Day: Tue 13 Oct · Temple, lunch and rest; Square optional
Route: Temple East Gate → Hall of Prayer → a seated break before 90 minutes → Echo Wall and Circular Mound only if the remaining distance, open paths and confirmed exit/pickup fit this traveller → seated lunch → hotel. South Gate is useful only when its exit and lawful pickup work; shorten the route before the southern sites rather than assume a long return to East Gate is easier. The Square is an optional extra only with confirmed entry and spare walking/queue capacity. This is our planning sequence, not an operator's guaranteed seasonal route.
Booking to secure: Temple combined ticket if you want the named core sites. No Square booking is needed for the baseline Temple–lunch–rest day. Only if you separately choose a Square visit, secure its reservation for the actual date, session and entrance or confirm that a current eligible-booking exception applies to that exact entry.
Shorter version: Return to the hotel after lunch by default. Shorten the Temple before the southern sites if the walking limit is near.
Day: Wed 14 Oct · Summer Palace
Route: East Palace Gate → Renshou Hall → Leshou Hall → east start of the Long Corridor, then turn back by the same approach to East Palace Gate → confirmed legal road pickup → hotel. Do not add the Marble Boat or North Ruyi Gate to this knee-pain example.
Booking to secure: Passport-assisted ticket purchase at the staffed entrance window if the online foreign number fails
Shorter version: No Longevity Hill climb or full lake circuit. Keep the afternoon for recovery.
Daily start, exit and recovery plan
Times are planning allowances from a Wangfujing-area hotel, not measured journeys or guaranteed queue lengths. Save the current map routes and confirmations. Use a taxi where it saves walking, but follow the actual permitted drop-off and pickup points. If your capacity is lower, shorten a route before leaving the hotel.
07:15–14:30 · Palace only
This day requires an issued Palace Museum reservation. Morning admission is the intended example; adjust the start if only a different valid session is confirmed.
- 07:15 planning departure with original passport, water and offline confirmation.
- Reach the Donghuamen side approach, then follow East Tongzi River Road to Meridian Gate. If directed west, the published alternative is Xihuamen → West Tongzi River Road → Meridian Gate. Donghuamen and Xihuamen are approach points, not Palace admission gates.
- 08:30–12:30 planning band for the main Palace route, with seated pauses and fewer side halls if needed. Use the actual booked admission window.
- Leave through the currently signed visitor exit, take a seated lunch and use the legal taxi pickup shown on the live map.
- Return to the hotel by about 14:30. No Square detour is needed to make this Palace visit work.
06:45–16:30 or later · Mutianyu on the English bus
Choose MuBus’s Round-Trip Bus with Entry Ticket, English 08:00 departure. The checked page uses Dongzhimen Exit C and includes scenic admission plus the internal shuttle. Cable car is extra; lunch is a separate package option. Do not substitute the Chinese B1/CNY80 product.
- 06:45 planning departure from the hotel; reach Dongzhimen Exit C early enough for the operator’s confirmed check-in.
- 08:00 advertised departure. The operator’s example reaches Mutianyu about 10:00; road delays can change this.
- Use the included scenic shuttle, then the enclosed cable car to Tower 14. Add Tower 15 only if the uneven ground and steps are manageable, then return the same way.
- Leave the Wall with enough time for cable-car and shuttle queues. For the advertised 15:00 return bus, start the final descent by 13:45 as a planning buffer; the guide’s actual meeting instruction controls.
- The advertised city arrival is around 16:30, not a deadline you can book another activity against. Keep the evening empty.
- If the cable car is suspended or the short Wall route is beyond your limit, stay at the visitor area or move the trip. Do not replace the cable-car plan with a steep stair climb.
Temple of Heaven, lunch and recovery; Square only if still feasible
The Temple’s inner sights are normally open Tuesday–Sunday. Buy the combined ticket if you want the Hall of Prayer, Echo Wall and Circular Mound; park-only entry is different. Same-day purchase depends on capacity.
- 07:30 planning departure by taxi to Temple East Gate / 天坛东门.
- 08:00–11:00 is an editorial maximum allowance for this Temple block, with a seated break before the traveller's 90-minute limit. Check the day's open paths and confirm the intended gate and lawful pickup before committing to the southward sites.
- Continue to Echo Wall and Circular Mound only if the remaining walk and return work; otherwise turn back earlier and leave by the workable open gate. Do not send a tired traveller back across the park merely because a printed route says so.
- After lunch, return to the hotel by default. Enter Tiananmen Square only if you independently choose it, have a confirmed separate reservation or currently confirmed eligible-booking exception for the exact date, session and entrance, and still have capacity for the security queue and walk.
- Drop the Square if its extra walk or security queue exceeds the limit. A roadside view or unconfirmed exception is not admission.
07:30–14:30 · Summer Palace and recovery afternoon
Beijing 12345 confirms staff-assisted passport ticket purchase at an entrance window for visitors whose foreign phone cannot complete online booking. Use the same original passport on the day.
- 07:30 planning departure; aim for the staffed East Palace Gate / 颐和园东宫门 around 08:30, allowing extra time for ticketing.
- After the staffed East Palace Gate entry, choose Renshou Hall and Leshou Hall, then only the east beginning of the Long Corridor. Reverse there or sooner when the 90-minute seated-break or pain stop line requires it; the path length and step-free status have not been measured for this traveller.
