Osaka–Shanghai ferry: check service before booking

For a date-fixed trip, plan the crossing by air

Do not buy an Osaka–Shanghai passenger-ferry ticket, or non-refundable travel tied to a sailing, on the published information checked on 13 September 2026. The operator still displays a passenger-interruption notice alongside a later passenger timetable. That is unresolved evidence, not a dependable resumption date. For a trip that must happen on particular dates, switch the crossing to a flight you can actually confirm.

Check passenger notices before considering a sailing

Read the operator’s dated passenger notices together with the booking and schedule pages. Until they resolve the interruption for your intended sailing and provide an actual passenger offer, keep a flight or postpone the crossing.

Use the timetable to identify a possible sailing only after the passenger-service interruption has been resolved; then check whether it accepts passengers for your date.

What it establishes: A desktop registration and reservation route is described, with sales normally starting two months before departure.

Treat the trip as booked only after the operator or your original seller has issued a passenger confirmation for your date.

A terminal construction estimate, cargo sailing, vessel movement or old fare table cannot resolve the passenger-service interruption. Use a dated passenger-service statement for the sailing you intend to take.

What to do with the trip now

1. For fixed dates, choose a flight with confirmed availability and baggage, change and cancellation terms you accept. Arrange the Shanghai hotel and onward transport around that confirmed arrival.
2. Do not pay a ferry deposit or a reseller’s “reopening” surcharge to find out whether the service exists. Do not commit to either passenger terminal using only the timetable.
3. If the sea crossing itself is essential and dates are flexible, leave it unbooked and postpone that part of the trip. Keep accommodation and ground arrangements changeable under their actual terms.
4. Keep an already usable travel plan until the ferry evidence below is in place. Do not cancel a confirmed flight merely because a new sailing date appears online.

What would make the ferry worth booking again?

Reconsider the ferry when dated passenger information resolves the interruption for your sailing, the official route accepts passenger reservations at a stated fare, and terminal/check-in instructions are clear. Keep dependent travel changeable until you hold the issued confirmation.

• Passenger service is explicit: a later restart announcement or dated operator confirmation resolves the interruption for the named sailing. A cargo update or the bare timetable is insufficient.
• A real passenger offer is available for your date, including the fare and cancellation conditions. A generic reservation page or an unanswered request is insufficient.
• Departure port, passenger terminal, check-in deadline and arrival terminal are supplied for that sailing. The published route alternates Osaka and Kobe; do not assume every Japan departure uses Osaka.
• Once you choose to book after those conditions are met, retain the issued confirmation before changing dependent travel. No trial purchase is needed to justify declining the ferry now.

If you already hold a ferry reservation

Check the notice and terms that apply to your own sailing before cancelling. The December 2025 interruption notice says the affected existing reservations could be cancelled without a fee; the generic booking page warns that ordinary cancellations can incur charges. Do not extend that special waiver to every future ticket. Keep your order and the relevant cancellation notice, request the applicable refund through the original seller, and do not assume that hotels or flights are covered.
