arrival, test current location and recalculate the next leg before leaving a staffed area.
If it fails: Ask the airport/hotel desk to validate the pin and route, then retain a taxi/public-transit fallback.
Boundary/reversal: A pre-arrival route can be stale because of gates, road controls or timetable changes. Recheck on the travel day.

A US family normally depends on Google Maps

Context: a Michigan family planning a September trip wants to navigate as it does elsewhere with Google Maps.
15-second answer: Do not promise the same reliability. Keep Google for saved research if desired, but use the device-conditional Apple Maps/AMap choice plus Chinese address cards before arrival.
Do now: Have two adults hold the itinerary, install/test the China map, save hotel return cards, and agree on a meeting point if phones diverge.
If it fails: One adult asks staff while the other stays with the family/luggage; use the Chinese card for a staffed taxi rather than walking toward an unverified pin.
Boundary/reversal: Exact Google reachability and coordinate quality depends on connection and place; no current first-party source supports a universal live-navigation guarantee. Actual device behaviour remains untested.

Resolve three look-alike destinations before moving

Same hotel name, different district: the English brand is insufficient. Match official Chinese name and full branch address with the booking message; ask the actual hotel to confirm before calling a car.
Similar railway names: Shanghai station and Shanghai Hongqiao are not interchangeable. Match the exact Chinese departure station on the issued ticket and its entrance; stop if the map and ticket disagree.
Correct attraction, wrong gate: separate vehicle drop-off from pedestrian entry and compare the named permitted gate with the destination’s current message. Do not follow a pin across a closed or access-controlled area.

With power but no data, open the previously saved Chinese name/address/contact/entrance text or screenshot; it is not proof of offline route recalculation. With no battery, use the paper card or a companion’s saved copy and ask staffed help to contact the destination. A card saved only on the dead phone cannot help.
