Zhangjiajie sights by priority

Start with the pillar landscape if that is why you came. Tianmen adds a different mountain shape and a dramatic transport journey; its exposed paths suit travellers comfortable with heights. The canyon, cave and lake are alternatives for a longer stay, each with a separate ticket.

How long, and what goes together

Three usable days / usually four nights: allow one full high circuit in #1, a shorter valley visit with an afternoon base move, and a separate full day for #2. Arrival and departure sit outside those blocks. For three uninterrupted sightseeing days or a flexible weather day, allow longer; count the actual flight or train times before booking nights.

Two full days: choose one Wulingyuan high circuit and Tianmen if both are priorities. Stay in Wulingyuan first, then move to Yongding after the park. For a slower landscape visit, keep two Wulingyuan days and omit Tianmen. A short stay gives up both the valley depth and a weather reserve.

• #1 high circuit → #1 valley: use different visit blocks, roughly 1½–2 days total. The elevated panoramas and stream-level walk show different sides of the same park; reserve the right gate for each entry.
• #1 short South Gate return → Yongding base: allow the morning for the walk and the afternoon for the road pickup, luggage collection and hotel arrival. This puts the bags in the city before #2; keep that afternoon free of another attraction.
• #4 cave → #5 lake: allow roughly 6–8 hours with lunch and road transfers. They add underground formations and boat views to a Wulingyuan stay; use this pairing only when both visits and the boat service fit their entry windows.
• #1 → #2: reserve separate mountain blocks. A late park exit followed by a Tianmen entry is a poor trade for either experience.

All visit and combination durations here are planning estimates, including time to pause but excluding unusually long queues. With one less block, drop #3–#5 first; retain one high Forest Park circuit and select either its valley or Tianmen. Compare the full two-, three- and four-day choices →

Book ahead

1. Fix the exact arrival and departure hubs, then count the available mountain blocks and choose bases.
2. For Wulingyuan, choose the first-entry date, gate and session. The official bureau ticket page links the WeChat mini program 张家界一机游 and lists admission plus eco-bus at CNY 236 for four consecutive days. Add Tianzi cableway up and Bailong Elevator down when those directions are absent from the package. Arrange later South Gate entry under the issued ticket’s repeat-entry rules.
3. For Tianmen, choose the date, entry period and A/B/C route. A starts at the city lower cableway station; B/C start at the Mountain Gate. Match the package to the current operator route notice, including the middle-station road transfer, seven-stage escalator and express cableway.
4. Choose changeable hotel rates until the scenic tickets and onward departure fit. Add the canyon, cave or lake only after the core visits and return transport fit.

For a foreign passport, use the seller’s passport category and carry the same original document. If an official form accepts only a Chinese identity card, use the scenic-area staffed ticket service or a seller explicitly supporting your document before committing the hotel or transfer.

Trip.com Forest Park products and Tianmen products are purchase alternatives. Read the named product’s gate, route, inclusions and refund terms; a transport-only bundle still needs admission. Budget admission, scenic vehicles, hotel transfers, meals and accommodation separately.

Where to stay

Wulingyuan East Gate for the pillar landscape

Stay in Wulingyuan town near East Gate / Landmark Gate (武陵源标志门／东门／吴家峪门票站) for #1 and nearby #3–#5. This removes a city-to-park road journey each morning and gives you restaurants after the visit. The tradeoff is the transfer to Tianmen and the city’s departure hubs.

Pullman Zhangjiajie · 张家界京武铂尔曼酒店, 高云路188号, is a named full-service option. Accor estimates a ten-minute walk to the Forest Park; allow extra time to reach the booked East Gate entrance. Its larger hotel setting trades a doorstep gate location for facilities. Compare the actual room, cancellation and accessible approach for your party.

Yongding city for Tianmen and transport

Choose the city lower cableway station area for #2, a late arrival or an early departure. The price is a road commute if you use it for every Forest Park visit. Hilton Garden Inn Zhangjiajie Tianmen Mountain · 张家界天门山希尔顿花园酒店, 机场路32号, is a named city-side option. It requires a street/car leg to 天门山索道下站; allow around 15–25 minutes for the pickup and short car journey as a planning buffer. The hotel publishes its location and contact, rather than a gate-to-door transport promise.

For the mixed visit, move once after the final Forest Park return. Have the Wulingyuan hotel store your bags, arrange pickup at the actual exit, collect luggage, then continue to the city hotel. Give the driver both Chinese addresses, luggage needs, pickup point and agreed total in writing. For an early train or flight, spend the preceding night near the required city hub; avoid making a first scenic-area bus essential to departure.