- Do not climb Longevity Hill or circle Kunming Lake. Take a seated pause before continuing along the corridor.
- Return along the same approach to East Palace Gate and use the pre-confirmed lawful road pickup near that gate. Do not continue to the Marble Boat or North Ruyi Gate for this worked mobility limit. If an entrance, path or pickup arrangement changes, shorten or cancel the park block rather than improvise a longer exit.
- If you tire earlier, turn back toward the entry instead of completing the loop. Have lunch and return to the hotel by roughly 14:30.

All times below are Beijing time, UTC+8. The Palace releases tickets seven days before the visit at 20:00. Its English booking page offers email-code sign-in and passport booking. Prepare the account and exact traveller details before the release; do not mistake a booking-window calculation for available stock.

If the Palace booking succeeds on a different day
Keep one confirmed Palace reservation and move the flexible parks around it. These alternatives preserve all four full days and keep the Great Wall separate.
- Palace confirmed for 11 Oct: 11 Palace; 12 Mutianyu; 13 Temple + seated recovery; Square only if separately chosen, entry confirmed and walking capacity remains; 14 Summer Palace.
- Palace confirmed for 13 Oct: 11 Summer Palace; 12 Mutianyu; 13 Palace; 14 Temple + seated recovery; Square only if separately chosen, entry confirmed and walking capacity remains.
- Palace confirmed for 14 Oct: 11 Temple + seated recovery; Square only if separately chosen, entry confirmed and walking capacity remains; 12 Mutianyu; 13 Summer Palace; 14 Palace.
- If you independently chose the Square, change or confirm its entry credential for the actual new date, session and entrance; moving an itinerary line does not change an issued reservation.
If you separately choose Tiananmen Square
The Square is optional for this knee-pain example. If you still choose a dedicated Square visit, the newer authority notice describes a real-name booking 1–7 days ahead for a specific date, session and entrance. Its earlier rule recognises certain eligible same-day attraction bookings; do not rely on that exception until the current authority confirms it for your exact entry. A separate booking is the lower-risk path when that confirmation is unavailable. If neither entry route is secured or the walking/queue limit is reached, return to the hotel after the Temple. No Square visit or booking is needed for the Palace-only side approach.
Fix the long transfer, then leave the parks flexible
Confirm the dated Mutianyu transport after choosing a feasible Palace arrangement. Check the English product name, Exit C meeting point, admission inclusion, cable-car cost and return pickup in the operator’s response. A submitted request is not a confirmed seat. Temple and Summer Palace provide staffed purchase routes, but capacity and temporary notices can still alter the day. Keep accommodation cancellation terms suitable for your own plan.
The walking limit is a reason to shorten the day
Eight kilometres is the example traveller’s ceiling on level ground, not a measured distance for any route here. Palace courtyards, Square checkpoints and the Wall include standing, steps or uneven ground. Keep seated pauses and omit the Square or a side hall when needed. The short cable-car Wall plan is not step-free and cannot guarantee tolerance for knee pain.
What to do when the default plan breaks
Palace sold out for 11 October
Try the 13 October release, then the 14 October release, using the exact calendar above. If one succeeds, follow its replacement order. Only if you separately chose the Square, change or confirm that entry credential for its actual date, session and entrance.
No Palace ticket confirmed for any of the three days
Remove the Palace interior. Keep Monday Mutianyu, one Temple day and one Summer Palace day; use the remaining central-city block for rest or a short walk near the hotel. If the separate Square reservation succeeds, it remains usable on its own. Do not buy an unofficial entry promise.
Mutianyu weather, cable-car alert or transport failure
Move the Wall to a flexible city day only after the operator confirms the replacement date and the original order’s change terms. Keep the confirmed Palace date. If no workable transfer exists, omit the Wall; do not squeeze it into Palace day.
Optional Square entry or security queue does not work
Keep the Temple visit and seated lunch, then return to the hotel. A Palace ticket may support Square entry only under a currently confirmed eligible-booking exception; a roadside view or unconfirmed request is not Square admission. Do not spend this traveller's recovery buffer trying an uncertain gate.
Pain or fatigue is higher than expected
Use the nearest signed exit and end the sightseeing block. Remove optional walking before removing the seated break; do not add another ticketed attraction to fill the afternoon.
Before you act
Does this include the arrival day?
No. Saturday 10 October is the example’s arrival, transfer and setup day. The plan uses four full sightseeing days from Sunday through Wednesday.
Must every attraction be booked a week in advance?
No. The Palace needs its own advance ticket. For an optional dedicated Square visit, the newer notice describes a separate advance reservation while the older authority rule recognises certain valid same-day attraction bookings; confirm any exception for the exact entry before relying on it. Mutianyu needs a dependable dated return-transfer plan. Temple and Summer Palace have staffed purchase routes, with capacity and ticket-type limits.
How likely am I to get Palace or Square tickets?
The official notices provide booking windows, not a dependable chance of success for your dates. Check the official dated result; none of the example’s tickets or seats has been reserved.
Can I combine the Great Wall and Forbidden City if I lose a day?
Do not combine them for this first-visit, knee-pain example. Keep the confirmed Palace and separate Wall day; drop a flexible park or the optional Square instead.
