Jiangsu: choose Nanjing and Suzhou, Wuxi or Yangzhou
For a first four-night Jiangsu culture contrast, choose Nanjing 南京 (2 nights) → Suzhou 苏州 (2 nights). Keep one Zhongshan history day, then one garden and old-city day, with a booked station-to-hotel leg and reverse for each base. This gives up Wuxi's Taihu waterfront and Yangzhou's canal-and-museum stay. Choose one of those separate bases instead when lake scenery or canal history is the reason to travel.
These are three separate stays; choose one for this trip. The East Coast route uses Suzhou between Shanghai and Hangzhou; a Jiangsu-focused stay gives its cities their own nights. Four nights protect a daytime arrival, hotel move and exit. Reverse Nanjing and Suzhou only after the actual dated rail pair and exit city work.
Choose one Jiangsu branch
Decide between capital history plus gardens, a lake landscape or a canal city before fixing your first and last station. The nights below belong to one choice at a time.
Choose one Zhongshan history day and one deliberate garden and old-city day. Two nights in each city protect a real hotel move and separate departure; stay overnight in both Jiangsu cities.
Hard stop: Zhongshan Mausoleum requires a dated reservation. The operator's bilingual guide lists Monday maintenance closure, with holiday and anniversary exceptions; read the notice for your visit date before fixing this as the history day. Confirm the foreign-passport booking and entry route with the operator; its 2026 on-site kiosk instructions specify Chinese ID cards, so do not rely on that kiosk. Suzhou Museum has its own timed slot. A rail station, museum stop and garden gate each needs its own last leg.
Choose lake scenery as the main reason for Jiangsu. Two Wuxi nights allow an arrival, one weather-aware Yuantouzhu day and a return without attaching a rushed Suzhou garden visit.
Hard stop: A 2026 spring cherry-season shuttle and road plan was seasonal. Read Yuantouzhu's current gate, admission and weather notices, and arrange the transport return. Lake weather can remove the scenic day.
Yangzhou 扬州: Slender West Lake and the Grand Canal Museum
Choose canal culture, the old city and a lake garden over a fast Nanjing–Suzhou pairing. Three Yangzhou nights give the lake and China Grand Canal Museum different days and keep the station return visible.
Hard stop: The museum normally closes Monday. Its July 2026 notice supports foreign-passport reservations through its official WeChat account, with the same original passport at entry; use the current slot and holiday notice before making the museum the fixed day.

Nights that make one choice work
The allocation protects an actual visit and departure. Adding a water town or Zhenjiang needs its own transport and overnight decision.

Nanjing 南京 2 nightsUse a booked Xinjiekou-area hotel as the city base, with a full Zhongshan Scenic Area day and time for the station transfer.
Suzhou 苏州 2 nightsStay in the old-city/garden area after identifying the arrival station on your ticket, then choose one garden and add the museum if a timed slot is available.
Entry, last leg and return: Enter at the Nanjing airport or the exact Nanjing South (南京南) or Nanjing Station (南京站) on your ticket; arrange the ride to the booked hotel. For Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum (中山陵), Metro Line 2 at Muxuyuan (苜蓿园) or Xiamafang (下马坊) still leaves a scenic shuttle or walk to the reserved entry; use the operator's dated shuttle information. Search 12306 for your actual Nanjing-area departure → Suzhou-area arrival and its date. If the ticket says Suzhou Station (苏州站), the city government's 2026 guide gives Line 2 → Pinghe Road (平河路) → Line 6 → Humble Administrator's Garden/Suzhou Museum Station (拙政园苏博站), Exit 1; finish the walk or road ride to your particular hotel and selected garden gate. Suzhou North (苏州北站) is a different arrival and needs a new last-leg plan. Leave from the station and city on your issued exit ticket, with the hotel-to-station reverse arranged; an early Shanghai flight needs a Shanghai last night or an available dated return.
When to cut it: With only two nights, choose Nanjing history or Suzhou gardens as the single base. If the mausoleum reservation fails, use an independently open Nanjing visit; if a Suzhou museum slot fails, keep the garden/old-city day. A same-day cross-city dash leaves out the four-night route's protected visits.
