Suzhou: gardens, canals and a two-night old-city base
Suzhou combines classical gardens with inhabited canal streets; its main museum and three most popular gardens have separate entry decisions. For a first visit, keep two hotel nights near the northeast old city and one full sightseeing day, protecting one reserved garden, the museum if a separate slot is issued, and a free street walk; three nights buy a western Tiger Hill/Lingering Garden period, while a water town costs another day.
Choose a subset of these eight city sights for each day. Tongli is outside the city list.
How long, and what goes together
Default: two nights, one old-city hotel, one complete sightseeing day. Use arrival or departure daylight for #3 or #7. Give the full day to #1 and either a separately booked #2 or the freely accessible #3; #5 replaces, rather than automatically follows, a long #1 visit. A late arrival leaves the free street for the evening and protects the next morning’s slot.
#1 → #2 → #3: allow an editorial 5–7 hours including nearby walks and a meal; the museum’s issued slot and the garden’s final entry set the order. #4 → #7: allow 3–4 hours; western geography makes the canal street a useful finish, but #4 needs its own booked entry. #6 → #7: allow 4–5 hours with Line 6 and a separate street approach; keep the hill exit before dusk. #5 → #3: allow 2½–3½ hours when you want a compact rockery and canal lanes instead of the larger #1.
With only one night, keep one booked garden and a street, skipping the museum if its timed slot strains the train. With three nights, add a separate west-side period for #4 or #6; the other can remain optional. A Tongli water-town day replaces a city period or requires another night and an independently secured return.
One old-city bed, three travel directions
Northeast core#1, #2, #5 and north #3 share a walkable decision area.
West city#4, #6, #7 and #8 need their own gate or road/metro legs.
Outside coreTongli needs a separate Wujiang transfer and a same-day return.
Use issued services for train and boat times.
Book ahead in the order that protects the stay
Name the actual train stations and exit. Use 12306 for the dated pair. 苏州站, 苏州北站, 苏州园区站 and 苏州新区站 are different arrivals; keep the reverse hotel-to-issued-station trip.
Secure the one garden you truly want. The March 2026 Garden Bureau answer requires online advance reservation for #1, #4 and #5 and names 苏州园林旅游 as the official platform. Use its verified WeChat account or current Bureau booking link for a visit-date ticket with your passport field. A 2024 city report documented passport buying and staffed help when self-service fails; establish the current product before treating the gate as assured.
Book #2 separately. The museum’s 2026 notice releases main-site slots seven days ahead including the booking day, via its site, official WeChat and “苏州博物馆全预约” mini-program. The museum accepts the original passport used for that reservation. If the form or inventory fails, use #3 as the complete free alternative.
Finish the bed and transfer. Get the hotel’s Chinese door, arrival time and answer for your actual passport before paying. Plan the station return before the last metro departure or arrange a licensed road pickup.
Where to stay: the northeast old-city base
Default near 北园路 / 拙政园苏博: the garden, museum, Lion Grove and north Pingjiang entrances sit in one compact decision area; the cost is a separate west-side ride for 留园 or 虎丘. Home Inn neo Suzhou Museum/Humble Administrator’s Garden Station · 如家·neo-苏州博物馆拙政园苏博地铁站店 lists 苏州市姑苏区北园路17号, about 400 m from Line 6 拙政园苏博站 Exit 3, and marks reception of foreign guests. That operator flag supports shortlisting; room inventory, passport registration and late-arrival access still require the property’s direct answer.
Guanqian alternative:voco Suzhou Guanqian Street at 苏州市姑苏区乔司空巷27–33号 places shops and meals around the Line 4 察院场 side; allow an editorial 5–10 minute walk to that station and a separate metro or road leg to the northeast garden gates. Choose it for an active evening base, then protect the garden transfer separately. Compare the actual booked room total and cancellation terms.
Getting to Suzhou and the hotel door
Search 12306 for the dated 上海虹桥 / 南京南 / 杭州东 → 苏州-area train that fits your wider route; select the exact departure hall, arrival station, fare and onward exit before treating it as a connection. The rail fare and elapsed train time belong to the issued service, while the local allowances below begin only on arrival.
苏州站 arrival: after the station exit, board Line 2 toward 骑河, change at 平河路 to Line 6 toward 桑田岛, leave 拙政园苏博站 Exit 1 for #1/#2 or Exit 3 for the named 北园路 hotel, then walk to its exact door. The April 2026 city guide maps the line change and Exit 1 for the sight cluster; the hotel operator gives Exit 3/400 m for its own door. Allow an editorial 35–55 minutes from train arrival through station exit, transfer, walk and room registration; congestion and luggage add time. The metro rule starts at CNY 2 for the first 6 km and prices longer journeys by distance; buy the station-pair fare shown by the live ticket machine/app, rather than treating a base fare as the complete cost. Licensed station taxi pickup is an alternative with a metered, trip-specific price.
