East Coast & Lower Yangtze: choose cities, mountain or coast
For a first seven-night city, garden and lake trip, start with Shanghai (3) → Suzhou (2) → Hangzhou (2). This gives each city a stay but leaves Huangshan and Fujian for another journey. Choose the Huangshan branch when mountain scenery earns a weather-flex base; choose Xiamen → Quanzhou instead when island architecture and port history are the point.
These night counts assume a daytime arrival and a booked onward ticket. A late arrival, early departure or slow transfer removes sightseeing time; add a night or drop a stop. Use dated train, ferry and park bookings before locking each overnight base.

Each version gives every overnight base a reason. Pick one; the inland and coast branches are alternatives to adding more stops to the city route.

When to cut it: If the schedule has no spare day for poor mountain visibility, choose the city route now or replace Hangzhou with Huangshan rather than promising both landscapes.
Xiamen 3 nightsUse a city base and decide whether a Gulangyu ferry day fits the actual sailing and weather.
Quanzhou 2 nightsGive its maritime-history sites and city streets a separate visit.
Move between bases: Enter through Xiamen if that is your booked flight or rail gateway. Search the exact Xiamen → Quanzhou station pair; arrange the Gulangyu ferry by the operator's current outbound route. Keep a mainland city day available if wind or a cancellation stops the island visit.
When to cut it: For a shorter stay, choose Xiamen or Quanzhou as the single base. Add an inland Fujian stop only after fixing its actual village or mountain access and an extra overnight.

Choose an island-and-port-history journey rather than extending a Shanghai weekend indefinitely.

When the plan changes
Arrival and departure
For the Shanghai-led routes, name the arrival airport, first hotel and first intercity station separately. Choose the actual Shanghai airport-to-city leg → If your return flight leaves Shanghai early, move the final night to Shanghai or book a different exit city; same-day travel from Hangzhou or Huangshan adds a fragile transfer. Mountain access
Huangshan North rail station, Huangshan City and the scenic-area entrance are different points. The scenic-area transport page maps the South Gate transfer network, but the boarding stop for a particular shuttle comes from its ticket. Choose the mountain entrance, ticketed stop and hotel base before treating a rail arrival as a park day.
Summer and coastal weather
Shanghai’s municipal weather guide identifies summer rain and late-summer typhoon exposure. A city day can move indoors; a Huangshan view day or Gulangyu ferry is less flexible. Read the forecast and operator notice shortly before travel, and keep a city or heritage day to swap in.
Ferry and fixed tickets
Gulangyu needs a dated ferry booking. Use Xiamen Ferry's departure guide to distinguish daytime and evening mainland terminals, and its booking FAQ for passport and return rules. Choose an available outward sailing, then follow the terminal named on that ticket; the piers are not interchangeable. If wind cancels service or the suitable sailing is full, use the Xiamen city day and keep Quanzhou’s separate overnight; move the island visit.
Book in this order: choose the route branch and international entry/exit → search each exact 12306 station pair and transfer day → choose overnight bases → book park admission or a ferry sailing for the actual date → keep the weather alternative available. Current availability may force a different order; hold payment for a nonrefundable branch until its key access is secured.