Ask the chosen property to accept the booking passport, late arrival and any essential room or step-free requirement. Read the exact stay dates and cancellation deadline; a regional hotel search can include properties beside a different gate.

Getting to Zhangjiajie

By air: Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport (张家界荷花国际机场, DYG) is the city airport. After collecting bags, follow the airport’s signed taxi area or meet a prearranged hotel car at its agreed arrivals pickup. Show your hotel’s Chinese address. Hunan’s airport guide identifies the airport; book the flight that actually operates on your date.

By rail: Zhangjiajie West (张家界西站) and Zhangjiajie Station (张家界站) are different hubs. Use the full station printed on the issued ticket, including for the return. From the station exit, follow the official taxi signs for a direct hotel journey. Zhangjiajie Station has the adjoining Central Bus Station (中心汽车站); use its staffed counter for a Wulingyuan-town service if the day’s departure and luggage arrangements fit. Choose the final road leg: allow roughly 30–45 minutes from a city hub to a city hotel, or 1–1½ hours for a direct Wulingyuan hotel journey, after you are outside with your bags. These are door-to-door planning allowances. A metered taxi or the car provider’s written quote gives the charge; agree the total, tolls and luggage before departure. At the bus counter obtain the current fare, next departure and exact drop-off before paying, then keep a final taxi/walk leg to the hotel.

With a late arrival, sleep in the city when the Wulingyuan transfer or reception no longer fits, then move in daylight. For a Changsha connection, use your dated rail booking to 张家界西站 and leave the airport-to-station and station-to-hotel margins; arrival in Hunan still leaves a substantial journey.

Getting around

Outside the parks: use roads between Wulingyuan town, Yongding, the canyon, cave and lake. For a rural outing, arrange the return pickup before entering and save the driver/provider contact. The gate and exit matter: a B-line canyon visit exits at the canyon end, while B1 ends by the bridge. For luggage or limited stamina, a booked car removes additional town transfers.

Inside Wulingyuan: eco-buses connect named parking hubs; cableways and Bailong Elevator handle vertical movements. Show the next Chinese node before boarding. Return to the gate tied to your hotel pickup or stored equipment, and shorten the circuit if the remaining descent/eco-bus chain is uncertain. Before leaving: save the actual railway station or DYG, issued time, pickup and hotel address offline. Finish the final outing early enough for bags, road travel and the carrier’s arrival cutoff. Arrange a city-side night when an early departure would otherwise depend on a scenic-area transfer.

Sights in detail

1. Wulingyuan / Zhangjiajie National Forest Park · 武陵源／张家界国家森林公园

Yuanjiajie gives close views of isolated sandstone pillars and the natural First Bridge; Tianzi’s Helong Park area opens wider peak panoramas. Golden Whip Stream gives a wooded valley walk beneath the formations. Pick a high circuit plus a valley block for variety; collecting every plateau spends more time in queues and eco-buses.

• Hours: Park homepage: 07:30 opening, 16:00 last entry, 17:00 closing. Start a high circuit early; the gate’s last-entry time is too late to begin a full mountain loop.
• Tickets: Official admission + eco-bus is CNY 236, valid four consecutive days; cableways and elevators cost extra. Admission alone is CNY 165; the CNY 3 insurance is optional. Select the vertical directions you need; a “three cableways and one elevator” product has its own usage terms.
• Time: 1½–2 days for the high circuit and a shorter valley visit. One full day covers the high route below with fewer optional stops.
• Address: 武陵源核心景区（武陵源标志门／东门）· 湖南省张家界市武陵源区吴家峪门票站. Use this officially named gate for the high circuit; the South Gate is 森林公园门票站.
• Getting there: From an East Gate town hotel, walk or take a short taxi to 武陵源标志门, then use the eco-bus to 天子山索道下站. For the valley alternative, ask the driver for 森林公园门票站／南门 and arrange that exit’s return pickup.
• How to visit: East Gate → Tianzi cableway → Helong Park → eco-bus to Yuanjiajie → First Bridge and selected viewpoints → Bailong Elevator down → eco-bus to East Gate. Keep Ten-Mile Gallery optional. For a shorter valley visit: South Gate → Dayangba (大氧吧广场) → Golden Whip Stream toward Mother-and-Child (母子情深) → retrace to South Gate, turning sooner at your limit.

