CONDITIONAL

A second wallet and 12306 only when a real trip dependency needs them. Standalone DiDi only when AMap, Alipay or Weixin does not provide a working ride-hailing path or the itinerary critically depends on a second one.

Multiple AI chat tools, both Android translators, every city metro app, an OTA without a real task, or duplicate apps for a task already completed.

Standalone DiDi is a reversal, not a universal prerequisite. AMap announced an international-app ride-hailing route on 11 August 2026 with multilingual trip details, sign-in for numbers from 65 countries and regions, and Alipay or Weixin Pay. That is a platform statement, not a completed ride test: first test the path already inside AMap or a wallet, then add standalone DiDi only for a real second route.

Decide which line preserves the home number for OTP and which path provides data. Data, SMS and a Chinese number are separate jobs.

Prove one payment path

Set up one wallet route under the payment page, then keep independent physical cards where possible and useful RMB cash. Add a second wallet only when it closes a real gap. Registration or a linked card alone does not prove payment success; keep the cash/card alternative until the needed payment is confirmed.

Build destination recovery

Save the hotel, arrival point and first-night entrance using Chinese name, full address, phone and confirmed entrance.

Test translation

Download both language directions, test three short travel sentences and one printed Chinese address, then repeat with every network off.

Add rail only when needed

Use the official 12306 site/app or a confirmed staffed ticket route for a train trip; the app itself is not compulsory. Use the linked rail guide to check passport verification, issued-ticket status and station recovery.

Remove the primary phone

Open the hotel card, order, emergency numbers and payment backup from paper or the second device. If this still needs the main phone, setup is incomplete.

WHEN A REQUIREMENT IS MISSING

Four constraints do not need four new app lists

A Chinese number is not the universal starting requirement

Government guidance lists foreign-number starting paths for WeChat, Alipay and DiDi; this is not evidence for every app or every feature. It does not promise OTP success. Keep the foreign number reachable; add a local number only for a real task.

No WeChat does not mean no trip

If your Alipay route is usable, combine it with a physical-card or RMB-cash alternative, a device-appropriate map and typed translation or bilingual cards. Add ride-hailing only if needed. Ask the hotel, driver and guide for a phone number and one written contact route. If a supplier only accepts a WeChat contact or mini-program booking, either prepare that specific WeChat route or choose a supplier that confirms an alternative before payment.

No data

Open the tested translator, local address card, order copies and emergency numbers. Move payment to its offline alternatives and show the Chinese address at a staffed service point.

Primary phone unavailable

Use the second device or paper, hotel phone and separately stored physical card/cash. Do not keep every recovery route inside one phone.

When translations conflict

Shorten the original sentence and confirm the critical noun, number or place. Do not use a third AI as a vote. Move to a reviewed bilingual card, human interpreter or official staff.

Primary phone fails

Check your own first-night setup

This site has not field-tested the complete app setup. Run the checks relevant to your own phone and journey; a completed download or account signup alone does not prove the next task works.

Keep the actual home-number/SMS path and data plan you will use available.
On the phone you will carry, check the hotel and arrival entrance in your map; save the Chinese address independently.
With Wi-Fi and mobile data off, reopen the translator and test typed English and Simplified Chinese both ways. Check camera and speech separately if you need them.
For the wallet and rail account you actually need, follow the specialist guide and preserve a card/cash or staffed-counter fallback. Stop at a rate limit or account lock.
Confirm the hotel or driver can reach you through the working app, email or phone route agreed for your booking.
Put away the primary phone and retrieve the hotel address, ticket/order details, emergency numbers and payment backup from paper or a second device.

Typed translation, camera and speech have separate outcomes; a saved address does not establish offline route recalculation. A paper-card drill does not establish recovery of a locked account.

Common questions

Which apps are essential for a first China trip?

Cover payment, maps, translation and railway only when your itinerary uses it, then add a recovery layer outside the primary phone. The correct result is a task-complete stack, not a fixed number of app icons.

