Gansu: choose the Hexi Corridor, two anchors or Dunhuang
For a first eight-night Hexi Corridor trip, use Lanzhou (1) → Zhangye (2) → Jiayuguan (1) → Dunhuang (4). It gives Danxia, frontier history and cave art separate stops; the cost is leaving Tianshui and Gannan for other journeys. With five nights, keep Zhangye and Dunhuang and cut the fort. With three nights, stay in Dunhuang and book Mogao before building the rest.
Night counts below are planning allocations with a usable arrival and a booked exit. A late arrival, sold-out cave date or poor rail connection can consume a full day. Add a night, cut a stop or choose the one-base trip; these examples require dated transport, tickets and opening from operators.

Three routes with different jobs
Each base has a reason to stay. Pick the shorter version when it protects the visit you came for, rather than treating every named city as compulsory.
Why this route: Choose the four-base route when the change from Danxia landscape to frontier fort to Buddhist cave art is the point of the journey. The extra Lanzhou night serves the arrival and the long westbound sequence.
Lanzhou 1 nightUse the east-end gateway only if your arrival lands here. It is an overnight gateway before the first full sightseeing day.
Zhangye 2 nightsKeep the city hotel and Danxia entrance as separate points; one full day can absorb the scenic-area visit and its return.
Jiayuguan 1 nightVisit the frontier fort when that history earns a stop, then continue west on a separately checked train.
Dunhuang 4 nightsReserve a Mogao Caves date, a separate desert or city day, and room to shift a weather-affected visit before departure.

When to cut it: If you enter at Zhangye, remove Lanzhou. If the fort ranks below the caves or the Jiayuguan connection fails, remove that base rather than compressing the Dunhuang cave day.

Why this route: Choose two anchors when coloured landforms and the caves matter more than collecting every corridor city. Jiayuguan and Wuwei remain optional future trips, separate visits requiring extra time.

When to cut it: With only three nights, choose Dunhuang alone if the caves are the priority. Two bases and a long transfer need extra nights.
ONE BASE · 3 NIGHTS
Dunhuang 敦煌, with Mogao 莫高窟 as the fixed decision
Why this route: Choose one base when cave art is the reason to travel and the east–west rail sequence would consume the available holiday. This is a focused Dunhuang visit rather than the whole Hexi Corridor.

When to cut it: Three nights leave little spare weather room after travel. Add a fourth night or move the date if missing Mogao would undermine the whole trip.

These are stop choices within Gansu. Compare their route role here, then choose the specific attraction, hotel and onward station for the stops you keep.
East-end gateway
Lanzhou
Use a city night if your flight or train ends here, or continue only if the onward ticket and arrival hour truly allow it.
Boundary: Allow a separate transfer block between an international arrival and westbound train.
Eastern cave branch
Tianshui and Maijishan
Choose this when sculpture and cliffside cave architecture matter enough to add an eastern stop before Lanzhou.
Boundary: Maijishan has its own admission and narrow elevated walkways; it needs nights beyond the eight-night corridor sample.
Optional corridor break
Wuwei
Stop for a chosen local historical site or to split a long east–west move; otherwise continue to Zhangye.
Boundary: A route role still needs a local visiting plan, hotel and onward station.
Boundary: The scenic area lies outside central Zhangye. Arrange its exact entrance and return separately from the hotel.
Frontier-history stop
Jiayuguan
Give the fort its own stop if the frontier history is a reason for the route.
Boundary: The fort, Overhanging Great Wall and First Beacon are different visits; choose which to fit into a single overnight.
Cave-art anchor
Dunhuang and Mogao
Choose Dunhuang as a destination in its own right. Set the official Mogao reservation first, then fit the desert or town day around it.
Boundary: A cave ticket, its Digital Exhibition Centre arrival and the cave visit are one operating flow. A desert ticket is a different visit.
Separate highland journey
Gannan
Choose this southern Gansu branch only if highland landscapes and a slower multi-base journey are your priority.
Boundary: It uses a separate route from the Lanzhou–Dunhuang corridor. Research ground access, elevation and conditions before giving it nights.
Book the fixed pieces; protect a fallback
Rail and the exit city
The Jiayuguan tourism bureau describes added Jiayuguan–Dunhuang trains as seasonal and directs travellers to 12306 for current times. Search each station pair and seat before locking its hotel. A Dunhuang flight or rail exit is useful only once booked; otherwise reserve a separate return journey.
Mogao is a timed operating visit
The Dunhuang Academy visitor page starts the trip at the Digital Exhibition Centre. Its 2026 ticket notice names the academy’s website and mini-program as the official channels. Find the date and ticket type there before fixing a nonrefundable Dunhuang stay. If unavailable, move the cave date or choose a Dunhuang trip without Mogao; an informal resale adds ticket and entry risk.
Season and weather change the day
Zhangye’s 2026 summer notice points to heat and strong convective weather; give Danxia its own daylight block after arrival. The Mogao operator also lists different summer and winter visitor windows. In June 2026, rain closed Mogao for a day, while the Jiayuguan bureau says fort-area hours can change for extreme weather or events. Read each date’s forecast and operator notice; if a site closes, use a city/rest day and ask the operator about the ticket rather than treating a different attraction as the same visit.
Park gate and last ride
Zhangye city places the Danxia scenic area outside central Zhangye. Choose the hotel and the entrance separately, then arrange the ride in and the last ride back for your visiting date. A rail ticket to Zhangye still leaves a separate park transfer.
Sequence: choose the route and booked entry/exit → secure a workable Mogao date if caves are essential → search each 12306 station pair → choose overnight bases → arrange Danxia entrance and return, Jiayuguan status, and local forecast.