Choose another park block: Huangshizhai offers a separate raised viewpoint circuit from the South Gate side. Choose it instead of another high area when that side fits your hotel and transport; adding its ascent to the full high circuit reduces the valley time. The complete Golden Whip Stream route is a substantial through-walk, so use the short out-and-back for a hotel-move morning.

2. Tianmen Mountain · 天门山

Tianmen’s huge rock arch, cliffside paths and layered ascent give a different experience from Wulingyuan’s pillars. Keep the cave and a selected summit viewpoint as the core. Glass walkways are optional for travellers comfortable with heights; exposed paths and stairs make the day physically demanding.

• Hours: Operator notice: ticket sales 07:30–16:00; operation starts at 08:00. Use the entry session on your order.
• Tickets: CNY 72 government-guided admission is the base component. Buy the dated A/B/C transport package and read its included cableway, road and escalator segments; optional summit access can cost extra.
• Time: One full day, roughly 5–7 hours on site plus queues and the city approach.
• Address: 天门山景区（A线：天门山索道下站）· 湖南省张家界市永定区天门山索道下站. The operator’s named departure point is the city lower station; B/C entry uses 山门 instead.
• Getting there: Take a city taxi or walk from a suitably located hotel to 天门山索道下站 for A. For B/C, use the scenic-area shuttle to 天门山山门 and follow the issued order’s meeting point.
• How to visit: Current A route: city lower station → middle station → scenic-road vehicle to Tianmen Cave → seven-stage escalator to summit → selected open summit path → escalator back to cave → express cableway down → Mountain Gate → shuttle to the city lower station. The upper main cableway remains closed.

When ice, fog or heavy rain makes the middle-station road unsafe, the operator changes A/B to the C transport sequence. Follow the current issued route and staff directions, or postpone when the cave/summit result or safe return is lost. A single escalator does not make the complete visit step-free.

3. Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon · 张家界大峡谷

Choose this for the suspended glass bridge and a descending canyon walk, with water and cliffs at a different scale from the Forest Park. A bridge-only visit suits the view or height thrill; bridge plus canyon gives a longer landscape outing. Extra zipline, slide and other experiences need their own inclusion and safety rules.

• Hours: Operator homepage displays 08:00–16:00 entry. Use the date/session on the actual order because holiday windows can differ.
• Tickets: Operator static display: CNY 91 canyon-only, CNY 125 bridge-only, CNY 216 bridge plus canyon. The page is undated and retains older promotions; use the official dated ticket order for the payable price and extras.
• Time: 3–5 hours for bridge plus canyon; add road travel. A bridge-only product uses less time and ends at a different exit.
• Address: 张家界大峡谷（游客中心）· 湖南省张家界市慈利县三官寺乡, the operator’s published locality. Match the ticket’s visitor-centre/bridge entrance.
• Getting there: Arrange a car from Wulingyuan town to the ticket’s visitor entrance. Give the driver the route letter and return exit before leaving: 峡谷出口 for B, 玻璃桥出口 for B1.
• How to visit: B goes visitor centre → glass bridge → Bridge East Experience Centre → selected descent → canyon/lake boat → canyon exit. B1 reverses the main direction and finishes at the bridge. Choose one issued route, with a return pickup at its actual exit.

4. Huanglong Cave · 黄龙洞

Choose Huanglong for illuminated stalagmites and large underground chambers, with a river-boat segment in the traditional water-and-land circuit. It adds a different geological setting after the pillar landscape. Indoor views make it an alternative to poor mountain visibility, while stairs, wet surfaces and boat boarding still require care.

• Hours: Call 0744-5618489, listed by Hunan’s public tourism platform, for your date’s opening and last water-and-land entry before arranging the car. Keep the visit in the morning or early afternoon when the quoted window fits a 2–3-hour circuit; choose another outing if the entry or river segment is unavailable.
• Tickets: CNY 60 is government base admission only, excluding transport. Ask the same scenic contact or ticket desk for the full cave-and-river price, boat, commentary and any entrance vehicle inclusion. Pay for the named dated product after seeing that total and its refund terms.
• Time: 2–3 hours as a planning allowance, plus travel from Wulingyuan town.
• Address: 黄龙洞旅游区（景区入口）· 湖南省张家界市武陵源区索溪峪镇河口村, as listed by the provincial tourism department.
• Getting there: Use a taxi/car from the Wulingyuan hotel to 黄龙洞旅游区入口, rather than a general Forest Park pin. Arrange collection at the signed cave-tour exit; the pedestrian entrance and exit differ.
• How to visit: Entrance → signed cave walking circuit → operating underground-river boat segment → remaining chambers → signed exit. The official visitor description records this water-and-land sequence; use today’s staff-directed circuit when a segment changes.

