Guilin travel guide: city sights, Li River and where to stay
Guilin is a river city with accessible karst hills, historic streets and lakes. For a first visit, give the centre one full sightseeing day, then use a separate day for a one-way Li River cruise to Yangshuo; two Guilin nights plus two Yangshuo nights work when you leave from Yangshuo, while an early KWL or Guilin-station departure calls for a final Guilin night.
These eight choices are within Guilin city or its near-city edge. Choose a hill, cave or history stop by interest; the Yangshuo-bound boat, countryside and Longji need separate travel blocks.
Must-see for a mixed first visit

These times are editorial sightseeing allowances. The same-number entries below carry each place's gate, ticket and source boundary.
How long, and what goes together
One full Guilin city sightseeing day covers the arch, central lakes and one paid choice. Give Yangshuo another full countryside day after the river transfer. Four nights can be two in central Guilin and two in Yangshuo when the onward journey starts there; add a Guilin positioning night before an early KWL flight or Guilin-city train. With only two nights, keep the city and choose either a dated cruise or a road-based Yangshuo taste; a full countryside day falls away.
#1 → #2 · 3–4 hours: leave Elephant Hill for adjacent lake paths and a central meal; the free hill still needs its timed slot, and a night boat is optional.
#3 → #8 · 3–4 hours: the Ming precinct and food lanes share the old centre; the paid 王城 gate finishes before the street evening.
#6 → #7 · 3–4 hours: two northern hills share a riverfront corridor; choose one climb if heat, rain or the 仙鹤峰 restriction reduces safe access.
#4 → #2 · 4–5 hours plus crossing: use a daylight east-bank park block before a central lake evening; 七星岩 cave closes before the park.
If the city block shrinks, protect #1 → #2 and drop an extra paid hill or the northwest cave. A full Guilin-to-Yangshuo sailing takes the daylight travel block and does not fit inside these combinations.

Book ahead in the order that protects the trip
Fix the onward exit and final bed. Distinguish KWL, 桂林站, 桂林北站, 桂林西站 and 阳朔站. An early Guilin departure normally needs a Guilin bed, even after Yangshuo.
Choose the exact Li River product. The operator pairs three-star boats with 磨盘山客运港, four-star with 竹江客运港, and both with 阳朔龙头山码头. Its route advice gives roughly four hours afloat, one way, and recommends advance purchase in busy periods. Use the official “漓江售票处” WeChat service account or a named seller for a dated vessel, pier, price and refund rule. The 15-day release was announced specifically for the 2026 October holiday.
Resolve passenger documents and bags before payment. The operator requires a real-name ticket/person/original-document match at boarding and says this one-way boat has no luggage-storage service. Obtain the seller’s foreign-passport entry route for every passenger, plus a hotel-change or separate road-luggage plan.
Reserve the city gate that can fail. Elephant Hill’s 2025 notice restored free real-name timed admission. Buy only the needed dated Wangcheng, Seven Star cave or Reed Flute Cave product after its gate and document fields are clear. A city night boat, Yulong raft and Longji cableway are distinct add-ons.
Read the Li River notice index before travel: water levels can change the sailing while a road transfer to Yangshuo remains possible.
Where to stay: choose the base, then its door
Default Guilin bed: central Xiufeng or the Elephant Hill–Zhengyang side (秀峰区 / 象鼻山–正阳步行街). This groups #1–#3 and #8 and simplifies the cruise-port pickup. The tradeoff is street noise and often higher riverfront room prices. Sheraton Guilin Hotel (桂林喜来登饭店) at 滨江路15号 is a riverfront location example; Holiday Inn Express Guilin City Center (桂林中心智选假日酒店) at 依仁路30号 is an inland central-street example. Compare a dated room, staffed passport check-in and morning pickup from the exact door.
桂林站 side suits an early city train or airport shuttle but adds a walk or ride to the lakes. 临桂 / airport side is a departure base with a longer city or river-pier journey. For Yangshuo, 阳朔县城 / West Street supports food and coaches; 遇龙河 villages buy quieter mornings at the cost of named car pickups. 兴坪 makes sense when its Li River bend and 阳朔站 matter more than Yulong countryside. Getting to Guilin and the hotel door
KWL / 桂林两江国际机场: the airport operator’s city-bus page puts the ticket desk beside T2 arrivals door 6 and boarding outside it. Its planned CNY 20 route serves a 桂林站-area stop, 民航大厦, the 象山 / 中心广场–东西巷 area and 七星公园. Choose the stop nearest your booked Chinese address, then complete the walk or licensed-car last leg. As an editorial allowance, give the arrivals-door-to-central-hotel trip roughly 60–90 minutes by bus including waiting and the last leg; the airport lists roughly 40–60 minutes to earlier city stops. The day’s official ticketing system controls departures and fare. Use the signed taxi rank or confirmed hotel pickup when a late bus would leave an awkward final leg.
Rail: 桂林站 serves the central city; 桂林北站 and 桂林西站 need a city transfer, and 阳朔站 lies on the Xingping side of Yangshuo. At the issued station, leave by its signed taxi or bus area and navigate to the hotel’s Chinese entrance. Reverse the full chain to the exact Chinese station on your next ticket. Direct KWL ↔ Yangshuo: the airport operator’s intercity page names 阳朔县汽车客运服务站 (阳朔镇千古情大道2号) as the direct coach end, with a planned 90-minute vehicle ride and CNY 60 product at research time. Add village-to-depot travel and airport processing. The planned first 07:30 coach serves later flights; use a final Guilin bed for an early flight or city-station train.
Getting around Guilin
Walk #1–#3 and #8 from a central hotel, cross the Li for the east-bank #4, and make #5 a separate northwest ride. #6 and #7 form a northern riverfront pair. Each Chinese entrance below is more useful than a wide scenic-area map pin.
For the Yangshuo-bound boat, the Li River operator transport page lists limited morning custom buses from city stops to 竹江 or 磨盘山, and 竹江 bus 9. Obtain the dated vehicle and port match before relying on a seat; a licensed car to the named port is the fallback. At 阳朔龙头山码头, the operator lists 803/808, followed by a walk or car to the booked bed. Neither road leg is bundled with the boat.
Guilin sights in detail
The same numbers lead from the priority list to six decision fields. “Time” is an editorial allowance; a dated ticket or operator notice settles a future opening and fare.
1. Elephant Trunk Hill · 象鼻山
The river arch makes the Li–Taohua confluence legible. Choose it before paying for another hill on a short city stay.

