Which section fits your day?
Choose Badaling for a first Wall day you can anchor to a train in each direction. Choose Mutianyu when its tree-covered ridge and lift choices matter more and your road return is booked. Choose Simatai with Gubei Water Town for a longer day or overnight, particularly if you want an evening visit and hold the seasonal night ticket and a way home. These are separate sites with different tickets and return routes.
Most straightforward independent transport
Difference / who: broad, restored ramparts and a choice of north climb or shorter south turn suit a first independent Wall visit, though crowds and slopes remain. Door and return: hotel → Beijing North or Qinghe → Badaling Great Wall station → Guancheng; return by a separately booked train and a final city leg. Stay: day trip back to Beijing. Hard stop: no workable return train, no Wall day.
Forested ridge and different ascent choices
Difference / who: wooded towers and a Tower 14 cable route suit a visitor who values that ridge more than an easy rail return; the separate chairlift/slide gate is a different purchase. Door and return: Beijing hotel → booked road pickup or a viable Dongzhimen bus transfer → scenic shuttle and gate → the same booked road chain back. Stay: day trip only with a dated return. Hard stop: a coach request alone leaves the return unsolved.
Wall plus a water-town evening
Difference / who: a steeper Wall above a paid resort town suits visitors who want canal streets and a separately ticketed evening Wall visit. Door and return: Beijing hotel → Wangjing West Hub → booked Tourist Shuttle 22 → Gubei; use the current booking for the return stop and departure. Stay: overnight at Gubei for the night Wall. Hard stop: a night visit needs its own ticket and an overnight stay or booked car.
Only with a specific reason and route
Jinshanling in Hebei suits a longer hiking-oriented trip with a separately arranged transfer or stay. Juyongguan is another Beijing pass, but its steep staircase route is a different physical task. Neither replaces a booked Badaling rail return simply because the name is on a tour list. Read the operator route and open sector, then book the return before choosing either.

Do Badaling as a complete out-and-back
Start with the return train. Search 12306 for Beijing North (北京北) or Qinghe (清河) → Badaling Great Wall (八达岭长城), then the reverse journey. The railway ticket must say Badaling Great Wall (八达岭长城). The suburban S2 service uses a different Badaling (八达岭) station and timetable. Allow time from your hotel to the Beijing departure station, through railway security and back from the Wall to the return platform. If there is no workable return seat, move the Wall to another day.
At Badaling Great Wall station, follow the signs for Guancheng / walking entrance if you will climb from the pass. The north cableway entrance is a different choice. The station has a long escalator connection; the railway authority says return boarding access closes 12 minutes before departure. Treat that as a hard cutoff, with a generous additional buffer for the Wall exit, queues, security and descent into the station.
On the Wall: from Guancheng, walk north through the first towers toward North 4, then return the same way when your time or legs say stop. Continue toward North 8 only if the slope, crowd and return buffer still work. The southern route toward South 4 is a shorter alternative. If you use a lift, identify the north or south product before paying and match its exit tower to your route; steep stone remains after the lift. Take water, sun or cold-weather protection and footwear with grip.
The municipal listing read 26 September gives ordinary Badaling admission as CNY 40 from April through October, CNY 35 from November through March, with site hours 06:30–16:30 and 07:30–16:00 respectively. The scenic operator offers real-name advance booking and on-site purchase, with a separate foreign-visitor purchase entry; use its dated booking route and holiday capacity notice. The short English municipal listing describes broad free categories; the more detailed municipal concession terms limit the under-18 and 60+ free-entry rule to Chinese citizens, including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan residents, and foreign permanent residents with valid identity documents. A foreign passport alone gives no free entitlement. Match your document to the specific ticket category before purchase. Train fare and lift price depend on the actual dated service and product; budget those items as separate dated purchases.
Return: leave the rampart while the booked train is still comfortably ahead. Follow the high-speed station signs for 八达岭长城站, with the S2 stop a separate station. If the outward train is delayed, shorten the climb rather than risking the fixed return. After the train reaches Beijing North or Qinghe, allow a separate subway or taxi leg to your hotel.
Choose Mutianyu only with its road return settled
Mutianyu Great Wall Scenic Area (慕田峪长城景区) in Huairou offers a greener ridge and two different ascent gates. Use the active operator calendar for your date, passport entry and lift status. It currently advertises a 30-day ticket window; its older English notice says 15 days, so the live checkout controls. Peak and winter opening hours differ, and high wind or storms can stop lifts or Wall access. Wall admission, the internal shuttle, enclosed cable and chairlift/slide are distinct products; steep grades and steps remain beyond a lift.
Outward from Beijing: a named English MuBus product currently lists Dongzhimen Station Exit C → MuBus Visitor Center at Mutianyu, with scenic shuttle and Wall admission in that particular round-trip option. Obtain an issued booking that names the date, Exit C pickup pin, passengers, inclusions, return meeting time and city drop-off; a submitted form alone leaves the seat open. For independent public transport, the municipal route is Dongzhimen Public Transport Hub → Express 916 → Huairoubeidajie → H23/H3/H71 → Mutianyujingqu; read the dated timetables for all three bus legs and the final scenic shuttle.
