Xi’an Beilin Museum 西安碑林博物馆

Beilin’s old courtyards preserve the character of a place where inscriptions have been kept and studied for centuries. The north building, opened in May 2025, groups more material by subject. That makes this a different choice from Shaanxi History Museum, whose basic display gives a chronological regional history. The Xi’an city guide compares both museums with an old-city Wall day.

Use the normal-hours notice as the default: 09:00–18:30 and 17:00 last sale, with official WeChat, Alipay and website booking up to five days ahead. For visits only through 30 September 2026, the museum’s dated September extension instead gives 08:30–19:00 and a 17:30 ticket cutoff. From 1 October, use normal hours unless a newer date-specific museum notice changes them. Choose the actual date and entry period, complete the payment and keep the issued order or QR code.

Paid admission is required. The museum’s former price-notice link is unavailable; its 2025 fare and concession categories have been removed from current checkout advice. Read the full adult amount on the actual-date official order, and ask 029-87253331 if the checkout or passport field is unclear. Internal guiding is a separate service.

Passport boundary: the readable reservation notice describes mainland ID and QR entry; it contains no demonstrated foreign-passport checkout. If the official form rejects your document or payment, contact the museum at 029-87253331 before making Beilin the fixed visit. Ask whether a staffed desk can issue your date and how your original passport and order are validated. An issued official order is the admission evidence.

South / old-city approach: enter 西安碑林博物馆 · 三学街15号 from the Shuyuanmen side. The museum’s access notice names 永宁门 / Yongningmen Metro Line 2, Exit D2, with about 795 metres of walking. This is the natural choice after or before the Calligraphy Street and the Wall’s south side.

North / Bell Tower approach: the operator also lists 西安碑林博物馆北门 · 东木头市44号. Its route starts at 钟楼 / Bell Tower on Metro Lines 2/6, Exit F, and lists about 504 metres on foot. Use the gate named on your issued ticket and follow the museum’s current signs once inside. Both addresses enter one museum campus.

1. 孔庙古建筑群 / Confucian court: move through the pavilions, pool and gates to understand the scholarly setting that the old stele collection inhabits. Its buildings are part of the museum visit.
2. 碑林第一至七室 / old stele rooms: choose two or three inscriptions and compare script, scale and purpose. The operator specifically identifies the 唐开成石经 / Tang Stone Classics among the historic rooms; this is a useful anchor for seeing text made durable in stone.
3. 石刻艺术室 or 石刻艺术馆 / stone sculpture: if time remains, choose either Han and Tang carved forms in the art room or Buddhist figures in the art museum. The latter is organised around 众生祈愿 and 宝相千颜; the day’s gallery signs control access.

Keep this route when you want an old-city afternoon with Shuyuanmen and a Wall section. Ask for the current site map at the entrance; the operator lists rest areas, water and wheelchair borrowing. If step-free access is needed, ask staff for a suitable route through the old courtyards and new galleries.

The district’s 2025 museum tour identifies five north-building exhibitions that answer different questions. 星耀长安 concentrates on notable inscriptions; 汉字·书法·碑林 follows writing and the museum’s history; 骧腾百世 gives the Zhaoling Six Steeds their own context. 贞珉千年 uses Yu Youren and tomb epitaphs to tell a collecting story; 丝路石语 reads medieval inscriptions against Silk Road exchange. The 2025 tour supports these subjects and places the north building on the same campus; use the day’s signs for open galleries.

For a first visit, choose 汉字·书法·碑林 to make the old rooms more legible, then 骧腾百世 if carved figures interest you. Swap the second for 丝路石语 if you want trade and cross-cultural evidence. This editorial selection is flexible; gallery access and temporary displays follow the day’s signs.

After the old core, walk along 书院门 / Shuyuanmen to see brushes, paper and printed rubbings in the shopfronts. A shop rubbing is a reproduction; ask what a shop is actually selling. If you still have energy and an operating gate, continue toward 永宁门 / Yongning Gate for one Wall section. The city guide sets out the Wall ticket, entrance and shorter alternative. If the museum took longer than expected, keep the street walk and drop the Wall climb.

If no valid ticket or passport purchase route is available, do Shuyuanmen as a public street walk and decide separately whether the Wall gate is operating. If the gallery you wanted is closed, the old stele rooms remain the default; if old rooms are restricted, use one open north theme rather than claiming the entire museum has shut.
