Xiamen: give Gulangyu a boat day and the mainland its own

Use each sight without losing the return

These are distinct choices, separate visit options. Times are planning allowances; each linked operator or city source has its own date and scope.

How many nights, and what actually fits

Default: three nights on mainland Xiamen, two full sightseeing days and four calendar days. The island day is weather-dependent and should be movable against the mainland day. Keep the outbound rail or flight on the following morning so a delayed return stays clear of a long-distance departure.

#1 → #4 or #5: one full day including both boats; these share the island crossing; choose one paid interior first and protect the mainland return. #2 → #6 → #7: allow 4–6 hours plus city rides; these cluster on south mainland; include #6 only after the temple confirms its visit-day entry rule; otherwise use #2 → #7. #8 → #3: allow 3–4 hours plus road travel; the indoor museum replaces a weather-lost outdoor block and Zhongshan serves dinner; the museum's Monday closure and the hotel walk set the limit.

1. Arrival · night 1Read the issued 厦门北站 / 厦门站 or XMN T3/T4 ticket, travel to the booked mainland hotel door and leave bags. If arrival is early, walk Zhongshan Road and eat; if late, stay near the hotel. Establish the next day's tourist ferry and both pier names before sleep.
2. Gulangyu · night 2Mainland hotel → daytime 东渡客运码头 with original passport → booked boat to 三丘田 (or the island pier on your ticket) → historic lanes and one paid rock/garden if time → selected island return pier → its real mainland arrival pier → car or current city transit back to the same hotel. A cancelled boat makes this the mainland garden day.
3. Garden + mainland city · night 3Hotel → 虎园路25号植物园西大门 → operator's short succulent/rainforest/lake route as open → signed West Gate exit. Choose Shapowei waterfront or Zhongshan Road for a meal, then return to the exact hotel. Add South Putuo only after the temple confirms its current hours, any reservation requirement and passport handling; university entry remains separate.
4. Departure morningLeave from the mainland hotel for the exact 厦门站, 厦门北站 or Gaoqi T3/T4 on the ticket. Read the station/terminal, first transit and road buffer; a ferry return from the previous day leaves this ground transfer necessary.

Two nights: keep one protected island day only if arrival is early, the correct daytime ferry is booked and the mainland return and hotel are clear; the garden becomes a shorter second choice, a conditional extra before a same-evening flight. Four or more nights: an island overnight, Jimei or a Fujian rail side trip needs its own bed, access and return decision; keep this mainland plan separate by sending luggage to an unbooked island hotel.

Book in the order that can break the trip

1. Fix arrival and onward exit. On 12306, save the Chinese station on both rail tickets: 厦门北站 and 厦门站 are distinct. For flights, retain XMN and the assigned Gaoqi terminal. Choose a hotel only after the final exit and luggage route make sense.
2. Book the tourist ferry with the actual passport. Pick daytime 东渡客运码头 and the island arrival pier/boat date first, then read the return options. Xiamen Ferry's FAQ allows a real-name-verified Alipay foreign-passport route and an original-passport staffed counter if the account fails; seats are never guaranteed by a counter. The operator's 2026 window is 15 days including today, but live availability and sea conditions control the result. Use the passport ferry guide for the app, counter, failed payment and missed-sailing steps.
3. Separate ferry admission from island attractions. A paid 日光岩 or 菽庄花园 product is separate from the boat. The operator's 2018 tariff lists CNY 50 and CNY 30 respectively as dated reference prices. The 2024 operator notice offers a combined pass at 三丘田游客中心 and a Shuzhuang single at 菽庄旅游驿站; core sight gates also sell their own tickets. Ask 0592-2062868 for the current fare and passport/QR route before choosing one interior within the protected return. The 2025 scenic pages give seasonal hours, subject to later notices.
4. Use the garden's own channel. Its 8 April 2026 notice lists CNY 30 full admission and official window, QR or 微信小程序 sale; it says third-party online sellers were unauthorised at that date. Buy for the actual West Gate visit and read current path/room notices, especially in rain. A foreign-passport online purchase remains untested.
5. Establish the hotel and both last legs. Ask about passport check-in, room conditions, arrival time, baggage storage, the pedestrian-street drop-off and the transfer from the mainland return pier. For a typhoon watch, retain a mainland hotel night that can still be used if boats stop.