Walk or ride to 象山公园1号门 on 民主路; use 三号门 for an evening slot. 二号门 is normally an exit.
How to visit
Booked Gate 1 or 3 → 水月洞 and riverside arch → signed exit toward the central lakes.

2. Two Rivers and Four Lakes shore · 两江四湖
A central evening walk shows Guilin's water setting; the optional urban boat is different from the Yangshuo-bound cruise.
Hours
Public lake paths are the walking choice. Individual interiors and boats use separate hours; the operator's May 2026 notice closed the Sun and Moon Twin Pagoda interiors for renovation. Operator hours / notice ↗

Walk from 正阳步行街 to 杉湖北路1号 and continue west to 榕湖. A boat uses the pier on the issued ticket.
How to visit
杉湖日月湾 shore → 榕湖 bridges and 古南门 → central hotel; view pagodas from shore while interiors are closed.
3. Jingjiang Princes' City and Solitary Beauty Peak · 独秀峰·王城
The former palace precinct gives Guilin a substantial history stop; add the peak only if steps and heat suit you.

Walk from 东西巷 toward 王城路1号 and follow the staffed ticket gate rather than a campus map pin.

Ticketed front gate → 王城 precinct and history rooms → optional 独秀峰 climb → signed exit toward 东西巷.
4. Seven Star Scenic Area · 七星景区
Choose the east-bank park for a wider walking landscape; 七星岩 adds an indoor branch when interest and time allow.

Cross the Li from the centre and ride to 七星路1号, then walk to the staffed park gate.

七星路 gate → 花桥 and 七星山 paths → optional ticketed 七星岩 before its cutoff → signed park exit.
5. Reed Flute Cave · 芦笛岩
This is a distinct underground formation visit and a possible wet-weather choice, but it needs its own return ride.
Hours
Call the 芦笛岩 desk at 0773-2210889 for that day's first and last cave tours before making the northwest ride.
Tickets
Buy the dated cave ticket at its desk or a named seller after asking the price, passport field and whether any uphill vehicle is extra. A platform fare is not an operator fare.

