Hangzhou travel guide: West Lake, Lingyin and the old city
Hangzhou joins an open lakeside landscape to a reserved temple hill, Southern Song streets and a northern canal quarter. For a first visit, stay near Hubin and choose the lake plus Lingyin; a paid boat, tea museum or canal block costs another slice of time.
Allow two full sightseeing days and three hotel nights; with one full day, choose the lake or a reserved Lingyin visit.

The order serves a mixed first visit. A lake-and-temple stay uses #1–2; #3 gives the old-city evening, while #4–9 are choices rather than a nine-stop target.
Relationship aid, not a scale map; use the Chinese entrance in each Address line for the final approach.
How long, and what goes together
Default: two full sightseeing days and three hotel nights in one Hubin / 龙翔桥 hotel. Arrival and departure remain transfer blocks. Give the open north-shore lake walk one full block; reserve Lingyin for another. The tea museum fits after Lingyin only when both the road leg and its 16:30 close leave room. A third full block opens the canal or the south-lake museums.
#1 → #3: allow about 5–6 editorial hours for the complete north-shore walk, hotel pause and separate old-city meal; return from 白堤 before moving south.
#2 → #4: allow 5–7 hours including west-hill transfers; a confirmed Lingyin slot and the Tea Museum's Tuesday closure decide whether both fit.
#7 → #3: allow 2–3 hours in the old city; use the museum within its reported 09:00–16:30 window, then walk to 河坊街 afterward.
#6 → #8: allow 3–4 hours plus the south-lake road leg; the Silk Museum's 16:30 last entry comes before the tower's summer evening close.
One full day: keep #1 and a short #3 street block, or use a confirmed #2 temple slot and skip the full lake walk. Two hotel nights: the actual arrival and exit hours decide whether one full day survives. Four hotel nights: add #9 or a separately researched day trip, keeping the Hubin bed and a real return.
Book ahead for the decisions that can fail
Lingyin: reserve through 杭州灵隐飞来峰 in WeChat or Alipay with the passport number and original passport. The operator opens a seven-day window and requires booking at least a day ahead. A full slot uses the online waitlist up to the prior evening.
External door and hotel: save the issued flight terminal or the 12306 Chinese station, then buy a room whose Chinese address and same-hotel return fit that door.
Only the paid addition you choose: for #5 establish boarding pier, island entry, mainland return and last boat at the issuer; for #6 use the tower's own ticket point. Public West Lake paths need neither purchase.
Museum day: put #4 and #7 away from their Tuesday closures, and #8 before its 16:30 last entry. Carry the passport for #8's documented entrance procedure.
Where to stay in Hangzhou
Default: 湖滨 / 龙翔桥, on West Lake's east side. It puts #1 near the hotel and Metro Line 1 between the airport, both main rail stations and a repeatable return. The trade-off is a busy shopping waterfront and variable room prices.
Grand Hyatt Hangzhou · 杭州君悦酒店, 湖滨路28号:Hyatt lists its east-shore door. This is the lake-first example; compare an actual room category and final price before purchase.
EVEN Hotel Hangzhou West Lake · 杭州西湖逸衡酒店, 东方金座B座:IHG lists 龙翔桥 as the nearby metro and says it has no airport shuttle. Use it as a metro-side alternative, with the station-exit-to-building walk saved on your map.
An East Station hotel saves an early station leg but adds travel to both sightseeing areas. Keep one base unless an issued departure makes that trade worthwhile.
Getting to Hangzhou
HGH 杭州萧山国际机场, 杭州东站 and 杭州站（城站） are three different doors.The airport lists Metro Lines 1, 7 and 19; Line 1 connects the airport, East Station, central Hangzhou Station corridor and 龙翔桥. Below are editorial door-to-hotel allowances with orientation and luggage, not train timetables or quoted fares.
HGH → 湖滨 hotel: follow terminal signs to the metro/ground-transport centre; take operating Line 1 toward 龙翔桥, then walk to the saved hotel door. Allow 70–100 minutes terminal-to-door. After metro service, use the signed taxi or ride-hail pickup and its live quote. Reverse the route with flight security time.
杭州东站 → 湖滨 hotel: use its Line 1 entrance to 龙翔桥, then the mapped hotel walk. Allow 40–60 minutes station exit-to-door. Return to 杭州东站 only when the issued rail ticket prints 杭州东.
杭州站（城站） → 湖滨 hotel: enter Line 1 at 城站 for 龙翔桥 and finish on foot. Allow 25–45 minutes exit-to-door. A 杭州站 ticket is a different station from 杭州东站.
Read the airport or metro's operating hours and gate fare for the travel date. Line 19 serves a different airport/East Station corridor and may add a transfer to this Hubin base.
Getting around Hangzhou
Walk #1 from the hotel and retrace it rather than drawing a deceptively short circle around the whole lake. For #2, the scenic authority names 黄龙体育中心 and a weekend 龙翔桥 connector among its controlled access options; use the service running on the visit date and save its return stop. Reach #4 by a separate road/bus leg to 龙井路88号. Reach #3 and #7 through 吴山广场, #6 and #8 on the south-lake roads, and #9 as a north-canal outing. Save the Chinese Address line and the hotel door for each transfer.

