Datong: caves, Liao-Jin halls and an old-city base
Yungang’s Northern Wei cave art lies west of the city; Huayan and Shanhua preserve Liao-Jin halls inside it. For a mixed first stay, use three Datong hotel nights and two full sightseeing days: protect one Yungang outing, walk the old city, and add Hunyuan’s Hanging Temple only as a separate road day with a Datong return.

Eight distinct city choices; use only a few in a short stay. The Hanging Temple is in Hunyuan and is an additional day trip, outside this count.
How long, and what goes together
Default: three nights in one old-city hotel. An arrival afternoon can hold #2 and an evening street walk when its gate is open. Give #1 a protected westward outing and return. Use the second full day either for the Hunyuan road trip or #3–8 inside and around the city. Return from Hunyuan to the same Datong bed; leave by the exact station or airport on the following morning.
#2 → #4 → #7: allow roughly 3–4 hours for a southwest-to-east old-city walk and three separate entrances; the memorial’s last admission controls the final stop. #3 → #5: allow 2–3 hours for the south-side temple and an open wall segment; high wind can close the ascent. #6 alone: allow a separate eastward road leg and 2–3 hours at the museum, rather than squeezing it between Huayan and a timed train.
With two nights, keep Yungang plus #2 and one nearby city stop; omit Hunyuan unless its actual admission, both road legs and the late onward departure have separate buffers. With one night, choose either Yungang or an unhurried old-city block. Mount Heng’s mountain paths and Yingxian Wooden Pagoda need additional transport and daylight, not an add-on after the cliff temple.

Book ahead in the order that protects the stay
Read the issued station or flight.12306 distinguishes 大同南站 and 大同站. Keep the hotel and a separate return-to-terminal allowance.
Reserve #1 Yungang. The Institute’s real-name calendar covers everyone and opens 15 days ahead, excluding the visit day; the notice names its website, official WeChat and 云冈石窟文旅 mini-program. The 2025 site holiday guide used channel 3 for passport holders, but the issued ticket and current gate decide entry. If the passport field fails, settle it with the operator before paying for the road leg.
Decide whether Hunyuan belongs in this stay. Buy a dated Datong→恒山游客中心 return seat or a licensed driver’s complete round trip, then distinguish scenic entry from the capped climb and its shuttle. From 2 October 2026 the operator-announced online foreign-visitor allocation changes; use the seller recognised for your visit date.
Book one old-city bed. Obtain the Chinese door and passport check-in terms before arrival. Put #6’s main-hall reservation and #2–4 tickets around their actual gate windows rather than treating all the old city as one product.
Where to stay: one old-city bed
Default around 清远街, 华严寺 and 鼓楼: it puts #2, #4 and #8 within an old-city walking choice and leaves the same door for the Yungang and Hunyuan returns. Cars may stop outside pedestrian streets; save the vehicle drop-off and final walk. Home Inn neo Datong Ancient City Huayan Temple · 如家·neo-大同古城华严寺店 lists 平城区清远街道云中路142号 by the west edge, about 700 m from the wall. The tradeoff is a walk into the core lanes; its foreign-guest label is a booking clue, so establish this room’s actual passport reception and staffed arrival before paying. A Datong South hotel fits a very late train or early departure, at the cost of every old-city leg.
Getting to Datong and the hotel door
大同南站: the transport bureau directs arriving passengers through the west-side passage to the comprehensive passenger centre. Its bus 61 corridor and the city’s English guide point toward old-city sights, but the current run must fit the arrival. With luggage, use the station’s licensed taxi/ride queue to 云中路142号 or the booked Chinese door, then the hotel’s signed entrance. Allow an editorial 45–75 minutes from train arrival through station exit, road and check-in, more in a holiday queue.
大同站: this is the conventional station, not a short label for 大同南站. Use the station’s licensed pickup to the same hotel; save the actual destination in Chinese and allow an editorial 30–60 minutes including exit and check-in. DAT 大同云冈国际机场: the city airport profile locates it east of Datong. Use a current airport vehicle or licensed taxi to the hotel door; allow an editorial 60–90 minutes from landing through bags, road and check-in. Neither a historic shuttle listing nor these allowances promise a present fare or departure.
Getting around without losing the return
Inside the walls, walk short adjacent legs. The 17 September 2026 fare order sets the inner loop at CNY 1 per ride and names 华严寺, 善化寺, 九龙壁, 和阳门 and 永泰门 stops. Read the direction before boarding. For #1 the 2025 South-station scenic shuttle is a route candidate; obtain current outward and return seats or a named licensed-car pickup. For Hunyuan, the June 2026 scenic-vehicle notice names 大同古城→恒山游客中心 and directs live times to 晋游宝. The centre-to-temple shuttle is another leg; county bus 901 does not deliver to the temple gate.
Sights in detail: enter, see, return
1. Yungang Grottoes · 云冈石窟
This is Datong’s strongest first-visit reason: imperial-era Buddhist cave sculpture, including the Tanyao Five Caves and the open-air Buddha at Cave 20.
The April 2026 city notice gives CNY 120 full fare. The Institute requires every visitor, including concession holders, to reserve under real identity 15 days ahead excluding the visit day; it names the Institute site, official WeChat and 云冈石窟文旅 mini-program for current information. A 2025 site-issued holiday guide directed international visitors with passports to channel 3 after reservation. Confirm the issued passport product and visit-date gate with the Institute before the westward road trip.