Where to stay: keep the mainland return simple

Default: Siming around Zhongshan Road / 镇海路, on mainland Xiamen. It works for the food evening and for an evening boat that reaches 厦门轮渡码头 near Lujiang Road. The tradeoff is real: the normal daytime tourist departure is 东渡客运码头 farther north, so pay for a planned car or plan the metro/road leg and security time. Street-front rooms can be lively; ask about quiet-side rooms rather than assuming every central hotel is quiet.

Named mainland example: ibis Styles Xiamen Zhongshan Rd Walking Street · 宜必思尚品厦门中山路店, 318 Zhongshan Road (思明区中山路318号). Accor places it directly on the busy pedestrian street and describes the nearby Xiamen Ferry Terminal. That terminal serves a different route from Dongdu's default daytime boarding point. Establish the road drop-off that accepts luggage, the walk from it, room/noise preference and foreign-passport check-in on the actual reservation.

Switch toward daytime Dongdu if the boat is the main logistical concern: Holiday Inn Express Xiamen City Center · 厦门城市中心智选假日酒店 lists 64 Dongdu Road in Huli and the Cruise Center / Xiagu Port metro area. This gives a different starting base for a morning Dongdu boat, at the cost of a separate trip to Zhongshan Road and the southern garden. IHG lists no local or airport hotel shuttle; arrange ground transport independently. A Gulangyu island stay is a separate luggage, island pier and weather decision. Read the passport hotel steps before locking a non-refundable room.

Arrive at the right rail station or Gaoqi terminal

Xiamen North · 厦门北站: this is the outer high-speed gateway. The metro operator map places 厦门北站 and 镇海路 on Line 1. A Zhongshan-area hotel still needs the correct Zhenhai exit and a final walk or car drop-off; read current first/last train, luggage access and payment before relying on the metro. With a late train, use the station's designated taxi/ride pickup to the exact hotel address.

Xiamen Station · 厦门站: this is a different rail door on the island's central side; the metro map places 厦门火车站 on Line 3. For the Zhongshan hotel, take a planned transfer or road ride to its real drop-off, then walk the pedestrian-only last leg. Set the Chinese station on the issued ticket as the taxi destination rather than “Xiamen North” simply because an app displays it first.

Xiamen Gaoqi Airport · 厦门高崎国际机场 (XMN): read whether the flight uses T3 or T4; the airport FAQ publishes different terminal opening information and a T3/T4 shuttle, while the airport transport page lists current ground-mode categories. Neither is a promise of a direct metro train to the Zhongshan hotel. Use the terminal's licensed taxi/ride queue or a verified bus/metro combination to the hotel's car drop-off. Reread the exact departure terminal and time on the airline ticket before the exit morning.

Separate the daytime pier, night pier and return pier

Outbound by day: from the mainland hotel go to 东渡客运码头 (Dongdu Passenger Terminal), the normal tourist boarding choice to 三丘田 or 内厝澳. Show the original passport used for the real-name ticket and allow for security and the operator's published ticket-check cutoff. The ferry's route page lists those named routes and expressly says the ticket system and pier board decide the actual sailing. A resident-only boat cannot replace a tourist booking.

Outbound at night: the tourist service uses 厦门轮渡码头2号厅 opposite the Zhongshan waterfront, a different address and boarding hall from Dongdu. Choose it only after seeing a valid late tourist sailing and a usable island overnight or return; a beautiful sunset requires a booked way back or an island bed. The operator notes that some overnight returns use 钢琴码头, so the island departure may change too.

Return to the mainland: the operator's route page lists a 三丘田 → 东渡 daytime pattern, then 三丘田 → 厦门轮渡码头 evening pattern; 内厝澳 can lead to 东渡, 第一码头 or 嵩屿 according to the current service. A 6 September 2026 notice changed the 内厝澳 → 第一码头 tourist timing from 21 September, and its timetable is an image that this page leaves as an image rather than inventing a last boat. Before leaving the island, read the live departure board and **mainland arrival pier**. From Dongdu or First Pier, book the appropriate car or city transit leg to 318 Zhongshan Road; from 厦门轮渡码头, use the safe signed waterfront crossing and the known hotel walk. Keep passport/order until back on land. The ordinary tourist purchase includes a return within 20 days under the operator FAQ, but it leaves the reverse sailing unreserved and cannot prevent weather suspension.

Gulangyu: make the heritage island a full round trip

Use on the day: Siming hotel → 东渡客运码头 with security allowance → booked tourist boat → island 三丘田码头 (or the pier on the order) → historic lanes → choose 日光岩 or 菽庄花园 if a live separate ticket and feet allow → signed island return pier → the boat's actual mainland dock → same Siming hotel. Allow a full sightseeing day; the editorial 4–5 island hours exclude boat security, crossings and hotel legs. If the order names 内厝澳, start and finish the walking route at that side instead of pretending it lands at 三丘田.

