Guangxi: choose the river, terraces, island or border-side waterfall
For a first four-night landscape stay, start with Guilin (2) → Yangshuo (2). It gives the long Li River move and two countryside nights; the trade-off is leaving the coast, terraces and border-side waterfall for another trip. Choose one Longji village instead when terraces matter more than Yangshuo. Choose Beihai–Weizhou for an island stay, or Nanning–Detian for a separately arranged road trip.
These are editorial night allocations with a usable arrival and booked exit; choose one branch rather than a loop across Guangxi. Before choosing Detian: the NIA's December 2024 Guangxi list for 240-hour transit omits Chongzuo, where the waterfall sits. Later port and nationality updates do not expressly add it. Confirm your current permitted area with NIA 12367 or the entry port; without that confirmation, remove Detian or use another valid entry basis before booking.
Choose one Guangxi branch
Each branch has a different way in, a different way out and one condition that can undo it. The four branches below are alternatives; choose one for a short stay.
RIVER + COUNTRYSIDE · 4–5 NIGHTS
Guilin 桂林 → Yangshuo 阳朔
First landscape visit: use Guilin for the city and long Li River departure, then sleep in Yangshuo for countryside time. Arrive through a booked Guilin gateway; leave from Yangshuo with a booked onward ticket, otherwise return to Guilin. Hard stop: Use the operator's dated long-cruise sailing and ticketed pier before treating the boat as the hotel transfer. If water closes it, use a dated road or rail move if Yangshuo still earns two nights.

Hard stop: Pick Ping’an, Jinkeng/Dazhai or Ancient Zhuang Village and ask for its road, last leg and current field stage. Rain or an unsuitable crop stage makes a Guilin day the fallback.
Choose this for a coast and volcanic-island stay instead of northern karst. Enter through Beihai, cross from Beihai International Passenger Port, and sleep on the mainland again before a fixed rail or flight exit.
Hard stop: Book outward and return ferries for the travel dates, and arrange island admission before paying for island lodging. A mainland buffer night cannot absorb a multi-day return closure.
Choose a Nanning city stay and a southwest road visit when the waterfall matters more than the river or island. Enter and leave on booked Nanning tickets; one night near Daxin protects the long outward and return road legs.

To join northern and southern branches, reserve a separate transfer block and search your exact rail stations on 12306. Nanning can remain a rail interchange between Guilin and Beihai; add city nights only when its sights matter.

Each plan has a different gateway and failure point. Book the hotel chain after the relevant boat, road branch and exit work on your dates.
RIVER + COUNTRYSIDE · 4–5 NIGHTS
Guilin 桂林 → Yangshuo 阳朔
Why this route: Choose this when the Li River and limestone scenery are the main reason to visit Guangxi. The long cruise moves from a Guilin-area pier to Yangshuo. A short Xingping boat or Yulong raft has different start and end points.
Guilin 2 nightsUse one city day and decide whether the one-way Li River cruise is worth a dedicated travel day.
Yangshuo 2 nightsStay for a Yulong countryside day or a separate Xingping visit instead of returning immediately after the cruise.

Gateway, move and exit: The operator names Mopanshan (磨盘山) or Zhujiang (竹江) as the long-cruise departure and Yangshuo as its end; read the issued ticket's exact pier, landing and luggage terms; arrange the hotel transfer. For rail, distinguish Yangshuo station near Xingping from Yangshuo town, then search the specific onward train on 12306. An early Guilin exit needs an arranged return and usually the optional last Guilin night.
When to cut it: If the cruise is suspended by water conditions, keep a road or rail move to Yangshuo only if its local countryside time still earns two nights. With fewer than four usable nights, choose Guilin or Yangshuo as one base.
TERRACE PRIORITY · 4 NIGHTS
Guilin 桂林 → one Longji 龙脊 village → Guilin
Why this route: Choose this over Yangshuo when village walking, viewpoints and a particular terrace crop stage matter more than two days beside the river. Longji uses a northern road branch, separate from the Guilin–Yangshuo boat.

