The traveller’s exact question

Do I actually need a China visa—and, if I do, which office accepts my application?

Answer those in that order. Starting a form before ruling out a lawful visa-free route creates unnecessary cost; choosing a convenient office instead of the responsible one can make the application unusable.

Rule out four visa-free routes before applying

If no visa-free basis fits and you do not already hold a valid visa or other document covering this visit, use the visa-application route. A spouse’s visa does not cover you. Confirm your own passport, purpose and complete route before paying for an application.

Missing upload space or a returned application: preserve the record

The form cannot hold all required pages

Keep a full, legible local set ordered by person and date. Match each required item to an actual portal slot. Combine pages only if that portal accepts the resulting format and size; do not assume PDF, an overflow slot or later paper submission is available. If the last required item still cannot be attached, save the draft and the error, then ask the accepting centre how that specific item must be submitted. Do not omit it or change the declared trip to make the form pass.

The notice says returned, rejected or supplementary material

Read the actual notice before deciding what the word means. If the existing record offers correction or supplementation, repair the named defect there. If no permitted edit exists, send the application number, exact notice and a concise description to the same office and request the next step. Create a new number only when the notice or office requires it. A final consular refusal must not be relabelled as a simple upload error.

The invitation and passport do not match

For the Dubai Canton Fair question, obtain an invitation reflecting the real applicant and activity, and compare the country/name/passport fields with the form. Keep the old instruction and payment receipts, explain the correction honestly, and do not reuse a wrong invitation merely because someone suggested it. VIP/urgent payment does not decide acceptance or the visa outcome.

The original upload question does not identify its centre or portal version. This page therefore gives a usable stop-and-repair route without inventing an attachment limit or permission to merge files. The complete original questions and case-specific steps appear below.

Choose the category from the real purpose

L — tourism. M covers commercial trade; F covers non-commercial exchange; specialist purposes have their own categories.

L

Tourism

Ordinary leisure travel. Use the responsible office’s current tourism checklist.

M

Commercial and trade

Business and trade activity; invitation and activity evidence normally matter.

F

Non-commercial exchange

Exchanges, visits, study tours and other non-commercial activity.

X · Z · Q · S · G · R · C · D · J

Specialist purposes

Study, work, family, transit, talent, crew, permanent residence and journalism each have a separate document route.

Do not choose the category that seems easiest. The form, invitation and supporting documents must tell the same story about the actual activity.

EFFECTIVE 15 SEPTEMBER 2026 · STATE COUNCIL ORDER NO. 841

False material or a false statement can lead to a one-to-five-year entry ban

From 15 September 2026, the new rule covers a foreigner applying for a Chinese visa outside China or applying to enter at a port. If the applicant provides false material or makes a false statement, the immigration or visa authority may decide that the person is not allowed to enter China for one to five years.

  • Make the form, invitation, bookings and stated purpose describe the same real activity.
  • If something is wrong, ask the responsible office how to correct it before relying on the application.
  • An individual who issues a false invitation or other application material can be fined CNY 5,000–10,000; a unit can be fined CNY 10,000–50,000.

Boundary: the order says the authority may impose the restriction for false material or a false statement. It does not say that every correctable mistake automatically produces a ban, and this page cannot predict the authority’s case decision.

Residence, nationality and purpose answer different questions

Your passport and purpose help decide the visa category and required documents. Your application country, legal residence or lawful-stay status, and that office’s consular district decide where the application can be accepted. The nearest centre is not automatically the right one. An agency, spouse’s visa or paid premium service cannot transfer jurisdiction.

Your actual situationUse this routeResolve before paying or travelling to the office
Ordinary passport; applying where you live lawfullyUse the Chinese mission’s consular district for your address. If its instructions direct ordinary applicants to a service centre, use that centre.Check which address documents it accepts, which visa category fits your activity, and whether the current process requires online review before an in-person visit.
Applying while visiting or temporarily staying in another countryAsk the Chinese mission or authorised centre serving your actual location whether it accepts your nationality and lawful-stay evidence.Do not assume a tourist entry or hotel address is enough, and do not cross a border merely to choose a faster office. Wait for the local acceptance instruction.
A diplomatic/service passport or an activity outside ordinary tourismUse the mission’s instructions for that passport and purpose. Work, long-term study and family-related categories have different evidence.Do not use the ordinary tourist form to hide the real activity. Ask for the appropriate route before submitting inconsistent papers.
A family applying togetherAssess each traveller separately; then coordinate the trip evidence. One person’s F visa does not cover a spouse. The spouse needs an independently valid visa or exemption; marriage alone is not an entry basis.

Use the result: a person already accepted by Mumbai follows Mumbai’s receipt and status; a Dubai applicant with a return notice repairs that record using Dubai’s instructions. A Kolkata family does not inherit Mumbai’s timeline just because both offices are in India. For another location, the unresolved fact is the accepting office for your actual residence—not a worldwide centre total.