苏州北站 arrival: the 2026 station guide lists Line 2 at 高铁苏州北站, distinct from 苏州站. Ride toward 平河路, change to Line 6 for 拙政园苏博, then make the hotel’s final walk. Allow an editorial 55–85 minutes including the longer Line 2 ride and room registration, plus the live distance fare or metered road price. A late train or construction-era access change may make the station’s licensed pickup more useful; the booking must still end at the Chinese hotel door.
WUX flight arrival: the city’s 2024 transport guide locates the Sunan Shuofang airport taxi pickup outside domestic arrivals Gate 6 and describes a road trip toward old Suzhou. Allow an editorial 60–90 minutes from landing through bags, licensed pickup, metered road and room registration; international-arrival door and current pickup must be established with the airport. A shuttle’s bus-terminal endpoint is still another hotel leg.
Other issued stations or flights: the 2026 city guide lists Lines 3/6 at 苏州新区站 and Lines 3/8 at 苏州园区站. From 新区, Line 6 toward 桑田岛 reaches 拙政园苏博 for the named north-old-city bed; from 园区, plan its distinct cross-city transfer or a licensed ride to the Chinese hotel door. For a Shanghai airport entry or exit, use the actual airport/rail station and a separately booked Shanghai–Suzhou rail leg; an early Shanghai flight earns a Shanghai last night unless the full Suzhou-hotel-to-airport chain has a safe buffer. Reverse the hotel walk, metro or licensed ride to the exact station on the onward ticket, leaving ticketing/security and luggage time beyond these editorial local-transfer allowances.
Getting around without losing the return
Walk the #1/#2/#5/#3 northeast cluster; garden and museum entrances remain separate. Line 6 connects the museum-garden stop with 虎丘站, while Line 2 山塘街站 Exit 1 serves #7 from 苏州站. #4 and #8 work more simply as named-gate licensed road rides from the old-city hotel. The distance fare starts at CNY 2 and is displayed for the chosen pair; last trains, ride pickup points and road restrictions belong to the travel date. Buy boats only after identifying their actual pier, endpoint and safe way back.
Sights in detail: eight city decisions
1. Humble Administrator’s Garden · 拙政园
Choose the broad water-garden core for one classic Suzhou garden. Its size earns a longer block than a quick photo stop.
Hours
The 2026 venue notice advances opening to 06:45 from 19 June through 7 October. The Garden Bureau schedule gives the usual 07:30 opening, with 17:30 close/17:00 final entry in March–October and 17:00 close/16:30 final entry in November–February; use the issued visit-date slot for exceptions.
Tickets
The published Bureau table lists CNY 80 in April, May and July–October, CNY 70 otherwise. The March 2026 Bureau interview still requires advance online booking here. The June venue notice calls for booking 1–7 days ahead and describes ID-card gate scanning for its early-opening period, while a 2024 city report described passport purchase and staffed help. Settle the live passport product and gate with the official garden channel before this visit; the issued ticket controls any discount.
Line 6 to 拙政园苏博站 Exit 1, then follow the signed garden pedestrian approach to 东北街178号; the April 2026 station guide maps the Suzhou Station transfer. The museum has a different entrance and reservation.
How to visit
Reserved garden gate → central waterside halls and bridges → an open east or west section → signed exit on 东北街 → #2 if its separate timed slot fits, otherwise #3.
2. Suzhou Museum main site · 苏州博物馆本馆
The building and collections explain the city beside its major gardens; the main site is distinct from the west museum.
Hours
Ordinarily Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–17:00, last entry 16:00 and Monday closed except statutory holidays (city tourism visitor page). The museum’s September 2026 notice extends only 25–27 September and 30 September–6 October to 20:00, last entry 19:00; the main site’s 忠王府 zone is excluded from that extension.
Booked main entrance → Pei-designed halls and open permanent galleries → signed museum exit by 忠王府 side → #3 canal lanes or #5. Keep the return walk and garden gate separate.
3. Pingjiang Road · 平江路
Walk the street-and-water grid after a booked interior, with time for lanes and food rather than a required cruise.
Hours
The public street is listed open all day; individual shops, galleries and boats operate their own hours. Severe weather can close the district.
From #1/#2 walk south from 东北街 into 平江路; or use Line 6 悬桥巷站 / Line 1 相门站 for the southern side (2026 city metro guide).
How to visit
东北街 entrance → canal-side street and one or two connecting lanes → 干将东路 southern end, or reverse toward the booked garden/museum. Turn back before an onward train rather than relying on a boat to finish the walk.
