Fujian: choose the port cities, island, mountain or tulou
For a first five-night Fujian heritage-and-coast trip, start with Xiamen (3) → Quanzhou (2). The island architecture and port-city history both get time; the price is leaving Pingtan, Mount Wuyi and the tulou villages for another trip. Pick Fuzhou → Pingtan for an island coast stay, Wuyishan for landscape and tea, or one Nanjing County (南靖) tulou cluster for earthen architecture.
These night counts are editorial allocations for usable arrivals and separate exits. Choose one branch; a late arrival, weather closure or long village road removes visiting time. None of the four plans is a short loop through the whole province.
Choose one Fujian branch
Use the answer that fits your reason for travelling, then fix its real entry, exit and last ride. The southern coast choice is also present in the wider East China comparison; the three alternatives below answer different trips within Fujian.
Hard stop: A Gulangyu ferry ticket needs the operator's current visitor route, pier, passport booking method and a mainland return; Xiamen city is the fallback when the ferry cannot run.
Choose a historic Fuzhou base and a separate Pingtan sea-and-stone-village stay. Use Fuzhou (2 nights) and Pingtan (2 nights); the island coast replaces, rather than extends, the Xiamen–Quanzhou port route.
Hard stop: Coastal sites and sightseeing vehicles can suspend during a typhoon. A rail arrival still needs a viable coast visit and a return ride.
Choose one Wuyishan-area base for the Nine Bend River landscape, scenic walks and tea country. Three nights allow an arrival, a principal scenic day and a weather or tea-town day; this mountain trip needs its own nights beyond a short coast weekend.
Hard stop: The scenic operator controls dated entry, internal sightseeing transport and the separate Nine Bend River raft. Book the raft through the scenic operator, or use a trail that its current notice lists as open.
Choose inhabited earthen-building villages rather than another coast or mountain day. Use Xiamen (2 nights) and one named Nanjing County village area (2 nights); Tianluokeng and Yunshuiyao are different clusters with different local loops. Nanjing County (南靖) is unrelated to Jiangsu's Nanjing city (南京).
Hard stop: Choose the actual cluster and local ride first. The UNESCO property is spread across Nanjing, Yongding and Hua'an; it spans separate county clusters, each with its own entry and local route.

Why this branch: Choose contrasting island architecture and Song–Yuan port history. Start with Xiamen (3 nights), then give Quanzhou (2 nights) its own streets and heritage day; this leaves the mountain, tulou villages and Pingtan for another trip.

When to cut it: If the mountain is the only reason for the journey and its intended access fails, change the date or keep the coast branch instead of counting a rail arrival as a scenic visit.

Entry, transfer and return: Start at the Xiamen hotel and arrange a dated road vehicle to the Nanjing tulou visitor centre (南靖土楼游客服务中心), then its current internal vehicle or booked local ride to the chosen cluster and lodging. Give the driver the specific visitor centre and cluster entrance before paying. Arrange the same return to Xiamen or a separately arranged onward station transfer; a train ticket to Nanjing County still leaves the village road leg. Keep an Xiamen final night for an early departure.
When to cut it: If the village-bound and return road legs remain unsecured, keep the Xiamen stay and defer the tulou branch. A rail arrival still needs a booked village road leg.
Gateways and return legs
Choose the actual station, pier, scenic entrance or village before buying the following night. A city or county name on a ticket leaves the local transfer to arrange.
Xiamen ferry and Quanzhou move
The Xiamen Ferry visitor guide controls the Gulangyu outward pier, passport booking and dated sailing. Return to the mainland before the Xiamen → Quanzhou hotel move; identify the rail stations on your two tickets, then the Quanzhou station-to-hotel leg. If the island boat fails, spend that day in Xiamen without sacrificing the Quanzhou base.
Fuzhou to Pingtan coast
Use 12306 for the exact Fuzhou-area → Pingtan station journey. Fujian transport officials describe bus, taxi and booked-car connections at Pingtan station; arrange the ride to your chosen coast and the return from it. If that last ride or coast access is unavailable, keep the Fuzhou city night and move or drop the island stay.
Nanping City to the Wuyi entrance
A 2022 Fujian transport notice documented a tram corridor from Nanping City station toward the Wuyi scenic area. Ask the tram operator about service on your date; arrange a taxi or hotel pickup as the alternative and settle the last ride to your lodging and chosen scenic entrance. Wuyishan North is a different rail station, so make a new ground plan for that ticket. Return through the station actually booked.
Xiamen road to one Nanjing cluster
Arrange a road pickup at the Xiamen hotel to the Nanjing tulou visitor centre (南靖土楼游客服务中心), then the chosen Tianluokeng/Taxa or Yunshuiyao village loop and lodging. Name the exact visitor centre and cluster entrance to the driver. Fujian transport reporting describes the visitor-centre road linking those villages; hotel-to-village transport still needs booking. Book the driver and return before fixing a flight. If either road leg is missing, keep the Xiamen base.

Before booking, protect the branch that can break
Ferries and coastal weather
Gulangyu needs the operator's suitable outward and return sailings. A Fujian Housing Department reprint of the signed July 2026 Pingtan operator notice named coastal sites that temporarily closed and sightseeing vehicles on the North Coast Ecological Corridor that stopped during a typhoon. The closure was a dated weather response. Keep an inland Fuzhou or Xiamen day to swap in, and keep a fixed departure away from a fragile island-last-day plan.
Wuyi entry and rafting
The Wuyi scenic operator separates scenic admission, internal transport, raft booking and notices. Choose the scenic entrance and the dated activity before locking a three-night mountain stay. If rafting fails but the permitted walks and tea day still meet your reason for travelling, use them; otherwise postpone this branch rather than treating the missed raft as a city day.
One tulou cluster, one booked road loop
UNESCO's Fujian Tulou property spans distant clusters; Fujian's 2026 village record identifies Nanjing's own named villages. Pick one cluster, its visitor centre and its local vehicle before reserving village lodging. If that leg remains unsecured, choose the Xiamen coast day and move the village stay.
Holiday rail and the last night
A July 2026 railway storm response shows that Fujian train service can change in severe weather. Search the exact date and stations on 12306; if the following flight is early, return to its departure city for the final night. Remove a stop rather than relying on an unissued cross-province or village transfer.
Sequence: choose the one branch and an actual flight/rail entry and exit → identify its pier, station, scenic entrance or tulou village → book the dated ferry or mountain admission and arrange both road legs that make the branch possible → choose overnight bases → hold the necessary mainland or gateway final night → read weather and operator notices shortly before travel.
