Tianmen Mountain: tickets and routes 天门山

Choose a day and a route

Tianmen is the city-side mountain in Yongding, separate from the sandstone pillars in Wulingyuan and the Grand Canyon glass bridge. A Forest Park ticket does not cover it. Allow roughly 5–7 hours on site plus queues and the city approach; this is a planning allowance. For both mountains, count complete sightseeing days before hotel nights.

The 31 August 2026 operator notice opens two-way A/B/C, suspends one-way 1/2 and keeps the main cableway's Middle Station–summit section out of service. A/B use the lower segment and a scenic-road bus. If ice, dense fog or heavy rain makes that road unsafe, the operator changes A/B to C transport.

Entry hours: the current scenic notice carried by Tongcheng, checked 29 September, lists passenger operation from 07:30 for 25 September–1 October, and 07:00 for 2–7 October, with admission ending at 16:00. The August notice's ordinary start was 08:00. Use your issued session and the date's notice; the admission cutoff is not the last descending cableway or city-shuttle time.

Choose a clear mountain day if broad views matter, but a forecast cannot guarantee visibility. Fog can leave the arch visible only intermittently; heavy rain or wind can remove more than a viewpoint. Bring a layer, grippy shoes, rain protection, water and a simple lunch. If stairs, queues or exposed paths are a major difficulty, ask the operator about the entire route before buying.

A, B or C: start, included journey and city return

The letters change the approach and descent; all three reach the cave and provide the upper seven-stage escalator for summit access. These are the operator's construction-period sequences:

Arrival: A validates at the city lower station on Dayong Road / 大庸路, Guanliping / 官黎坪. B/C validate at Mountain Gate. Some sellers direct B/C passengers to a city shuttle check-in first. Follow the voucher's boarding point and allow that transfer before the session; otherwise book a taxi to 天门山山门（天门洞快线索道下站）. Show the route letter with the Chinese destination.

Inclusions: Tongcheng's construction-period announcement lists admission, the lower main cableway in the booked direction, the Middle Station–cave bus, upper escalator both ways and the Cave Express Cableway for A/B. C uses the express cableway both ways. Read your product for the city shuttle and extras; a broad “cableway ticket” label does not establish admission or every transport leg.

Buy the right ticket with a foreign passport

Budget for a package. The current operator announcement on Tongcheng states a CNY 285 ordinary-adult A/B/C package during reconstruction. The CNY 72 admission component is not the whole trip. A reseller can add services or insurance; read the selected-date payable total rather than the cheapest category on a search card.

1. Choose the date, line and session. Select Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park and the A/B/C package you intend to use. Keep your party on compatible lines and sessions; consider separate orders when the seller will not partially refund a multi-person booking.
2. Choose a seller supporting your document. KKday's Tianmen listing explicitly permits passports; Trip.com lists A/B/C products. Read the chosen package's identity requirements. Enter the passenger's name and document details exactly as requested from the same passport you will carry. If a form offers only a Chinese identity card, stop and contact the seller or scenic ticket service; never substitute another person's ID.
3. Check the issue result. Save the issued confirmation, route, date/time, start or shuttle check-in point, inclusions, support contact and cancellation terms offline. Payment or pending supplier confirmation does not secure entry. Ask the seller to correct any promise of a direct city-to-summit main-cableway ride unless a newer operator notice confirms reopening.
4. Bring the original passport and ticket. The current notice directs a passport holder to present the electronic/paper ticket and undergo manual identity inspection before scanning in. Use the staffed check-in point for the issued line; do not rely on a Chinese-ID turnstile recognising your passport.

If A is unavailable: compare a confirmed B or C slot and its approach/return. Missing stock on one platform does not prove every route sold out. A seller offering A/B/C selected at random cannot protect your preferred start. If no usable issued slot exists, move the visit date or keep another Zhangjiajie day before committing a non-refundable room.

Cancellation: the Tongcheng notice currently carries a temporary ticket-refund handling-fee waiver for visit dates 19 May–12 October 2026, with unused-ticket requests due by 17:00 on the visit day; passenger/date changes and partial refunds of multi-ticket orders are unsupported. That is a dated notice, not every seller's contract. KKday's linked listing says completed orders cannot be cancelled or changed. Read your order's own terms before payment and use the original seller for a refund or reissue.