Walk north along 滨江路 from the centre or ride to the operator's 滨江路27号 service point.

Staffed Fubo gate → river-facing hill and 还珠洞 if open → 滨江路 exit; use above-ground paths if the cave closes.
7. Diecai Hill · 叠彩山
Choose the higher city view when a climb is worth the effort; avoid the restricted 仙鹤峰 cave area.

Enter from 解放东路 → follow the short east and west lanes → leave via 正阳步行街 or return toward 王城路.
Day trips and onward travel from Guilin
The long Li River boat changes your base. Yangshuo countryside and Longji need their own daylight and return decisions. All three sit outside the eight numbered city entries.
One-way Li River to Yangshuo · 漓江精华游
The scenic operator describes roughly 60 km and four hours afloat. The highlight boat starts at the named Guilin-area pier, passes the karst reach around 九马画山 and 兴坪, and finishes at 阳朔龙头山码头. Give this the full daylight travel block: central hotel → dated vehicle to 磨盘山 or 竹江 → real-name document check → sailing → 龙头山 exit → 803/808 or licensed car → booked Yangshuo bed. The fare covers the boat; the operator lists both road legs separately and provides no boat luggage storage.

When sleeping again in Guilin, secure a separate same-day road return from Yangshuo and its final hotel leg before buying the cruise. A short Xingping river product and a Yangdi raft cover different reaches and endpoints. If the long sailing closes, the road to Yangshuo may still operate; use the route-specific operator notice and keep the countryside block by road where safe.
Yangshuo countryside and Xingping · 阳朔 / 遇龙河 / 兴坪
After the river arrival, sleep in 阳朔县城 for food and coach access, or use a prearranged car to a 遇龙河 village for quieter mornings. Give the countryside a separate full day. Choose one operator-listed Yulong raft section, such as 骥马 → 工农桥, with pickup at its different end; a riverside walk or suitable cycle works when the raft is full or weather changes. Xingping’s bend and 阳朔站 lie in another direction. Reserve a Xingping-side final transfer if the next train leaves from 阳朔站.
Longji north of Guilin · 龙脊梯田
Longji sits north of Guilin, away from the Yangshuo-bound river. The operator separates 平安壮族梯田, 金坑·大寨红瑶梯田 and 龙脊古壮寨; select one entrance and village before arranging the road ride. A full day from a Guilin bed needs an outward vehicle, daylight walk and return seat. A village night suits slow walking, morning light or camera bags, but the final road drop-off may still leave uphill stone paths. Planting and harvest determine the actual terrace colour.
Food and seasonal tradeoffs
Guilin rice noodles (桂林米粉) make an easy breakfast near the central hotel before a city or port morning. Yangshuo beer fish (啤酒鱼) is a shared dinner: agree the fish, weight price, spice and sauce before ordering. Oil tea (油茶) is a different regional flavour around the villages. For allergies, ask the kitchen about ingredients; the QR-menu guide covers a common ordering path.
Rain and high water affect boats, low caves and hill steps differently. In strong rain, shorten the exposed viewpoints and use an open indoor cave only after its final tour is known; a short lake-side walk remains an option in suitable conditions. The Li River operator’s dated notices decide which reach sails. Longji planting and harvest colours vary by field and date.
When a booking, river or return fails
Cruise cancelled or sold out: obtain route-specific refund or change terms from the issuing seller, then move Guilin → Yangshuo by an operating road or rail service if the Yangshuo bed still works. Keep the Guilin city block or a Xingping walk as the landscape alternative.
Passport form fails: ask the operator’s named customer desk for its foreign-passport route before payment; carry the original matching document to the boat or gate.
Hill or cave path closes: preserve #1 → #2 or #3 → #8 at street level instead of a restricted 仙鹤峰 path, flooded 还珠洞 or unconfirmed 芦笛岩 tour.
Last return is unclear: move the final night to Guilin before an early KWL or city-station departure. 龙头山码头, 阳朔站 and 阳朔县汽车客运服务站 are three different endpoints.
Payment stop line: have the date, vessel or gate, passport field, luggage route, Chinese port/station, final hotel entrance and reverse vehicle in hand.
