The six checks, and who answers each one
Send questions 1, 3, 4 and 5 to the insurer, ask question 2 of the exact facility, and check question 6 against the entry basis you will actually use. Record every answer; a product name alone cannot complete this check.
Direct billing, or reimbursement only?
- Ask
- If I am admitted to a hospital in China, will you guarantee payment to the hospital directly, or do I pay and claim back?
- Why here
- No official current universal deposit or upfront-payment figure was found. If the policy reimburses only, you may still need usable money at the counter.
- Use it
- If reimbursement-only, make the four-question hospital call before departure.
Can you pay on the spot with what you carry?
- Ask
- Which payment methods does my nearest realistic hospital accept from a foreign traveller?
- Why here
- A foreign card working at a hotel does not prove it will work at a hospital counter. An adequate policy plus an unusable card is still a payment failure.
- Use it
- Confirm the exact facility's current methods; do not infer them from another hospital.
Where are you actually going?
- Ask
- What is covered for medical evacuation, and is there a distance or destination limit?
- Why here
- A facility list for one city, province or consular district is not nationwide coverage or a capability guarantee. Remote legs make evacuation cover operational.
- Use it
- Confirm a realistic receiving facility and route for every remote leg.
Could the delay outlast your cover?
- Ask
- How many extra days of accommodation and rebooking are covered if I cannot leave on schedule?
- Why here
- If an embassy or consulate cannot reissue a document, the official Exit-Entry Permit route has an outer decision limit of 30 working days after acceptance; the authority may decide sooner.
- Use it
- Compare the case-specific expected timing and official outer limit with the policy's exact extension-day cap.
Does it cover what you will do?
- Ask
- Are the activities on my itinerary covered, and is there an altitude limit?
- Why here
- High-altitude or remote itineraries can trigger ordinary-policy exclusions that are easy to miss and costly to discover mid-trip.
- Use it
- Match every activity and altitude band to the exclusions, not just the destination name.
Is insurance required to enter?
- Ask
- Does the exact entry policy I will use state an insurance requirement?
- Why here
- None of the unilateral, 240-hour transit, mutual-exemption Q&A or regional-policy sources reviewed states one. Visa applications and commercial operators are outside that scan.
- Use it
- Treat insurance as a risk decision; do not confuse possession of a policy with adequacy.
The facility-specific hospital call
- Do you require payment or a deposit before treatment?
- Do you direct-bill my exact insurer, or must I pay and claim back?
- Which payment methods and foreign cards do you accept from a foreign traveller?
- Which international or English-language number confirms this before travel, and which number handles an after-hours emergency?
No answer creates a universal deposit figure. It establishes only the current practice at the exact facility you expect to use.
The official outer limit is 30 working days after acceptance
If a passport is lost and an embassy or consulate in China cannot issue a replacement, the fallback Exit-Entry Permit guide gives an outer decision limit of 30 working days after acceptance. The authority may decide sooner. Compare the policy's exact trip-extension days with the case-specific expected timing and that official outer limit. Then open the five-route lost-passport page.
Six worked cases
City trip with direct billing
- Conditions
- A 14-day Beijing and Shanghai trip; the policy guarantees payment to the exact hospital and the traveller carries a confirmed payment method.
- Result
- Questions 1–2 are answered. Evacuation limits in question 3 and delay cover in question 4 remain.
Reimbursement-only at the counter
- Conditions
- Payment is required before treatment and the foreign card is declined.
- Result
- For an emergency, seek urgent care first and alert medical staff immediately; do not wait for insurance approval. Once urgent care is underway, the payment problem is immediate liquidity, not the later claim.
“China requires insurance, so I am covered”
- Conditions
- A traveller treats entry compliance as proof of policy quality.
- Result
- No reviewed entry policy states a requirement, and owning a policy does not answer direct-billing or extension-cover questions.
Remote or high-altitude travel
- Conditions
- The itinerary adds remote and high-altitude stops.
- Result
- Evacuation limits and altitude exclusions become live. Confirm a realistic receiving facility and transport route for each leg.
The actual delay outlasts extension cover
- Conditions
- The accepted document case takes longer than the policy's seven covered extension days.
- Result
- The uncovered amount is the actual case duration minus the policy cap; do not convert the official 30-working-day outer limit into a guaranteed minimum.
Policy bought after departure
- Conditions
- The traveller buys in the airport or after arrival.
- Result
- Check whether the exact policy permits post-departure purchase, when cover starts and whether a waiting period applies before paying.
Failure recovery
Emergency care comes first. If you are already at a hospital, tell medical staff immediately that you need urgent assessment. If you need an ambulance in mainland China, call 120 or ask someone nearby to call and give your location. Do not delay seeking emergency care while waiting for insurer approval or checking payment. A companion can work on billing while staff assess you. Use the medical-help route for the emergency handoff; the payment steps below do not replace it and do not promise free treatment.
Hospital wants payment
- Trigger
- For non-emergency care, or while emergency care is already underway, payment is demanded and the policy reimburses only.
- First action
- Ask the hospital to contact the insurer's emergency assistance line directly.
- Alternative
- Use a method the hospital accepts and keep every document for the claim.
- Escalation
- Contact your embassy or consular section if you cannot pay at all.
Your card is declined
- Trigger
- For non-emergency care, or while emergency care is already underway, a foreign card fails at the hospital counter.
- First action
- Ask which methods the hospital currently accepts.
- Alternative
- Ask whether a companion, accommodation or insurer assistance line can arrange payment.
- Escalation
- Contact your consular section if no payment route remains.
The delay outlasts the policy
- Trigger
- A document process will continue beyond the cover period.
- First action
- Notify the insurer immediately, before the policy expires.
- Alternative
- Check for an automatic extension for circumstances beyond your control.
- Escalation
- Budget the uncovered period and rebook early.
Already in China uninsured
- Trigger
- The trip has started without cover.
- First action
- Check purchase and waiting-period rules before buying anything mid-trip.
- Alternative
- Make the four-question hospital call and keep accessible funds.
- Escalation
- Use your embassy's guidance for its own nationals.
What we could not settle
- Deposit and treatment costs: no official current universal figure was located.
- Direct billing: only the exact insurer and hospital can confirm their bilateral arrangement.
- Visa-application requirements: the scan covered four entry-policy sources, not consular visa checklists.
- Chinese-issued visitor policies: availability and terms for short stays were not settled.
Complete the adequacy check
- Send questions 1, 3, 4 and 5 to your insurer.
- Record whether direct billing is guaranteed to the exact hospital.
- Make the four-question hospital call for a realistic facility.
- Compare extension cover with the actual case timing and official outer limit.
- Recheck cover whenever remote or high-altitude legs change.
