Identify the exact museum, building and exhibition
A city and the word “museum” are not enough. Write down the venue's official Chinese name, building, exhibition or gallery, intended date and visitor count. Then read the venue's current official visitor notice, including any holiday or temporary-opening announcement. Check ordinary admission and special exhibitions separately. Some museums require a timed general visit; others permit ordinary individual entry but reserve a popular gallery or paid exhibition. Opening hours, entrance gates and age rules also belong to the named venue.
Use a museum website linked from its own official domain or its named official booking entry. Do not treat a reseller tile, account creation or prefilled visitor profile as a completed admission order.
Complete the passport booking only when that venue requires it
- Open the venue's official reservation path. Check whether it offers website, app, WeChat, onsite service or more than one route. Do not assume a route used at another museum exists here.
- Choose the actual document type. If “Passport” or an equivalent foreign-document option is offered, enter each visitor's name and number exactly as on the original passport to be carried. If only a mainland ID field appears or a foreign phone number cannot pass verification, stop: use the venue's published support contact or staffed enquiry point. Do not enter a false ID number.
- Read the date and product before confirming. A free general visit, a paid special exhibition, a group booking and a guided tour can be separate products. Confirm how many people the order covers.
- Require a success signal. Save the successful order or confirmation message showing the correct venue, date, entry period, visitors and document details. A queue page, payment attempt or “submitted” screen is not enough.
- Recheck before travel. Look for a current closure or holiday notice, the named entrance and any cancellation deadline. Bring the original passport used in the order, not only a photo.
For a museum that explicitly permits ordinary walk-in entry, the success signal is different: a current official no-reservation notice for the exact building and visit type, plus its stated original-ID and entrance procedure. The venue may still apply temporary flow limits under its current notice.
Two current examples show why the rule is venue-specific
A confirmed real-name reservation is required
The museum's visitor guidelines require a free reservation through its official website within seven days of the visit, in a chosen entry period. Inventory currently opens daily at 17:00. It sends a confirmation message after success and requires that message and the original booked ID at the North Gate in the reserved period. The official English booking system is a starting point; the visitor notice does not itself prove which foreign-passport fields or overseas phone numbers will work for your account. If your passport cannot be selected or verified, contact the museum before relying on entry.
Ordinary individual entry needs no reservation
The current Shanghai Museum East instructions permit ordinary individual visitors to enter with an original valid ID through the B1 East Gate after security. Its Curio-City and Digital Gallery still require a special reservation, and paid special exhibitions have their own ticket notices. The page says “valid ID” without proving every passport scan or onsite check for this visitor; carry the original passport and ask the museum if its document handling is unclear. This East building rule must not be copied to the People's Square building.
If the booking or entry path fails
No passport option or phone verification fails
Stop before submitting mismatched details. Use the official museum's published contact or staffed enquiry route and ask what it accepts for the exact date, document and visitor. An enquiry is not a reservation. Keep another museum or day in the plan.
No successful order or no slots
Check whether booking has opened, the venue is closed, or inventory is genuinely gone. Use another official date, a different exhibit with its own rule, or an alternative venue. Do not pay an unofficial seller on the assumption that it can create official inventory.
Plan changes after booking
Open that museum's own cancellation and no-show wording and cancel through the official order if you will not attend. Save the cancelled state. A cancellation request is not proof of completion; no-show penalties are not uniform across museums.
At the gate, the passport or slot does not match
Show the original passport and confirmation to the staffed entrance or service desk. Ask whether the exact order can be corrected under this museum's rules. Do not assume a different ID, missed time slot or other building can be substituted.
Xi'an is a local case, not the national rule
The published Xi'an museum guide distinguishes Xi'an Museum, Shaanxi History Museum's main building and Qin-Han branch, and the Terracotta Warriors. Those venues have different passport routes, booking clocks and cancellation consequences. Use that guide after you choose a Xi'an venue; apply the method above to a museum elsewhere.

- One nationwide reservation window, release time, no-show rule or child-ticket threshold
- That every museum requires booking or every free venue admits walk-ins
- That a foreign passport, foreign phone number or payment card works in every form or gate
- That an unofficial reseller or guided tour includes the museum's admission order
- That a saved confirmation overrides a closure, special exhibition condition or wrong entrance

Official venue pages checked 26 September 2026. The Shanghai Museum says its old .net domain remains active until 1 January 2027 after a September 2026 move to .cn; re-open the museum's live official page when planning a later visit. The National Museum of China visitor notice gives the reservation and entry rule but does not verify a successful foreign-passport booking by us. No booking or passport-gate test has been performed.
