Decide with two real offers
Start with a daytime direct train and a hotel where you can sleep. Compare it with an overnight train that reaches your destination on the same useful day. Search your travel date on 12306's current train query; its results and the price payable for an assigned berth can change. This is a method for choosing between offers you can actually buy, not a timetable or fare for every route.
Write down the whole journey, not just the train fare
- For each train, record the date, train number, full departure and arrival stations, local departure and arrival times, available seat or berth class, and current payable fare. Compare trains that give you the same useful destination day. A city name may hide different stations.
- Calculate when you leave the first hotel and when you can really begin the destination day. Add both station transfers, station time, and the destination hotel's actual check-in or luggage arrangement. A morning platform arrival is not the same as access to a room.
- Compare the full costs: each ticket and station transfer, the original hotel night if it cannot be cancelled, any arrival-day room or luggage cost, and relevant booking or change charges. Count a hotel saving only after its cancellation terms and deadline are confirmed.
Pass four checks before using the night train as your hotel
- Issued berth: the order must show an actual berth you can use. A seat, no-seat ticket or pending waitlist is not a sleeper plan. A waitlist prepayment calculated from the lower-berth fare does not assign a lower berth.
- Sleep and bags: decide whether that berth, your luggage and the time aboard let you function the next day. Do not count a full sightseeing morning if you will need to recover from the ride.
- Arrival plan: verify the actual arrival station and an onward route, then ask your accommodation about early room access or luggage storage. Keep any fixed onward booking realistic if the train arrives late.
- Hotel night: read your existing booking's cancellation terms before claiming a saving. If the room is non-refundable, include its cost in the night-train total and judge the remaining time benefit on its own.
Book the branch that still wins
Day train: keep the sleepable hotel and buy the daytime train for the checked date and stations. This is the safer choice when no suitable berth has been issued, the next day depends on reliable rest, or a non-refundable hotel night removes the night train's cost advantage without a useful time gain.
Night train: check that an acceptable berth is issued for every traveller before cancelling the hotel or locking in the next leg. Recheck the room or luggage plan at arrival and keep the order details and original booking passport for boarding. Choose it only when the full comparison still gives useful time or lower total cost.
If plans change: reprice both options and check the live change or refund conditions before giving up an issued ticket. A different departure city is not an ordinary ticket change. Use the 12306 change and refund FAQ for the eligible action and fee, then confirm the new ticket is issued before treating the switch as complete.