When asking an office, state your passport nationality/type, current country and city, the document proving lawful residence or stay, purpose and intended travel. Ask whether it accepts the case and which local submission step comes next. Send documents only through the office’s official channel; this website does not collect passport or application records.

In the United States: no appointment, but online preliminary review comes first.

  1. 01

Complete the application and upload the required materials in the new COVA system.

  2. 02

Respond online if the responsible mission asks for corrections or more documents.

  3. 03

Wait until the status says “Passport to be submitted”.

  4. 04

Then submit the passport and required originals under that mission’s instructions. The current US FAQ says this passport-submission stage is appointment-free.

“No appointment” does not mean “skip online review”. Fingerprints, interview requests, payment, mailing and collection details remain mission-specific. Everywhere else: check your own centre's page.

Keep four stages separate before judging a delay

Current stateWhat it means for the travellerNext action
Online form saved, submitted or awaiting correctionYou have an online record. It does not establish that the centre has accepted the passport or started a stated processing service.Read the current status and required corrections. Preserve the application number and follow the named local submission step.
Centre or mission accepts the physical submissionUse the dated receipt and approved service. Online submission and physical acceptance can be different dates.Record the receipt’s collection or tracking instruction. Add requests, holidays or interviews to the uncertainty; do not promise a personal completion date.
More evidence requested or final decision pendingPremium or urgent service cannot guarantee issuance. A returned online record and a final refusal require different responses.Supply the specific truthful correction if editing is offered; otherwise ask that office which step is permitted on the existing record.
Passport returnedCollection alone is not proof that the planned trip is covered.Check whether a visa was issued and compare its name/passport, entry validity, entries and duration with every planned mainland entry. Resolve a mismatch before travelling.

Mumbai example: its current local instructions state about five working days for normal service, about four for express and about two for urgent service with consular approval. The stated period is tied to submission at the Visa Centre, not simply clicking “submit” online. The original question gives 8 August and an 18 September trip, but does not establish the physical-acceptance date, local closures or additional review. Those dates do not prove that the passport will be ready.

Choose the financial outcome you can control: if the visa is unresolved, prefer refundable/changeable bookings whose latest cancellation time you can still meet. Set a reminder for that supplier deadline, using the supplier’s time zone; cancel or change before it if you cannot tolerate the loss. This is a booking-risk decision, not a visa-approval probability.

Ask for an itemised local charge: visa fee, centre service fee and any optional premium/courier item. Pay for a faster service only if the office accepts it for this case and you understand what the charge does and does not change. No global processing promise or nationality-based refusal probability is provided here.

URGENT NEED · PORT AUTHORITY DECISION

Urgent port-visa applications require evidence and an authority decision

This is not a convenience route for a planned holiday. Do not assume you can arrive without a visa and be issued one just because you have a holiday booking. The official scope is for foreign nationals who have urgent needs to enter China but do not have enough time to apply for visas at Chinese embassies or consulates abroad, including qualifying urgent business, engineering repair, visits or other urgent non-diplomatic and non-official activity.

  • Carry the invitation and evidence proving the urgent reason.
  • Ask the inviting organisation or individual to pre-declare and seek preliminary approval before departure.
  • For an individual port visa, enter through the port that issued it; organised tourist groups have separate conditions.
  • Tourist groups use a separate travel-agency advance-application route.

Issuance remains a decision by the port visa authority. Airline boarding and admission are not guaranteed by a plan to apply on arrival.

Six worked cases

These examples apply current official workflows; the responsible office decides from the submitted documents and the applicant’s circumstances.

01
VISA NEEDED

Case 1 — DEFAULT — Indian passport, two-week holiday

Conditions
Delhi → Beijing → Xi’an → Delhi for tourism.
Result
The unilateral and 240-hour routes do not fit this return holiday. Apply for the purpose-correct visa through the India centre responsible for your legal residence.
Next move
Open New Delhi, Mumbai or Kolkata only after checking which office has jurisdiction over your residence.
02
REVERSAL

Case 2 — REVERSAL — US passport, and the assumption goes both ways

Conditions
New York → Shanghai → Bangkok, with a confirmed onward ticket and all stops inside the permitted area.
Result
A US passport is not on the unilateral 30-day list, but it is on the 240-hour transit list. Because A and B differ, test the exact route before starting a visa application.
Next move
Run the visa-free decision and 65-port test; do not treat nationality alone as the answer.
03
NO US CENTRE

Case 3 — FAILURE — the US applicant looking for a visa centre

Conditions
Ordinary US passport; tourist visa; legally resident in the United States.
Result
There is no visa centre in the United States. Use the new COVA online system and the Chinese Embassy or Consulate responsible for your state.
Next move
Wait for the online status “Passport to be submitted” before delivering the passport and originals under the current US instructions.
04
WRONG SHORTCUT