4. Lingering Garden · 留园
Choose its long connecting gallery, changing courtyards and Guanyun Peak when you want a second garden with a different spatial feel.
The Garden Bureau table lists CNY 55 peak / 45 off-peak in the stated months. The 2026 Bureau interview names 留园 among the three gardens needing advance online reservation; use the issued passport product and original document.
Use a licensed metered ride from the northeast old-city hotel to 留园路338号, or map a current metro/bus approach to the same garden gate. Save the return pickup before continuing west.
How to visit
Reserved gate → connected courts and long gallery → 冠云峰 rock display → signed garden exit → #7 or the prearranged ride to the hotel.
5. Lion Grove · 狮子林
Its large limestone rockery gives a tighter, more playful garden experience than #1’s broad water composition.
The Garden Bureau table lists CNY 40 peak / 30 off-peak. The 2026 Bureau interview keeps online advance reservation for 狮子林; use the correct passport document in the issued product.
Walk from #1 or #2 along the signed northeast-old-city approach to 园林路23号; Line 6 拙政园苏博站 is the useful rail approach, followed by a separate street walk.
How to visit
Booked garden gate → limestone rockery and open halls → signed exit to 园林路 → #2 or #3. Choose this instead of, rather than automatically after, a long #1 visit.
6. Tiger Hill Scenic Area · 虎丘山风景名胜区
Leave the tight old-city garden cluster for the hill, leaning pagoda and historic stone landscape when a second full visit period exists.
The Garden Bureau table lists CNY 70 peak / 60 off-peak. The March 2026 Bureau interview names #1, #4 and #5 as the three advance-booking gardens; buy Tiger Hill’s current gate product before this separate trip.
From 苏州站, Line 2 to 山塘街站 Exit 1, then walk to the canal street. From #4, use the mapped pedestrian route or a licensed ride; the full seven-li street is much longer than this short sample.
How to visit
Signed street entrance → canal bridges and an open lane segment → retrace to 山塘街站 or booked hotel pickup. A cruise ends at its own pier and cannot substitute for this planned station return.
8. Hanshan Temple · 寒山寺
Choose the poem-and-bell heritage when it matters more to you than another garden; its temple gate is distinct from the nearby free Fengqiao scenery.
Take a licensed metered ride from the old-city hotel to 寒山寺弄24号, then follow the signed temple gate. Agree the road pickup for the return.
How to visit
Temple entrance → main halls and bell area open to visitors → signed exit → nearby canal-side public view if time allows → named road return to the hotel or issued station.
Day trip: Tongli is another day, outside the city list
Choose 同里古镇 for a town-and-waterway day only when you have a spare city period or another night. It lies in Wujiang away from the Suzhou garden gates; the city account links the district to Metro Line 4, but the metro’s 同里站 still needs an onward ride to the old-town ticket entrance at 中川南路1号. The December 2025 city visitor entry lists 08:00–17:15 and CNY 100, a dated reference rather than a guaranteed future product. Allow one separate road/metro day, obtain the visit-date admission and actual station-to-town vehicle plus the reverse to the same Suzhou hotel. Wet-weather controls can close town or boat access; if the return or passport ticket is unresolved, keep #4/#6 in Suzhou instead. A boat is optional and needs its own pier and fare.
Food and weather that affect the choice
Use a garden-to-Pingjiang walk for a bowl of 苏式汤面; 松鼠鳜鱼 is a sit-down fish dish, so ask about bones, sauce, allergens and the actual restaurant price. The city cuisine guide identifies both; select the actual kitchen and its current price. Summer heat makes early garden entry and a midday museum useful. Heavy rain or typhoon warning can shut even normally open streets and boats: August 2026 city tourism closures affected 平江路, 山塘街 and garden nights. Move to an independently open indoor visit or protect the hotel and onward rail rather than treating “open all day” as a weather promise.
If a slot, weather or last leg fails
Garden passport purchase fails: use 苏州园林旅游’s named official channel and staffed venue help described by the city, then commit to #3/#7 street walks if no valid issued entry appears.
Museum slot or Monday fails: keep #1 and #3; book a future museum date only if the night count and return support it. Reserve the main site separately from the west site.
Rain or crowd control closes the street or garden: use an independently open museum or a meal near the hotel; preserve room registration and the reverse to the booked station.
Tongli return or Shanghai-airport transfer fails: cut the water town, or move the final bed to Shanghai before the early flight. A Tongli day trip also requires an issued way back.

The museum’s September notice controls only its listed holiday dates. Street hours, hotel location and metro topology have dated sources. Keep the issued ticket, original matching passport, Chinese gate and exact onward station in the actual plan.