Tianmen Cave: stairs or the lower escalator

Cave Square · 天门洞广场: look up at the arch and the steep stairway framed between rock walls. Allow roughly 20–30 minutes for this first look and photographs. The opening and summit are higher stops; reaching the square does not finish the uphill choice.

The 999-step stairway · 上天梯: climb toward the arch only if steep steps and heights suit you. Plan roughly 30–45 minutes with pauses, longer in queues. Wet steps, fatigue or knee pain are reasons to use the operating bypass or keep the square view. These are planning estimates, not a climb to finish regardless of conditions.

Lower escalator · 登天门扶梯 / 下段扶梯: this bypass connects the square and cave, separately from the included upper system. The construction-period announcement says uphill use is charged unless your product adds it; downhill use is currently free. Check the uphill add-on and operating entrance before joining the stair queue.

Upper escalator · 7级穿山自动扶梯 / 上段扶梯: board behind the opening for the summit and keep the signed link for the return. Cableways and escalators do not certify continuous step-free travel: boarding areas, short stairs, queues and summit paths still matter.

Choose a summit walk

At the upper escalator exit, read the current route board and save that location as your return point. Choose one sector first. The paths offer cliff faces, wooded stretches and views below; a complete east-and-west circuit adds walking without guaranteeing a clearer view.

West-side cliff walk: the usual first choice

Follow the signed open west route to West Line Glass Walkway · 西线玻璃栈道 and Ghost Valley Plank Road · 鬼谷栈道. The glass section gives a view through your feet; the solid cliff path gives the broader experience of walking alongside the rock wall. Skip glass if it adds discomfort, and ask staff for the open solid-path continuation.

For a shorter visit, allocate roughly 1½–2 hours to a west-side out-and-back, turning sooner when the signed distance, crowds or return margin require it. Walk only as far as you can retrace to the escalator. Hunan's place description identifies Ghost Valley's extended cliff path; the name is not one short viewing platform.

Cherry Bay and Tianmen Temple: add a longer walk

Cherry Bay · 樱桃湾 joins the east, west and temple routes. Tianmen Temple · 天门山寺 adds courtyards and an architectural stop on the southern summit. Allow roughly 2½–3½ hours for an extended summit visit and confirm the open return to the upper escalator on the current board before leaving the west route. Reverse before the extension if the return or your stamina no longer fits.

The summit sightseeing chairlift is an optional separate product. Make it part of the return only after staff confirm its operation, ticket and exit. The cave and one useful cliff section do not require buying it.

Panlong glass and the east-side closure

Panlong Cliff Glass Walkway · 盘龙崖玻璃栈道 is another optional transparent path. The 13 May provincial notice says the separate East Line Glass Walkway · 东线玻璃栈道 closed from 12 May for repairs, while Panlong and West Line glass remained open then. No later official reopening notice was found in this check. Use today's boards for openings and any shoe-cover charge; keep the east glass section out of a fixed itinerary.

Get back to your hotel or departure hub

1. Fix the descending cutoff before the summit walk. Ask staff for the last usable cave descent and final city-shuttle boarding time. The admission cutoff is not either of those times.
2. Return to the upper escalator, cave and square. A uses express cableway → Mountain Gate → operator shuttle → city lower station. B's default uses bus → Middle Station → main cableway → city lower station; its voluntary express descent ends at Mountain Gate.
3. For C or B's alternative, finish the gate-to-city leg. Use the order's shuttle and follow staff to its boarding line. If it is absent or no longer running, use the booked legal taxi/hotel pickup from that staffed gate. Confirm the destination is 天门山索道下站 or your exact hotel.
4. Collect bags before departing. The city lower station is not your hotel or Zhangjiajie West station. Add hotel collection, then the airport/station on the ticket. Keep an early departure behind a city-side hotel night instead of relying on a fast mountain exit.

If weather, a ticket or a path changes

• Road transport closes: A/B can convert to C. Before boarding, establish the new validation point, mountain-gate finish and city return. Do not walk the closed scenic road or wait at Middle Station for a cancelled bus.
• Passport/order mismatch: stay at the staffed ticket point and contact the issuing seller with the order. Staff must resolve identity validation; a receipt does not authorise another passenger.
• Glass or summit path closes: keep the cave and an open solid-path view. If no satisfying open route remains, ask the original seller about cancellation/rebooking before validating.
• Return margin shrinks: omit the temple/second circuit, retrace to the escalator and finish the city leg. Retrieve bags and protect the onward departure.