Case 4 — FAILURE — treating the port visa as visa on arrival

Conditions
A normal sightseeing trip was arranged in advance, but no ordinary visa was obtained.
Result
The port authority assesses urgent need and supporting evidence; an ordinary planned holiday needs the correct visa before departure.
Next move
Postpone or obtain the correct visa before departure; do not gamble at check-in.
05
URGENT ROUTE

Case 5 — EDGE — genuine urgency

Conditions
A critically ill relative is in China; the traveller has hospital and relationship evidence but cannot obtain an ordinary visa in time.
Result
This can fall within the urgent-need scope for a port visa, subject to the port authority’s review.
Next move
Ask the inviting party or individual to pre-declare and seek preliminary approval before the traveller departs.
06
MISSION ROUTE

Case 6 — EDGE — the diplomatic or service passport holder

Conditions
The applicant is not using an ordinary passport.
Result
Visa Application Service Centres normally handle ordinary passports, not diplomatic or service passports.
Next move
Contact the responsible Chinese embassy or consulate directly instead of using this centre directory.

Failure recovery

R1

R1 — You cannot tell which office is responsible for you.

Trigger
You live far from the nearest office, recently moved, or the centre list does not explain jurisdiction.
First action
Open the embassy or consulate jurisdiction page for your legal residence.
Alternative
Use the office’s published email or phone before filing.
Escalation
Do not file through a convenient centre in another country without written confirmation that it accepts your residence status.
R2

R2 — The processing time will not fit your trip.

Trigger
The local preliminary review, appointment or collection window extends past departure.
First action
Stop relying on a generic processing estimate and ask the responsible office about its current service options.
Alternative
Change the trip date or test a lawful visa-free route using the actual ticket sequence.
Escalation
Do not buy a non-refundable workaround or assume a port visa will rescue a planned holiday.
R3

R3 — Your application is refused, or documents are returned.

Trigger
The office asks for corrections, more evidence or does not issue the visa.
First action
Use the written reason or requested-document list; correct that exact defect.
Alternative
Ask the same responsible office whether and when it will accept a new submission.
Escalation
There is no reliable global reapplication rule; do not switch offices to conceal the earlier application.
R4

R4 — You booked non-refundable travel before the visa was issued.

Trigger
Flights or hotels were booked before the visa outcome.
First action
Check change, cancellation and insurance terms immediately.
Alternative
Ask suppliers for a date change while the application is unresolved.
Escalation
A booking loss does not create visa eligibility or require the authority to accelerate the case.

What this page cannot decide globally

  • Your final fee or completion date: both are office- and case-specific.
  • Whether a third-country office accepts your residence or legal-stay evidence.
  • A universal refusal or reapplication timetable: use the responsible office’s case instructions.
  • Appointment, fingerprint, interview, mailing and collection rules outside the United States.
CHECK BEFORE YOU RELY ON THIS

Your entry check

  • The applicant’s own valid visa, other entry document or exemption was checked against the actual purpose and route
  • The category matches the real activity and supporting evidence
  • Every form, invitation and supporting record accurately describes the same real purpose
  • The office accepts the applicant’s jurisdiction and lawful-stay or residence evidence
  • The office’s own current document, fingerprint, appointment, fee and service pages were opened
  • US applicants waited for “Passport to be submitted” before delivering originals
  • No non-refundable booking depends on an estimated visa completion date
  • No ordinary holiday booking relies on guaranteed walk-up port-visa issuance

Common questions

How much does a China tourist visa cost?

There is no single worldwide price. Open the fee page for the responsible embassy, consulate or Visa Application Service Centre and check nationality, entries and service level.

Is processing always four working days?

No. Mumbai currently describes about five working days for normal service, about four for express and about two for urgent with consular approval, tied to submission at the Visa Centre. Online submission alone does not start that stated clock. Other offices, corrections, holidays and consular review may differ.

Is there a Chinese Visa Application Service Centre in the United States?

No. Applicants use the new COVA online process and the Chinese Embassy or Consulate responsible for their state. Under the current US instructions, wait for “Passport to be submitted” before the appointment-free passport-submission stage.

Can I apply in a country where I am only visiting?

Do not assume so. A third-country office can require proof of lawful residence or stay and may apply local acceptance rules. Ask that office before filing.

Can I get a tourist visa on arrival at a Chinese port?

Do not plan on it. The port authority assesses urgent need and supporting documents; an ordinary holiday needs the correct visa before departure. Organised groups have separate conditions.

What if information in my application is wrong?

Do not knowingly submit false material or make a false statement. From 15 September 2026, Order No. 841 allows the authority to decide a one-to-five-year entry ban for a foreigner who does so in an overseas visa application or a port-entry application. The order does not say that every correctable mistake automatically triggers that result; ask the responsible office how to correct an error before relying on the application.