Do I need WeChat to travel in China?

Not universally. Prepare one usable payment route and a confirmed card/cash alternative. If your supplier requires a WeChat contact or mini-program booking, prepare that specific route or choose a supplier that confirms another route before paying.

Does every traveller need the standalone DiDi app?

No. Use the ride-hailing route already available to your device/account if the trip needs it; official guidance and platform announcements describe Alipay, Weixin, DiDi and AMap options without proving your booking will succeed. Add another only for a real gap; retain a confirmed staffed taxi/transport alternative.

Can I use machine translation for allergies or medical care?

Do not make it the final authority. Keep the original Chinese and move serious allergy, medication, diagnosis, consent, police, legal, payment or route-safety decisions to reviewed bilingual material, a human interpreter or official staff.

Solo trip with roaming and other payment tools

Context: the traveller plans Chengdu, Chongqing, Xi'an, Zhangjiajie and Jiuzhaigou in late September/October and already has international roaming.
15-second answer: WeChat is useful, not universally indispensable. Install it only if a hotel, driver, agency, guide or ticket flow names it as the contact/mini-program channel; start with one usable payment route and an independent card/cash alternative, a device-appropriate map plus Chinese address card, typed translation or bilingual cards and the supplier's confirmed phone/written contact. Add ride-hailing or rail tools only when the itinerary needs them. AMap and an installed wallet remain device/account-dependent candidates until the required task works.
Do now: Ask every remote-area supplier which channel it monitors and obtain phone plus one written alternative. Download WeChat from the official store if it materially closes a real dependency.
If it fails: Use the supplier's alternate contact, hotel front desk and ordinary phone/SMS; do not let one social account block accommodation or transport.
Boundary/reversal: If a Jiuzhaigou/driver booking exists only in a WeChat mini program, the recommendation reverses for that transaction. Verify before paying.

Set five tasks: recognise numbers/times, show an exact address, complete a transport/hotel exchange, state one medical/dietary need, and get help. On iPhone start by checking Apple Translate; on Android start with Google Translate by Google LLC only if available through a trusted store before arrival. These are candidates to test, not this site's completed device tests. Download English plus Simplified Chinese, prove typed translation both ways in airplane mode, test camera/speech separately and keep the printed cards.

Each city folder should also contain the hotel’s Chinese name, full address, phone, nearest station/exit, booking reference, next train/flight and a screenshot of the destination pin. A translation of a vague English place name is not a destination.

A UK rural resident has three to four months before a four-week solo trip

Direct answer: use the 12 weeks to become task-capable, not conversationally fluent.

Weeks 1–4: 20–30 minutes daily on pronunciation/tones, numbers, dates, time, money, directions and recognition of 入口/出口/卫生间/火车站/机场/酒店. Record and compare short phrases; do not memorise isolated word lists.
Weeks 5–8: rehearse one full scenario each week—airport to hotel, train station, check-in, ordering one meal, pharmacy/help. Use a remote tutor or exchange partner for a live correction session if available; rural location does not require a local class.
Weeks 9–12: run two no-English simulations weekly. Put the phone in airplane mode, show the Chinese card, listen for the price/time, type the answer, and recover from one deliberate misunderstanding.

Rehearse the finish test without a network: show the printed hotel, identify the displayed fare/time, explain that you do not understand, show a reviewed safety card and ask staffed help to call. A successful rehearsal does not guarantee a taxi, translation accuracy or account recovery after arrival.

Failure recovery: if speech fails, stop repeating louder. Switch in order to typed Chinese, large numbers, the address screenshot, the paper hotel card, then a staffed counter.

