Shanxi: choose a heritage spine or a separate mountain and river trip
For a first six-night heritage journey, use Datong (2) → Taiyuan (2) → Pingyao (2). Cave art, Jinci and the old town each get a real base; the trade-off is leaving Mount Wutai and Hukou Waterfall for separate trips. With four nights, keep Datong and Pingyao and treat Taiyuan as a possible interchange. With two or three nights, choose one base.
These night counts are editorial planning allocations, assuming a usable arrival and a separately confirmed departure. A late flight, long station transfer or unavailable site admission can use a day. Change the nights or cut a stop before promising all three heritage bases.

Choose nights by the actual visits
The three options make different promises. Secure entry and exit first; travel between hotels takes a real block even when the rail leg looks short.
THREE BASES · 6 NIGHTS
Datong 大同 → Taiyuan 太原 → Pingyao 平遥
Why this route: Choose this route if you want three different forms of heritage: Datong's cave sculpture, Taiyuan's Jinci and museum choices, and Pingyao's intact townscape. The middle base earns its nights only if you plan a Taiyuan visit.
Datong 2 nightsKeep a full day for Yungang Grottoes and separate city time for Datong's historic buildings. Arrange the ride between your hotel and the grottoes.
Taiyuan 2 nightsChoose an actual Jinci day and a city or museum day. Taiyuan is more than a station change when those visits matter.

Move between bases: Book an entry into Datong and an exit from Pingyao or an onward ticket through another hub, or reverse the order. When to cut it: If Jinci and the Taiyuan museums rank below the two anchors, make Taiyuan a transfer interchange and give its nights to the two anchors. Use a separate Yungang day after a late arrival.
TWO ANCHORS · 4 NIGHTS
Datong 大同 → Pingyao 平遥
Why this route: Choose this when Yungang's Buddhist sculpture and Pingyao's urban heritage are the two reasons for going. Taiyuan remains a transfer unless its own sites earn a visit.

When to cut it: If four nights include a late first arrival and an early last departure, one anchor may be the more honest trip. Protect the full visit you care about most.
ONE BASE · 2–3 NIGHTS
Datong 大同 for caves, or Pingyao 平遥 for the old town
Why this route: A single base gives a short holiday one complete cultural visit instead of spending its middle day changing hotels.

Move between bases: Secure the entry and exit that serve the chosen base. A rail station named for a city can still be some distance from the hotel or site; arrange the last local leg.
When to cut it: If the one essential site's admission or arrival cannot be confirmed for your dates, change the dates or choose the other base before committing the hotel.
What each stop changes
Choose a site for its own purpose and arrange its local access. Give each city, mountain or attraction its own visit plan.
Boundary: Yungang is a separate site from the old city. Use its operator for the current ticket and entry gate, then arrange the return to Datong.
City and architecture base
Taiyuan and Jinci
Stop if Jinci, museum collections or a slower central-Shanxi break justify a second hotel.
Boundary: Jinci sits apart from the rail station and downtown hotels. Read its current visiting notice and arrange a local round trip.
Walled-town anchor
Pingyao
Stay for the historic street plan and former banking centre; consider Shuanglin and Zhenguo temples if you can arrange rides outside the walls.
Boundary: UNESCO lists the town and both temples together as heritage, but they are three separate physical visits. A Pingyao rail arrival still leaves separate transfers to those gates.
Separate mountain-temple journey
Mount Wutai
Choose this for a Buddhist mountain and monastery stay rather than trying to squeeze it between two city trains.
Boundary: Read current scenic-area notices for your travel date before choosing a temple-area base and permitted access to summit paths.
Yellow River branch
Hukou Waterfall
Add only when the river landscape is worth a separately planned southern leg, preferably with a nearby overnight and booked return.
Boundary: The waterfall has Shanxi and Shaanxi approaches. Decide which bank, operator and route you are using; high water or ice can affect access. It needs a separate southern transfer from Pingyao.
Fix the scarce visits and long moves before hotels
Yungang belongs to Datong but is a distinct visit. The UNESCO Pingyao property also includes Shuanglin and Zhenguo temples outside the walls. Before committing hotels, read current operator admission and hours for your chosen sites, plus the ride back. If a key date is unavailable, move the visit or remove that stop instead of assuming an on-site ticket.
Mountain access can change
Read the Mount Wutai scenic area's current notices for summit paths, approach roads and permitted local walking before choosing a temple-area stay. If the approach or intended walk is closed, keep an allowed temple plan only if it still answers your reason for going; otherwise postpone the mountain branch.
Hukou depends on bank and river conditions
The Shanxi-side operator warns of sudden floods and ice. Choose the Shanxi or Shaanxi bank before looking at a transfer, then read the current opening and arrange the return ride on that bank. Hukou needs its own southern travel block beyond a short Pingyao stay. If the chosen bank closes, keep a flexible southern night or omit the waterfall.
Sequence: choose the anchor and direction → secure entry and exit → search actual intercity station pairs → book essential site admission and read Wutai/Hukou notices where applicable → choose hotels near the bases you will really use → arrange each site ride and return. Keep a flexible night where a weather-dependent branch decides the trip.
Continue with the visits you chose
For each Shanxi city or attraction, use its operator for admission and arrange local access and return before fixing the onward night.
