China Entry FAQ: Admission, Registration, Returning and Lost Passports

The entry basis, the arrival record and accommodation registration solve different problems. Use the passport and real journey for the first, provide accurate details for each arrival, and complete the registration required for the actual stay. A hotel booking, invitation or saved form does not substitute for an entry basis.

Haikou to Shenzhen and Hong Kong: which leg actually proves exit?

The traveller’s nationality is undisclosed. A Haikou–Shenzhen train is a domestic mainland journey, not proof of exit from mainland China. A plan to continue to Hong Kong without a confirmed cross-border leg also leaves the exit evidence incomplete.

Hainan’s regional exemption is limited to Hainan. It does not itself permit travel to Shenzhen. Before planning the island-to-mainland leg, establish whether the actual passport and purpose independently fit a nationwide basis, or obtain the appropriate visa through the competent procedure.

If a wider basis is confirmed, carry the complete route including the actual mainland-to-Hong-Kong exit segment and the documents for the destination. Ask the carrier/border officer to assess that real sequence. A ticket does not grant permission to reach a port outside the admitted area.

If only the Hainan basis is available, keep the stay inside Hainan and arrange a permitted exit from there. If already admitted on that restricted basis, contact the competent immigration authority before leaving it; do not board a Shenzhen train hoping the ticket fixes the restriction.

A visa-free visitor will stay with friends

The original traveller described a passport on the ordinary visa-free list and a 5–28 December visit. Confirm that the actual passport, purpose and dates still meet the policy. A qualifying ordinary visa-free visit does not require a separate visa application in advance, but an invitation cannot cure an ineligible passport or purpose.

Carry the friend’s real full address, contact and relationship/purpose information, plus the genuine exit itinerary. Do not buy a fake hotel booking to disguise a private stay. An invitation may explain the visit; it is not a substitute for eligibility or border admission.

Agree before arrival which of you will complete non-hotel accommodation registration. The traveller or host must file within 24 hours after check-in. Since 21 September 2026, the NIA online route covers non-hotel stays nationwide; Beijing also publishes the WeChat route 北京公安出入境 → 资讯指南 → 网上住宿登记办理 (Beijing Public Security Exit-Entry → Information and Guide → Online Accommodation Registration). Use an official route that accepts the real address. NIA guidance says the host helps with the first registration at an address. If online submission fails, use the responsible police station before the deadline; nationwide scope is not proof that a particular submission will succeed.

If online verification or submission fails, use the local police station or service window rather than letting the deadline expire. Keep the completed record or official confirmation and correct mismatched address/passport information through that channel.

Two mainland arrivals with Busan in between

Separate the two journeys when providing arrival information. For the first arrival, use its inbound sector, first stay and mainland exit; for the return from Busan, submit or confirm information matching that second arrival, unless a listed arrival-card exemption applies. Do not assume the first confirmation describes both journeys.

The official arrival rules do not establish a special requirement to create a new account or a particular new number for the second visit. Follow the current official form and check the submitted journey details. If online filing fails, use the port device or paper-card option.

Re-check the second entry basis independently. A visa needs the appropriate remaining entry and validity; an exemption must still fit the passport, purpose, route and any relevant prior-stay or cumulative limits. A side trip to Busan is not a universal reset and a second arrival card does not guarantee readmission.

Use the hotel/private-stay registration branch again for the actual accommodation situation. Keep the two arrivals’ documents separately so an officer can see which itinerary and stay belong to which entry.

A retired couple is questioned about a “three-month visa”

The reported Kunming arrival involved a 75- and 70-year-old couple and questions about their cities and return ticket. “Three-month visa” is ambiguous: entry validity, number of entries and permitted duration of each stay are different fields. Do not treat a long validity period as permission for a stay of the same length.

Before travelling, compare each passport and visa with a one-page dated route, the genuine first accommodation and final exit. Add Chinese addresses and contact details. Mark later flexible days honestly; do not invent fixed reservations to make the papers appear consistent.

At the desk, answer the specific question, show the matching record and keep both travellers’ papers distinct. If language or hearing creates confusion, request interpretation or clarification and a supervisor where appropriate. Call 12367 through an available official channel if further immigration guidance is needed; overseas connectivity and immediate case resolution are not promised.

Before moving on, clarify any uncertainty in the actual admission record or allowed stay with the competent authority. The couple’s age, complete paperwork and an existing visa do not prevent questions or guarantee admission.

A Michigan family fears that phones will be taken at arrival

The question cites a video rumour and an intended ten-day transit visit. It does not establish this family’s transit eligibility or an inspection probability. The official materials reviewed do not support saying that every ordinary family’s phone is routinely taken, or that inspection can never occur.

Keep the authorities and rules distinct. Border inspection can examine carried articles under its applicable rules. Order No. 841, in force since 15 September 2026, refers to relevant documents, materials or electronic data for identity and purpose checks; it does not describe a universal whole-device search. This page does not turn either text into a prediction about a particular officer or a customs search procedure. Its effective status was checked against the official text on 20 September 2026; this does not establish a whole-device inspection procedure.

Before departure, back up devices, use a strong passcode, keep them charged, and keep secure recovery access somewhere other than the same phone. Print the passport/entry evidence you legitimately need, itinerary, Chinese hotel address and essential contacts; carry an independent payment/cash fallback. Keep copies private. Normal data minimisation before travel is different from deleting or hiding material to obstruct an inspection.

If an officer requests a device or record, ask calmly which authority is acting and what is required; follow lawful directions. If it is retained, ask for a receipt, case reference and contact where available, and contact your consulate as appropriate. Do not promise release timing, film a restricted area or physically obstruct staff.

If the phone is unavailable, use the paper address and confirmed transport/payment backup to reach the accommodation when you are permitted to continue. If retention is prolonged, seek the authority’s and consulate’s advice and use a trusted separate device for necessary account recovery. None of these preparation steps validates the family’s claimed transit admission.