UNESCO describes the island as a historic international settlement with local Fujian, Southeast Asian and European architectural influences, connected to Xiamen only by ferry. Walk the lived streets and gardens as a varied historic settlement. The public lanes need no additional scenic pass after landing, but individual buildings may be private, protected, closed or ticketed. Keep the seafront/return pier as a deliberate final point rather than walking uphill until the last sailing is tight.

Passport and cancellation: Xiamen Ferry says verified Alipay can register a foreign passport, while some mismatched document numbers require staff verification and the counter remains subject to remaining seats. Its 3 September 2026 typhoon suspension and conditional resumption show why a printed timetable remains conditional on sea weather. If a boat is cancelled before boarding, stay mainland and move the garden/city day forward. If already on the island, follow official pier staff and the operator's emergency return notice.

Choose one paid island sight before adding another

日光岩 / Sunlight Rock: the scenic operator places the entrance at 晃岩路62号 and describes the high view over the island. The climb and its stairs deserve about 1–1.5 hours on top of the walk from the pier. Its 2025 site page lists 08:30–18:00 for 1 June–30 September and 08:30–17:30 for the other months; a later notice or weather closure controls the visit day. The ferry ticket covers only the crossing. The 2018 operator tariff gives CNY 50 for a single rock visit; confirm today's product with scenic ticket help or its signed gate. A 2024 operator notice also names 三丘田游客中心 for a combined pass, not a rock single. Ask which original document or QR works and keep the last return to your named mainland pier. If stairs or wet rock make the climb poor, keep the lanes and choose a garden or earlier boat.

菽庄花园 / Shuzhuang Garden: the operator places its sea-facing garden on the island's south shore, with a piano museum as a possible interior. The published seasonal page shows an 18:00 Jun–Sep closing, while the operator's 8 October 2025 notice says 08:30–17:30 from 9 October; read the current date's actual admission rather than copying either into a timeless promise. The 2018 tariff gives CNY 30 for the garden, separate from the ferry; the 2024 window notice names 菽庄旅游驿站 for a single ticket or combined pass. Ask scenic ticket help for the current fare and passport/QR route. Allow about 1–1.5 hours plus the walk to the return pier. The garden and rock together are optional; the round-trip boat and mainland bed come first.

Botanical Garden: use the West Gate and a short real route

Use on the mainland day: hotel → 厦门市园林植物园西大门 at 思明区虎园路25号 → 1.85 km operator essence route toward the 多肉植物区 (succulents), 雨林世界 (Rainforest World) if its paths are open, and 万石湖 / 南洋杉草坪 → signed West Gate exit → arranged vehicle to the mainland afternoon stop → hotel. The operator site presents that route as about 2 hours; individual displays follow same-day notices. Its current notice list includes partial room/path works, so read today's map before choosing a longer circuit.

The 8 April 2026 operator notice gives CNY 30 full admission, CNY 15 half, and official in-person/QR/WeChat sales while warning that unauthorised third-party online bundles may fail. The visitor guide posts 06:30–18:00 from 1 May to 7 October and 06:30–17:30 from 8 October to 30 April, and says the West or South Gate is better for core visits; some other gates can put the core about an hour away on foot. Choose West Gate for the page route and establish passport handling at the official window if the online form cannot use it. In heavy rain or a path closure, cut the route to the open lower areas and leave before slippery hillside paths dominate the day.

Use mainland streets for the flexible evening

中山路 / Zhongshan Road: from the 318 Zhongshan Road hotel, walk the public pedestrian arcade toward the Lujiang waterfront, choose one clearly priced dinner and return by the signed hotel entrance. It is most useful on arrival or after a late boat reaches 厦门轮渡码头; the normal daytime boarding point is Dongdu farther north for Gulangyu. Accor places the named hotel directly on this busy road, so the food convenience comes with noise and a pedestrian last leg for a car. Shop hours and event barriers change; no scenic entry ticket is needed just to walk the street.

沙坡尾 / Shapowei: the municipal tourism plan identifies it as a separate old-city waterfront and food district. From the botanical West Gate, take a current road ride to the Shapowei/University Road area, use only public harbour-side streets and return to the hotel by an arranged ride. This is a flexible public-street hour. 南普陀寺 and 厦门大学 are nearby names on maps, but the temple’s current entry procedure and the university’s visitor-slot identity route remain unresolved for this plan. The university's own visitor guide requires official booking for campus entry; use the official temple contact in #6 if its entry matters; enjoy public city streets if that identity route fails. Obtain a separate official university slot before campus entry.