TAIHU SHORE · 2 NIGHTS
Wuxi 无锡: Yuantouzhu 鼋头渚 and Taihu 太湖

Entry, last leg and return: Buy a dated ticket to the exact Wuxi Station (无锡站) or Wuxi East (无锡东站) printed on it; they need different hotel arrival plans. Arrange the station-to-hotel ride and a separate ride to Yuantouzhu's Chongshan Gate (充山大门). The city's 2025 guide documented bus K1 from Wuxi Station to Chongshan Gate and K87 toward Dushan Gate, but use today's operator timetable for either departure. Ask the operator for the current bus route and last return, or prebook a car for the round trip from the hotel. Keep the reverse hotel-to-booked-station ride for the onward train. Line 5 Yuantouzhu metro station is still under construction; use a road arrival.
When to cut it: If the lake day is unsafe or the gate return fails on your date, keep an independently open Wuxi city day and the booked rail exit, or move the Yuantouzhu date. Use an arranged road return if the spring shuttle or dated bus misses the final train; Line 5 is still unfinished.
CANAL + OLD CITY · 3 NIGHTS
Yangzhou 扬州: Slender West Lake and the Grand Canal Museum
Why this branch: Choose canal culture, the old city and a lake garden over a fast Nanjing–Suzhou pairing. Three Yangzhou nights give the lake and China Grand Canal Museum different days and keep the station return visible.
Yangzhou 扬州 3 nightsStay in a booked old-city base; protect separate lake/old-city and museum days, plus the ride to the booked exit station.
Entry, last leg and return: Use the exact Yangzhou East (扬州东站) or Yangzhou Station (扬州站) on the issued 12306 ticket and arrange a road ride to the old-city hotel. Slender West Lake (瘦西湖) has its own Dahongqiao Road visitor side; use the gate on the current operator ticket and return to the hotel. The China Grand Canal Museum (中国大运河博物馆) is a separate trip: its visit page names bus routes 82/57/56/9, but ask for the current bus and return or arrange a car round trip and the booked entry. Return from the hotel to the exact station on the outbound ticket, leaving enough margin for that road leg. The East Hub sightseeing line was announced for spring 2026; ask the operator for current station transfers.
When to cut it: If Monday or a missing museum slot removes that day, swap with an open lake/old-city day or change the dates. If the lake gate or ride closes, keep the museum only with its own booked entry and return. Never sacrifice the hotel-to-station exit to fit a second site.
Gateways and final rides that change the choice
Nanjing terminal to Zhongshan entry
Read the Nanjing arrival terminal on your ticket, then arrange its separate hotel transfer. The Zhongshan operator's 2026 service guide requires mausoleum reservation; its Metro guide sends Line 2 visitors to Muxuyuan or Xiamafang, followed by a scenic-area ride or walk. The 2025 bilingual guide lists passports among scenic-area real-name IDs, but does not establish a passport booking route for the mausoleum. The 2026 guide describes an on-site kiosk for Chinese ID cards. Ask the operator to confirm how a foreign passport holder reserves and enters before making this the fixed history day; if that route is unavailable, use an independently open Nanjing visit. Return to the Nanjing-area station on your outbound ticket.
Suzhou Station is a specific arrival
The city's 2026 guide directs a Suzhou Station arrival by Metro Line 2 via Pinghe Road to Line 6 and the Humble Administrator's Garden/Suzhou Museum Station Exit 1. Use current service and arrange the walk to the chosen hotel and garden entrance. Suzhou North needs a different plan. The summer 2026 museum notice documents summer reservations; use the museum's current timed slot.
Wuxi rail to a lake gate and back
A municipal guide documented Wuxi Station bus K1 to Chongshan Gate and K87 toward Dushan Gate. Ask the operator for the current local service and last return, or arrange a car round trip. The 2026 cherry-season shuttle was seasonal, and a July 2026 authority report describes Line 5 construction. Arrive at Yuantouzhu by road. Wuxi East has a separate hotel ride.