Gateway, move and exit: Ask the lodging or scenic operator which entrance, parking area and last road leg serve your selected village, and arrange the return before the onward train or flight. If you later add the one-way Li River cruise, arrange a Yangshuo-to-Guilin return; four nights still leave the full Yangshuo stay for another trip.
When to cut it: If rain restricts the road or the crop stage you came for has changed, keep the Guilin nights and choose a city or river day. A same-day Longji outing is reasonable only for one area with an arranged round trip.
MAINLAND + ISLAND · 4 NIGHTS
Beihai 北海 → Weizhou Island 涠洲岛 → Beihai
Why this route: Choose this for a coast and volcanic-island holiday. Beihai's mainland shore remains visitable without a ferry; Weizhou depends on both an outward and a return boat.

Gateway, move and exit: Depart from Beihai International Passenger Port. Read the operator's date-specific sailing announcements and obtain both boat tickets and island admission before paying for island lodging. Book the onward train or Beihai Fucheng flight separately.
When to cut it: If the outward boat stops, stay on the mainland and rebook only when both directions work. If the return is stopped, contact the operator and change the onward ticket and mainland hotel; one buffer night cannot guarantee an exit after prolonged disruption.
CITY + WATERFALL · 3–4 NIGHTS
Nanning 南宁 → Daxin/Detian 大新/德天 → Nanning
Why this route: Choose this when the border-side waterfall and a Nanning city stay interest you more than a river cruise or island ferry. The waterfall is in Daxin County, Chongzuo, rather than in Nanning's urban area.
Nanning 1–2 nightsUse the city for Qingxiu Mountain, the Guangxi Museum of Nationalities or Three Streets and Two Lanes if they merit a city stay beyond a station change.
Daxin/Detian area 1 nightSleep near the southwest road branch when the waterfall visit and a less rushed return matter.
Nanning 1 exit nightReturn before a fixed onward connection, or replace this night when an onward ticket from another city is booked.
Gateway, move and exit: The scenic operator lists a Detian tourist coach from Nanning East coach station after the rail station's metro connection. Ask the coach operator for the dated departure, ticket, scenic-area drop-off and return before treating it as a day trip; otherwise arrange a road transfer and an overnight.
When to cut it: If a weather closure or a missing return coach removes the visit, keep Nanning as a city stay or change the date. A China-side waterfall visit grants no Vietnam entry; that crossing has separate controls.
Gateways and return legs
Choose the actual pier, station, road pickup or coach terminal before fixing a hotel chain. An arrival in the same city as a scenic area still leaves a final transfer.
Guilin → Yangshuo, with an exit plan
Start at your Guilin hotel and reach the ticketed Mopanshan (磨盘山) or Zhujiang (竹江) cruise pier; the river operator's transport page names road services to both, but their departure times come from the dated operator notice. The long cruise ends in Yangshuo; use the ticketed landing and the ride to your Yangshuo hotel. If your ticket home leaves Guilin, arrange a Yangshuo → Guilin road return or book the rail ticket and a final Guilin night when the departure is early. Yangshuo rail station near Xingping needs a separate ride to Yangshuo town.
Guilin ⇄ one Longji village
Use Guilin as the road origin, then choose Ping'an (平安), Jinkeng/Dazhai (金坑/大寨) or Ancient Zhuang Village (龙脊古壮寨) before booking a vehicle. Arrange that village's entrance, parking or drop-off, guesthouse last leg and the return pickup to Guilin. A road closure or a missing last ride means keep the night in Guilin; keep the northern village and southbound river cruise as separate routes.
Beihai ⇄ Weizhou, then onward
Go from the Beihai mainland base to Beihai International Passenger Port (北海国际客运港), take the booked outward ferry to Weizhou and arrange the island pier-to-hotel leg. Hold a dated return ferry to the mainland port; only after that return should the Beihai station or Beihai Fucheng Airport departure be treated as usable. A stopped return boat changes that onward booking, so keep the mainland night and a changeable exit.
Nanning ⇄ Detian, on a valid entry basis
The scenic operator separates Nanning East rail station (南宁东站), the metro transfer to Nanning East coach station (南宁东客运站), and the tourist coach toward Detian. Ask for the actual dated coach, its scenic-area drop-off and its return or arrange a prebooked road vehicle and a Daxin night. Do not use this branch on a 240-hour transit permission unless NIA or the entry port confirms Chongzuo is within your permitted area; China-side waterfall access is also separate from any Vietnam entry.