Getting there
From the old-city hotel, buy a dated outbound and return seat in the city scenic-vehicle channel or use a licensed car with a named cave-exit pickup. The 2025 city notice describes a 大同南站→云冈石窟 bus, but its old frequency is a dated service rather than a current timetable.
How to visit
Signed visitor entry → open cave route → Caves 16–20 and Cave 20 if accessible → interpretation area → signed exit → booked return to the same Datong hotel. A single closed cave does not close the whole site.

2. Huayan Temple · 华严寺
Give the Great Buddha Hall and Bhagavan Hall the longest old-city interior block; their scale and surviving sculptures differ from a short wall stop.
Hours
Use the venue’s visit-date gate notice. The April 2026 seasonal notice changes the price but does not give today’s last admission.
Tickets
CNY 50 full from 1 April 2026 peak-season switch. Buy this separate temple admission through its current official gate/channel; the document and any concession must match the selected product.

Getting there
Walk from a Qingyuan Street/Drum Tower hotel toward the southwest old city; the official CNY 1 inner loop also names 华严寺. Approach its signed visitor gate rather than a side hall door.
How to visit
Signed entrance → 大雄宝殿 → 薄伽教藏殿 and open halls → signed exit → old-city meal or #8. Keep #3 for another open slot if the first interior runs long.