Inside and turn back: the operator puts the scenic shuttle station about 3 km from the ticket gate. Use the North Ticket Gate → enclosed cable → Tower 14 → Tower 15 if open → Tower 14 → same cable down for its published lighter route. The Slide Ticket Gate → chairlift/slide is separate and tickets cover different gates; keep the same ascent and descent product unless the seller issues a matching combination. Set the turnaround by the booked coach meeting time or the last usable H-bus chain, allowing for cable and shuttle queues.
Return to Beijing: for the named coach, leave Tower 14 in time for the cable, scenic shuttle and MuBus Visitor Center return check-in, then continue to Dongzhimen and make a separate subway or licensed-taxi last leg to your hotel. For the public route, reverse it explicitly: Mutianyujingqu → H23/H3/H71 → Huairoubeidajie → Express 916 → Dongzhimen, then finish at your Beijing hotel. A same-day public-bus trip needs a dated H-bus plus Express 916 return that reaches Dongzhimen. A private driver is an alternative only with written scenic-area pickup, waiting and Beijing drop-off terms.
If the return or lift fails: if the coach seat, public last leg and written driver return all fail, choose Badaling with a valid train pair or move the Wall day. If the lift stops before ascent, ask about a ground-level visit or the seller's actual change terms; if it stops while you are on the Wall, ask scenic staff for the safe descent route and alert your return driver/guide.
When Simatai and Gubei justify an overnight
Gubei Water Town is a built resort below the steeper Simatai (司马台) section, a long trip from central Beijing. Choose it for town and Wall together. The 2026 city listing distinguishes Gubei admission, Simatai daytime entry and a separate night-Wall ticket; it lists day Wall entry 09:00–15:00 and a May–October night entry window 18:00–21:40, with exit by 22:40. These are the source-listed seasonal windows; the selected day and night ticket each govern entry.
Outward from Beijing: get from your hotel to Wangjing West Hub (望京西枢纽站). Beijing Bus Group's 3 April 2026 notice names direct Tourist Shuttle 22 to Gubei Water Town, listing outward rides at 09:00/13:00 and returns at 12:00/17:00 in that notice; the city's August 2026 access advice still lists the line. Read actual-date departures, fare and boarding point in the Beijing Bus Group's 一路同行 app; a private car needs written round-trip or overnight pickup terms.
Inside and turn back: enter Gubei Water Town with its own admission, walk its canal streets, then follow current signs and staff directions to the separately ticketed Simatai day or night entrance. Use the Wall sector open for that product and weather. For a daytime return, leave the Wall and town early enough to reach the return stop shown in the current shuttle booking; the town's closing time is separate from the bus departure.
Return or overnight: use the booked Shuttle 22 return to Wangjing West Hub, then a separate subway or licensed taxi to your Beijing hotel. Book both road legs before calling this a day trip. For the seasonal night Wall, stay inside or beside Gubei Water Town with room access and a next-day shuttle or driver arranged.
If a leg fails: if the shuttle's actual-date outward or return service or the night ticket is unavailable, choose a daytime town-and-Wall visit with a booked car return, book an overnight, or keep the day in Beijing. If weather closes the night Wall, enjoy the town only if its own admission and your room still make sense; keep the daytime and night products separate and use the arranged overnight return.
Jinshanling is a separate Hebei Wall trip for travellers specifically seeking a longer ridge hike. Plan its transfer, open walking section and accommodation independently; it has its own admission beyond Gubei or Mutianyu tickets. Juyongguan likewise needs its own entry and transfer. The default Badaling plan remains the lower-complexity choice when you want one Wall day inside a Beijing city stay.
Set the day in an order that survives changes
- Choose the section and your return. For Badaling, select both train legs on 12306. For Mutianyu, secure a dated coach or driver. For Simatai, book Shuttle 22 both ways or a driver, or book a stay.
- Match the ticket to the entrance and identity. Keep the original passport used for a booking. Distinguish admission from shuttle, cable car, chairlift, slide and night access.
- Choose a walking limit. Decide a turnaround tower before the climb. A lift can save ascent but still leaves steep ramparts and station walking.
- Read alerts the day before and on departure. Look for weather, lift and train alerts, crowd controls, changed pickup points and final check-in times.
Move the Wall day
Stay in Beijing until the rail return is booked. Use the city day you held flexible, such as Shichahai or a museum, and rebook both Wall train legs.
Keep Mutianyu conditional
A request alone leaves the seat open. Get the operator's issued pickup, inclusions and return time, or choose Badaling when its train pair works.
Shorten or cancel the climb
Use a ground-level visit only if it is worthwhile to you. Keep the ground-level option separate from any accessibility promise; turn back at the planned tower.
Protect the departure cutoff
At Badaling, turn around earlier and head to the correct high-speed station. If a booked service is missed, ask railway staff or 12306 about the actual change options; they depend on your ticket.