Day trips and island nights need their own return

Gulangyu overnight: reasonable only with a booked island hotel that accepts the actual passport, a boat with luggage rules that fit, and a morning mainland return before any onward transport. A daytime visitor ferry and a mainland hotel cannot simply be relabelled an island stay. A future island-depth guide could own island lodging and detailed street routes; this city guide already owns the complete day visit and mainland return. Jimei, Quanzhou or another Fujian rail stop: each requires its own site choices, station and hotel/return. The metro map establishes 厦门北站 as a gateway but leaves Jimei as a separate journey after a ferry day. Keep the three-night Xiamen core when those branches are unverified.

Eat on the mainland and let sea weather set the island day

On Zhongshan Road or Shapowei, try a clearly priced bowl of 沙茶面 (shacha noodles) or a 海蛎煎 (oyster omelette) when seafood fits your diet. Stall hours vary; a shellfish allergy requires a separate ingredients and kitchen-handling question. Read the posted price before ordering. Keep a simple breakfast near the hotel on the boat morning; a long food queue must leave the passport and boarding allowance intact.

Wind, rain and typhoons change the order of days. Xiamen Ferry documented a full suspension and conditional reopening on 3 September 2026. This past notice explains the mainland fallback; it is not a forecast for your visit date. Read the operator's notices and local weather before the island day; if service is stopped or uncertain, remain mainland and do the garden/open city streets if conditions there are safe. In hot months carry water and sun protection for the island's lanes; in heavy rain, favour the shorter garden route or a mainland meal over a slippery rock climb. Use only the operator’s reopened tourist service.

When a ferry, document or last leg fails

1. Alipay or passport purchase fails before payment: inspect the order list for an existing purchase, then use the operator's staffed tourist counter with the original passport, subject to seats. If payment was taken without a usable ticket, retain the transaction and ask 0592-3372020 (published 08:00–20:30) to reconcile it before paying twice. Stay mainland if no valid sailing remains; the ferry guide has the detailed steps.
2. A booked boat is missed: the operator's rule effective 1 September 2026 allows one after-departure change before 24:00 that day to an available sailing within the presale period, with a 20% same-day or 30% other-day fee; a changed ticket cannot be refunded or changed again. Open the original order or ask the staffed counter and choose a new island day only if the return still works.
3. All boats stop for weather: stay with official ferry piers. If on mainland, keep the mainland hotel and switch to the garden/city day if those are safe. If already on Gulangyu, follow ferry staff and official emergency return instructions; protect the hotel and onward-ticket plan with the operator's actual restart notice.
4. The return arrives at another mainland pier: before boarding, read whether it ends at 东渡, 第一码头 or 厦门轮渡码头. Use that pier's signed exit, then a current city vehicle to the named hotel door; use the pier where the return boat actually lands.
5. Rock/garden interior or botanical path closes: keep the historic island lanes and return boat, or take the garden's open short route. No separate scenic ticket is needed to finish the whole city plan when a paid interior is shut.
6. The station or terminal changes: compare the Chinese name on the 12306 ticket or airline booking with 厦门北站, 厦门站 and XMN T3/T4. Replan the mainland-hotel-to-gate leg with a real buffer; never use a boat-day timetable as a rail or airport connection promise.

Stop line: before paying for the three-night plan, name the mainland hotel door, outbound tourist pier, island arrival pier, likely return island and mainland piers, original passport, and exact exit station/terminal. A typhoon or sold-out boat makes the island day conditional, while keeping the mainland bed useful.

Sources and limits of this plan

Reviewed on 27 September 2026. The ferry operator's live ticket and pier board overrule general route descriptions. Its 6 September notice changed one return route from 21 September, and its 3 September weather notices show that even a listed route can stop. Scenic operator pages label seasonal rock/garden hours; the 2018 tariff and 2024 staffed-window notice provide dated price and purchase-route references, while today's admission quota, fare and passport QR remain unresolved. The botanical operator's April price/channel notice and visitor guide are more specific, while individual garden rooms and paths follow the same-day closure notice. The named hotel addresses come from their operators. The temple’s official site provides a street address and contact but no accessible current passport booking or hours; the Chinese museum homepage provides current main-hall hours and free entry, while its older English guide differs.