3. Shanhua Temple · 善化寺
Its main-gate-to-hall axis rewards a second temple stop when architecture, rather than a performance, is the reason for Datong.
Hours
The city’s venue account establishes the site and halls; use the current temple gate for its day-specific closing time before pairing with #2.
Tickets
The April 2026 city notice keeps the full fare at CNY 40. This is separate from Huayan and the public connecting streets; old free-entry advice is superseded.
From #2 or #4 walk through the old city if time allows, or use the inner loop’s 善化寺 stop; the bus is useful when the west-to-south walk is too much.
How to visit
Main visitor gate → 山门 and 三圣殿 → open main hall → signed exit → old-city hotel. Put it after Yungang only when the dated return leaves an unhurried entry window.
4. Nine-Dragon Wall · 九龙壁
The Ming screen wall is a compact contrast to the monasteries and explains the former princely axis without buying a full palace show.
Hours
The city site profile identifies the wall; use its current ticket gate for that day’s indoor court hours.
Tickets
The Cultural Relics Bureau notice restored a CNY 10 full ticket from 15 July 2025. The exterior streets are public; the paid wall court is a separate admission.
Walk east from the Four-Archway crossing or use the old-city scenic line’s 九龙壁 stop; use the entrance facing the screen-wall court.
How to visit
Signed court entrance → glazed wall and interpretation → signed exit → #7 near 和阳门 or the old-city hotel. This short stop should never displace the Yungang block.
5. Datong Ancient City Wall · 大同古城墙
Walk an open wall segment to see the street grid and gate relationship after the temples; it is a distinct city-scale view.
Hours
Wall access and weather closures follow the operator’s current gate notice; high wind has caused temporary closure. Use a daylight open segment rather than assuming an evening ascent.
Tickets
The city’s July 2026 report says the whole wall was free to enter then. Events or enclosed exhibits can have separate products; ordinary streets below remain open if the ascent closes.
Time
45–90 min on an open segment (editorial allowance)
Walk to the south gate from #3, or ride the CNY 1 inner loop to 永泰东门; follow signs to the open ascent rather than a closed ramp.
How to visit
Signed open gate → one manageable wall section and city view → signed descent → hotel. When wind closes the walkway, use the street-side wall and #7 or #8 instead.
6. Datong Museum · 大同市博物馆
Its regional collections make the cave and temple eras legible; choose it for a slower indoor history block, as a separate stop east of the walls.
The city’s public-museum programme describes free entry. A Cultural Relics Bureau notice retains reservations for the main hall while branches have no general booking. Choose the current official museum slot and document field before the cross-city ride; passport acceptance at this gate is not established.
Time
2–3 h plus a separate road leg (editorial allowance)
Use a licensed car from the old-city hotel to 太和路506号 and save the return; this museum is east of the old-city walking cluster. The museum line 0352-2303518 can resolve the entry desk before departure.
How to visit
Booked main-hall entry → Northern Wei and regional history displays → one current special gallery if open → signed exit → same Datong hotel. A Monday closure makes #5/#7 better city choices.
7. Liang Sicheng Memorial Hall · 梁思成纪念馆
This is a focused architecture stop beside the old wall, useful after seeing actual Liao and Ming fabric rather than a third general history gallery.
The city public-museum programme describes free branches, and the museum-group notice removed general reservation for this branch. A special event can alter the desk; the original document remains the safe identity to carry.
After #4, walk toward 和阳门 and descend by the signed north sunken courtyard; from a hotel use the loop’s 和阳门北 stop.
How to visit
Signed sunken-courtyard entrance → architecture/conservation display → same courtyard exit → old-city dinner or #5 street-side wall.
8. Liao-Jin-Yuan Ethnic Integration Museum · 辽金元民族融合博物馆
Use this compact branch to connect Huayan’s architecture with the city’s Liao, Jin and Yuan people and objects when the main museum’s eastward ride is too long.
Walk from the Huayan/清远街 hotel to 清远街95号, or use the loop’s 清远门 stop and follow the numbered street to the entrance.
How to visit
Signed museum entrance → Liao-Jin-Yuan cultural display → same entrance exit → #2 if its ticket and open window remain workable.
Day trip: Hanging Temple in Hunyuan, outside the city list
Default decision: add 悬空寺 only with a complete old-city hotel→恒山游客中心→scenic shuttle→temple→visitor centre→Datong hotel chain. The April 2026 city notice lists CNY 15 full scenic entry plus CNY 100 climbing admission; the Hengshan operator makes the visitor-centre shuttle a separate leg. The ground view does not include the exposed gallery climb. Allow one separate road day and return to the Datong bed before an onward morning.
For a visit on 1 October 2026: the 1 June Hengshan notice directs passport holders unable to use facial verification to the ticket window; confirm the actual date’s stock before the road trip. For visits on or after 2 October 2026: the operator’s newer 24 September announcement instead allocates 100 online climbing tickets shared by foreign visitors and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan visitors through Trip.com. Its separate 475 same-day offline tickets exclude foreign visitors; Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan compatriots are among the listed special groups eligible for that offline stock, subject to availability and the operator’s document rules. Do not use the June window instruction as a foreign-visitor fallback for a visit on or after 2 October. The announcement does not prove that a particular passport purchase will succeed. The operator advises against climbing for people affected by height, narrow stairs or specified health conditions. A ground visit or a city day remains useful when climb inventory or personal fit fails.
Book both legs of a dated 晋游宝 city–visitor-centre seat or agree a licensed driver at the named Datong hotel, the centre and the return pickup. Bus 901 reaches Hunyuan county, requiring a further centre leg and its own return; do not treat it as a temple-door service. If the last safe vehicle is missing, keep #3–8 and the same Datong night instead of building the trip around a one-way ride.
Food and season that change the route
Try 刀削面 or 烧麦 around the old-city base after temple hours, or 浑源凉粉 only when the protected Hunyuan return leaves time. The city food account names these as local dishes; ask about meat, wheat, sesame and chilli where relevant. Carry a layer and water for the open cave paths. Wind, snow and ice can change the wall, Hengshan shuttle or road; the wall’s June 2026 closure account shows why its ascent is a weather-dependent choice.
If a booking, gate or road fails
Yungang passport or slot fails: move #2 and the museum/old-city block forward while the Institute channel resolves the ticket; do not travel west for an unissued entry.
A named cave or temple hall closes: follow the signed open route and use #6 or #8 for the missing interpretation; keep the city return.
Hunyuan climb or return fails: use ground entry only if its ticket and shuttle both work; otherwise keep a Datong city day and the hotel. Never substitute a county-bound 901 arrival for a protected temple-to-Datong return.
Weather closes the wall: use its street-side view and #7’s gallery if open.
Onward terminal differs: reread 大同南站, 大同站 or DAT on the issued ticket and reset the hotel-to-terminal vehicle before departure.
Sources and verification boundary
Venue and transport sources reviewed . City notices give 2026 peak fares, museum addresses/hours, the CNY 1 inner loop and a free-wall report; they do not quote today’s museum inventory, attraction last checks or scenic-vehicle departures. The Yungang reservation is real-name but foreign-passport checkout is untested. The Hengshan notices were rechecked 28 September 2026. The new allocation applies only to visits on or after 2 October; a 1 October visit uses the earlier dated instruction. Obtain the actual product and a complete return to your Datong hotel for your date. Use the trip planner for a separately booked next city.