One week remains and the traveller needs an offline translator

Direct answer: choose by phone OS and finish the test today.

iPhone — Apple Translate: the current linked iOS 26 instructions use Settings → Apps → Translate → Languages; older versions may differ. download English and the Mainland Mandarin option that outputs Simplified Chinese; enable On-Device Mode. Restart the app in airplane mode with Wi-Fi off and type all five cards both ways. Test speech/camera separately; Apple warns on-device results may be less accurate.
Android — Google Translate by Google LLC: if available from the genuine Google Play listing, install/update before departure; download English and Chinese (Simplified) on Wi-Fi; install any offered language-pack update. Restart in airplane mode and test typed translation both ways, then camera separately.
Completion: after a restart with all connections off, typed English↔Simplified Chinese works, the hotel/address cards open and the traveller knows whether camera and speech passed. A download icon alone is not completion.
If it fails: Do not install an unknown APK. Use a built-in translator only if it passes the same test; otherwise rely on large-text bilingual screenshots, the printed hotel card and typed help at a staffed counter. If camera/speech fails but typing passes, keep typing as the default.
Stop line: Machine translation is not the sole confirmation for a diagnosis, medicine dose, allergy, legal consent, police statement or major payment. Ask a human to type/confirm the critical sentence; immediate danger uses 110/120.

A first-time visitor repeatedly finds little usable English

Direct answer: assume the next transaction will be in Chinese and close the loop visually. Show one question at a time, ask the other person to type, and repeat back the critical number, platform, date or address on screen before paying or leaving.

For a train, display train number, date, departure station and destination. For a taxi, show the Chinese address and pin, then confirm the plate. For food or medicine, show the exact restriction/ingredient rather than “anything safe.” For an emergency, move to a staffed public place and show the 110/120 card.

Reversal: a bilingual staff member is useful, but spoken agreement does not replace a visible ticket/order/address. The confirmation artefact remains the same in English or Chinese.

Direct answer: stay inside the staffed arrival area. Ask the information desk for a charging point using 我的手机没电了，请问哪里可以充电？ (“My phone is dead; where can I charge it?”). While charging, use airport Wi-Fi only if its current login works; do not make Wi-Fi the only recovery.

If the phone remains unusable, show the printed Chinese hotel address at the official taxi queue and pay with RMB cash or a physical card if accepted. If cash is needed, ask the staffed desk which authorised exchange counter or compatible bank ATM is currently open and confirm your notes/card and ID are usable; no terminal facility or successful withdrawal is assumed. Match the taxi/queue signage and keep the receipt; reject unsolicited ride touts.

Failure recovery: if the hotel address is not printed, ask the staffed airport desk to locate and write it from the booking email/reference. If no payment method works, contact the hotel from the desk phone and ask it to arrange a licensed pickup whose full cost/payment method it confirms. Do not accept “pay later somehow” from an unverified driver.

Phone stolen tonight; payment and the next train both depend on it

Direct answer: first reach a staffed safe place, then split security from travel continuity.

Ask hotel/station staff to call 110; obtain the police report number. Do not follow the map to confront anyone.
On a trusted alternate device, use the maker's official recovery page. For iPhone, iCloud.com/find can access Find Devices without the lost phone's verification code; mark the phone lost if Find My was enabled. If it was not enabled, protect the Apple Account through the official account route. For Android, Find Hub requires its own enabled-device, account and connectivity conditions; use a saved backup sign-in method if required and do not assume Apple's no-code flow applies.
Contact the mobile carrier to suspend the SIM/number, then contact banks/card issuers and payment-wallet support to freeze or monitor access. Exact foreign-account flows vary; use the issuer’s official route.
With passport and the existing train details, go to the staffed ticket counter for itinerary confirmation. Use an official taxi/public transport paid by cash/card; do not buy a duplicate train ticket until staff confirms the original status.

Apple says an iPhone on iOS 15 or later may still be located after erase. Do not remove it from Find My: removal disables Activation Lock and makes resale easier. If making an AppleCare+ theft/loss claim, do not remove it from the Apple Account or Find My until that claim is approved. Follow the exact maker/insurer instructions for your device before an irreversible action. Android remote erase has different location consequences and requires its own Find Hub conditions; check that flow rather than copying the iPhone rule.