Yangzhou rail, lake and museum
Arrive at the Yangzhou East or Yangzhou Station on your ticket, ride to the actual hotel, then treat Slender West Lake and the China Grand Canal Museum as different visits. The museum visitor page lists normal Monday closure and routes 82/57/56/9. Its July 2026 notice accepts a foreign passport through the official WeChat reservation channel: select a timed slot, retain the successful reservation and carry that same original passport. Read the current slot and holiday opening notice. The spring 2026 sightseeing line needs a fresh operator timetable. Arrange the reverse road leg before adding a second attraction.
What each named place changes
These roles decide a Jiangsu branch. For a water-town extension, choose its actual outbound ride, last return or separate night.
History base
Nanjing · 南京
Choose a full Zhongshan visit and a separate city-history period when a capital-city stay is the priority.
Boundary: Nanjing South, Nanjing Station, a Xinjiekou hotel, the Metro Line 2 stop and the reserved mausoleum gate are different points.
Garden base
Suzhou · 苏州
Choose a garden and old-city day rather than making Suzhou a train-platform pause between Shanghai and Nanjing.
Boundary: The Line 2/6 directions start at Suzhou Station; Suzhou North needs a different last leg. Reserve the museum and chosen garden separately.
Taihu base
Wuxi · 无锡
Choose Yuantouzhu for shore landscape when lake weather earns a dedicated day.
Boundary: Wuxi East, Wuxi Station and Chongshan Gate are separate stops; ask for current cherry-shuttle service, while Line 5 remains under construction.

Yangzhou · 扬州
Choose lake gardens, an old-city stay and a separate Grand Canal Museum visit.
Boundary: Yangzhou East, Yangzhou Station, the Slender West Lake gate and the museum require distinct rides; the museum normally closes Monday.
Optional water-town extension
Tongli or Zhouzhuang · 同里 / 周庄
Pick one only if its own Suzhou-area road or rail-plus-road access and return, or a separate town night, work.
Boundary: Tongli is in Wujiang and Zhouzhuang is in Kunshan. Neither is a Suzhou garden gate or an assumed current through-rail stop.
Separate river-and-canal direction
Zhenjiang · 镇江
Add it only when a separate heritage stop has enough time and an actual station pair.
Boundary: It needs its own nights, station pair and local visit beyond the Nanjing–Suzhou or Yangzhou days.
Before booking, and when a branch breaks
Book in this order: choose one branch and real exit city → search dated exact station pairs and the reverse on 12306 → fix each overnight base → read the chosen gate and admission notice, keep the booking document → arrange station-to-hotel, attraction and return rides. If an early flight leaves Shanghai, move the final night there or prove the transfer first.
Reservation or Monday removes a fixed visit
A Zhongshan Mausoleum reservation and the Suzhou Museum are separate from their train tickets. The Yangzhou museum normally closes Monday; its July 2026 notice supports foreign-passport booking but its official channel still controls the actual slot. Move the visit day or use an independently open city/garden visit; ask the operator for the passport booking route if its online flow fails.
Seasonal or weather-dependent ride fails
The Wuxi cherry shuttle and Yangzhou sightseeing line have spring 2026 notices; ask their operators about service for your date. The province's September 2026 warning flags fog, wind and temperature risk. Read current gate, closure and local transport notices; arrange a road return or drop the exposed site before jeopardising the station exit.
A water town or Zhenjiang is tempting
Tongli and Zhouzhuang are different Suzhou-area towns. Add at most one only with its actual outbound and last return or a separate night. Zhenjiang likewise needs an actual station pair and base. Otherwise keep the planned garden or museum day; the sample night count has no spare transfer block.
Departure city changes
If the chosen onward train or flight uses another city, rework the last hotel and reverse road leg before buying. For a same-day Shanghai flight after Nanjing–Suzhou, book the onward journey and leave time for the airport transfer, and a Yangzhou or Wuxi hotel requires a separate ride to the station on your ticket.