Use the list number for the matching entrance, ticket decision and way back. Walking and visit durations below are editorial allowances; opening and reservation rules link to the named authority or operator.
1. West Lake public shore · 西湖湖滨—断桥—白堤
The lake is Hangzhou's defining cultural landscape. The east-to-north shore gives a first visitor its city, water and hill views without a boat purchase.
Hours
The public shore is an open-air walk; follow a dated scenic closure during severe weather. The 2026 public-park account distinguishes open paths from paid sights.
Tickets
Free for the public shore. Island boats and tower interiors are separate choices.
Free with a named, timed 杭州灵隐飞来峰 reservation made at least a day ahead within the seven-day window. The operator explicitly accepts a foreign passport. Since February 2026, a full slot uses online waitlist rather than onsite registration; carry the original booked passport.
Use the operating metro-to-scenic shuttle from 黄龙体育中心, or the weekend 龙翔桥 connector when listed by the scenic traffic authority. Continue from the signed stop to the reservation entrance; return from the signed pickup.
How to visit
预约核验 → 飞来峰造像 → 灵隐寺殿宇 → signed exit. Keep the museum as an optional later stop only while its 16:30 closing still fits.
This is Hangzhou's old-city counterpoint to the lake: Hefang Street and Southern Song Imperial Street give a meal and street-life block without another scenic transfer.
Hours
Public streets can be walked independently of individual shop hours; city tourism lists the quarter as an evening route.
Tickets
The street walk has no district gate ticket. Paid interiors, performances and purchases are individual decisions.
From the Hubin base, use a mapped road or metro connection to 吴山广场, then enter 河坊街 on foot. Return to the same hotel from the chosen exit.

4. China National Tea Museum, Shuangfeng · 中国茶叶博物馆双峰馆区
Shuangfeng is the compact tea choice after Lingyin; its exhibitions explain local tea before a visitor commits to a village tasting or purchase.
Take a current scenic-area road or bus leg to 龙井路88号, then follow the 双峰馆区 sign. The 龙井馆区 at 翁家山268号 is a separate campus.
How to visit
双峰入口 → 中华茶文化展 → 西湖龙井茶专题展 → same exit. Return by a mapped road leg to the Hubin hotel; a late Lingyin exit makes this a separate visit.

5. Three Pools island boat · 三潭印月上岛游船
The island gives a water-level view of the lake. It adds a paid departure and mainland landing to the open-shore route.
Hours
Use the island-service departure posted at the chosen pier. A 2025 boat report hosted by Hangzhou CPPCC records weather suspensions and distinct products; its holiday timetable has expired.
Tickets
Choose the 三潭印月上岛 product, which the dated 2025 boat report describes as including the island and return. The city tourism wharf listing gives 湖滨二公园码头's operator phone +86 571 87063514; its printed fares are from 2013. Call the issuer or use its current signed pier board for today's boat type, fare and last return before paying.
The interior is a separate paid attraction. The city scenic listing gives the visitor phone +86 571 87979206; confirm today's fare and foreign-document entry there or at the 南山路15号 ticket point before buying. An exterior public-shore view needs no tower ticket.
Take a mapped south-lake road leg to 玉皇山路73-1号 and finish at the museum entrance. Return to Hubin by the same area connection.
How to visit
Main entrance → current silk and fashion exhibitions → same entrance. Pair with the south-shore tower only with enough time before the museum's 16:30 last entry.
9. Qiaoxi historic street and Gongchen Bridge · 桥西直街—拱宸桥
The northern canal quarter shows another Hangzhou: old factories, craft shops and a bridge over the Grand Canal. Give it its own city block.
Use a mapped metro or road trip from Hubin to 拱宸桥, cross to its west side and enter 桥西直街 on foot. Use the same named bridge as the return anchor.
How to visit
拱宸桥 → 桥西直街 factory-era lanes and craft fronts → bridge return. A canal boat adds its own pier, ticket and landing decision.
Day trips from Hangzhou
Shaoxing · 绍兴: choose this for 鲁迅故里 and the old city after the two Hangzhou sightseeing blocks. From the Hubin hotel, take Hangzhou Line 1 to 城站, change to Line 5 for 姑娘桥, then use the Shaoxing rail operator's live network map and timetable for Line 1 to 鲁迅故里站; the site operator gives 鲁迅中路235号 as the destination. The site's 2026 holiday notice confirms timed reservations can apply, so obtain the admission slot before fixing the trip. Reverse the same metro route to 龙翔桥 and the Hubin bed while trains still run; wet or very hot weather favors an indoor city choice instead.
Wuzhen · 乌镇: choose the water-town streets only when there is time for its separate rail and road legs. The scenic operator describes 杭州东站 / 杭州站 → 桐乡站 → 乌镇汽车站; the current rail ticket, onward bus and return must all fit before calling it a day trip. An overnight Wuzhen stay is the safer branch if that return is unavailable. Shanghai: treat it as the next city unless an issued 12306 station pair leaves a real sightseeing block and the final train reaches the same Hangzhou hotel. The northern canal quarter #9 stays in the Hangzhou list.
Food and seasons
The city tourism portal names 东坡肉 / Dongpo pork and 龙井虾仁 / Longjing tea shrimp as Hangzhou dishes. The 清河坊 meal block works after a lake walk; ask about pork and shellfish where diet matters. Summer heat favors an early public-shore walk, while heavy rain favors #7 or #8 during their open hours. Tea exhibitions are available beyond spring picking season; a tea purchase or paid tasting is a separate choice.
When a key leg fails
No Lingyin slot: use #7 → #3 for an old-city day or #4 on its open day; keep the same Hubin hotel and release the west-hill transfer.
Boat stopped: retain #1's public shore when paths are open, or use #7/#8 indoors during severe weather. The purchased operator's ticket governs changes and refunds.
Museum closed or temple runs late: end #2 at its signed shuttle return and keep #4 for another open block; #3's public street is an evening alternative.
Wrong station entered in the route app: read the Chinese name on the rail ticket and rebuild the hotel-to-platform leg for 杭州东站 or 杭州站 as printed.
Scenic road controlled: use the named scenic connector and its return stop; a taxi pickup inside a restricted road is not an arrival plan.