This is a province-level choice. The particular city walk, raft reach, village trail, ferry purchase and waterfall gate each need their own date-specific detail.
Northern gateway and city
Guilin
Choose it for city sights and as the starting base for the long Li River cruise or a Longji road trip.
Boundary: The airport, four rail stations, cruise piers and city hotels are different points; the cruise departs from a separate pier outside the city centre.
Karst countryside base
Yangshuo and Xingping
Stay for Yulong countryside or Xingping river scenery after the Guilin arrival or one-way cruise.
Boundary: Yangshuo town, Xingping and Yangshuo rail station are separate stops. Local raft reaches and the long Guilin cruise have different operators and endpoints.
Northern village branch
Longji Rice Terraces
Choose a village overnight when terrace walking and a specific field stage are the priority.
Boundary: Ping’an, Jinkeng/Dazhai and Ancient Zhuang Village require an exact area and final road or walking leg; the visual stage changes with season and weather.
City and southwest gateway
Nanning
Give it a city night for Qingxiu Mountain, museums or older streets, or use its East station and coach terminal for a planned Detian road trip.
Boundary: An arrival at Nanning East leaves a metro-to-coach terminal transfer and a dated departure to arrange.
Border-side road branch
Detian Waterfall
Use the China-side scenic visit when the waterfall and Daxin landscape earn the long road journey.
Boundary: Operator admission, coach return, weather access and any optional cross-border product need separate operator decisions. A China-side ticket alone grants no Vietnam entry.
Coast with a ferry decision
Beihai and Weizhou Island
Stay in Beihai for a mainland coast visit; add Weizhou only when two sailings and island lodging fit your dates.
Boundary: A mainland hotel is a fallback if no outward boat sails. Once on the island, a stopped return boat can force a changed departure.
Optional food and museum city
Liuzhou
Give it a night if luosifen and the Industrial Museum matter enough to replace another stop.
Boundary: It is not a required transfer on any of the four sample routes; search rail direction and read museum access before adding it.
Set the moving parts before paying for the route
River water and terrace fields are two different date decisions
The Li River operator's notices control the long cruise; get its actual pier, sailing and Yangshuo landing before using the boat as a hotel transfer. Longji's operator describes seasonal crop and road controls; ask for the exact village and field stage, and keep a Guilin day if rain closes the road. A green or golden photo from another date cannot establish the actual field stage or boat operation.
Weizhou needs an outward and return boat
The Guangxi tourism department identifies Beihai International Passenger Port and the operator booking route. In August 2026 the ferry operator suspended both directions for two days because of weather. Read live sailings before each crossing, keep the last night on the mainland before a fixed departure, and be ready to move flights or hotels if a closure lasts longer than that buffer.
Detian needs a dated coach, entry and China-side plan
The scenic operator lists a route from Nanning East coach station, with departures set by the station. Ask for the actual bus out and back, admission inventory and road access. A May 2026 operator notice shows weather can close the site. If the road return fails or the park closes, use the Nanning city time or move the waterfall date; book the return separately before using it as an exit.
Establish the entry basis before Detian or a border crossing
The NIA's December 2024 list names 12 Guangxi cities for 240-hour visa-free transit and omits Chongzuo, which contains Detian. A November 2025 update added entry ports; the August 2026 policy expanded eligible nationalities and lists 65 ports. The text of those updates does not expressly add Chongzuo; confirm the current permitted area for your passport and itinerary with NIA 12367 or the border inspection authority at your intended port before booking. Without confirmation, use another valid entry basis or remove Detian. A China-side waterfall visit also differs from entering Vietnam: the cross-border zone has separately controlled group routes. Ask its operator and both countries' border authorities about your documents, route and re-entry before booking a crossing. The four sample routes stay on the China side.
Sequence: choose one landscape and gateway → search entry/exit tickets and the branch operator's pier, boat or coach and return → book the legs that work together → place the weather-sensitive visit before a flexible night → book bases at the actual access points → read current conditions before travel. Keep the mainland Beihai night and a separate Detian road block where those branches decide the trip.