5. Baofeng Lake · 宝峰湖

Choose Baofeng for a lake boat ride, green peak reflections and the entrance waterfall. It suits a slower additional Wulingyuan block. Eagle’s Nest (鹰窝寨) is a steep walking extension; leave it out when the boat and water views are the purpose.

• Hours: The scenic operator publishes seasonal service hours: April–October 07:00–18:00; other months 07:30–17:30. These leave the last boat departure unspecified. Call 0744-5616843 for the date’s entry and boat cutoff, then start early enough for the lake circuit and return pickup; omit it if the boat is suspended.
• Tickets: CNY 30 is government base admission only, excluding transport. Ask the operator or ticket desk for the full admission/boat/shuttle total and which pier transfers it covers. Buy the named dated product after seeing its total and refund terms; the boat experience requires more than admission alone.
• Time: 2–3 hours for the lake-focused visit and entrance waterfall, plus the town approach.
• Address: 宝峰湖景区（景区入口）· 湖南省张家界市武陵源区军地坪街道宝峰路3号, the operator’s published address. Navigate to the ticket entrance rather than a point on the water.
• Getting there: Take a town taxi to 宝峰湖景区入口. Arrange a return to your Wulingyuan hotel, or onward pickup for #4, at the signed road exit before starting the lake visit.
• How to visit: Entrance → waterfall/viewing area → staff-directed walk or included shuttle to the boat pier → operating lake circuit → same visitor exit. Omit the Eagle’s Nest climb for a lake-focused visit; the official description identifies its steep approach.

Day trips and onward extensions

Grand Canyon from Wulingyuan: #3 works as a separate out-and-back road outing with the return booked at the correct exit. Keep the Wulingyuan hotel; changing to Cili for one visit adds luggage work. #4 and #5 are shorter excursions from the same town base.

Fenghuang / 凤凰古城: treat it as an onward overnight stay when riverside old-town time is part of the trip. It requires a separate intercity journey and local station-to-town leg. For a short Zhangjiajie visit, use the extra block for the core landscape or weather flexibility instead of a long there-and-back. Other distant mountain or rafting areas deserve their own operating transport and safety plan.

Weather, walking and mobility

Spring and autumn are reasonable choices for walking, but a date cannot guarantee peak visibility. Carry layers, rain protection, grippy shoes, drinking water and food for a long park block. During public-holiday peaks, protect a morning entry and expect queues; use the dated holiday calendar before selecting travel days.

In fog, a short open valley visit or cave circuit can be more rewarding than another obscured panorama. Heavy rain, ice or wind can close paths and scenic vehicles; preserve the next hotel and onward departure when an operator warning removes a route.

Battery-powered wheelchair: the Forest Park’s 1 June notice prohibits battery-powered electric wheelchairs in cableway cabins, passenger lifts, eco-buses and similar enclosed transport. Gate staff offer backup manual chairs and temporary storage. Before validation, call 0744-5712345 about a suitable chair, companion assistance and storage; plan to retrieve it at that gate unless staff arrange otherwise. If the substitution or return fails, drop that transport-dependent route. This rule covers the park’s enclosed transport, rather than every outdoor trail; Tianmen must answer for its own devices and paths.

Meals between visits

Use Wulingyuan town or Yongding for a seated dinner after the park. Sanxiaguo (三下锅) is a local pot meal whose meats and offal vary by restaurant; ask about the contents before ordering. For a long high circuit, carry a simple lunch and water, leaving restaurant time flexible. If allergies or dietary restrictions matter, show the actual ingredients you must avoid and ask about shared preparation; use the dietary communication guide.

Protect the exit before the view

• Wrong gate or ticket session: stop before validation and show staff the issued booking plus your first two Chinese route nodes. Take a compatible open return route or change the booking under its terms; avoid crossing the whole park to rescue a mismatch.
• Cableway, elevator or scenic road closes: ask for the complete replacement route and return. Keep a lower open visit or postpone; leave exposed unofficial paths alone.
• Road pickup fails: remain at the staffed exit, contact the booked provider/hotel and arrange an authorised replacement. Keep baggage and stored mobility equipment linked to the pickup gate.
• Departure margin shrinks: cut the last attraction, collect bags and use the confirmed road transfer to the exact station or airport. Hold a city-side night ahead of an early departure.
