Shanghai Pudong International Transfer: Documents and Baggage

For a Sydney–Shanghai–London connection, the routine COVID-era health card is no longer required. Keep your passport, onward booking and baggage receipt ready, and follow International Transfer / 国际中转 to the airline transfer desk. Confirm the onward boarding pass and baggage route before collecting bags or entering general arrivals.

Sydney–Shanghai–London after a difficult 2022 transfer

The original traveller remembers repeated forms in 2022 and asks about next March. The travel year, passport, flights and layover are not established, so this page gives the current transfer decision and recovery steps, not a personal entry ruling.

What changed, and what still applies

The routine entry/exit health declaration ended on 1 November 2023. This does not cancel immigration arrival cards, customs declarations for goods, document checks or security. Travellers with the specified symptoms or a diagnosed infectious disease must still declare proactively and cooperate with health checks. Eligible international connections can use the 24-hour direct-transit route without immigration inspection; eligibility and operational handling must be confirmed for the actual journey.

Follow this transfer sequence

1. Before leaving Sydney, ask China Eastern whether both boarding passes will be issued, how the checked bag will be handled in Shanghai, and whether the actual connection can remain airside. Keep the booking and bag receipt offline.
2. After landing, follow International Transfer / 国际中转 signs and show the onward booking at the carrier transfer desk. If you cannot find it, show the request below at the nearest staffed information point.
3. Obtain or confirm the London boarding pass. Ask explicitly whether you must collect the bag in Shanghai and whether entry formalities are needed. A missing onward boarding pass alone does not mean you must enter China.
4. Follow staff through the document and security checks required for that connection, then check the actual gate and gate-closing time on the boarding pass and airport screens. Go to the gate before using airside facilities.

If the airside route is unavailable

Before joining general arrivals or collecting bags, ask the carrier to explain the applicable entry and re-check route and whether you can lawfully use it with your passport and documents. If that route is unavailable or the connection cannot be completed, ask the carrier transfer/service desk to arrange the appropriate ticket-handling or rebooking option and trace the bag. Ask about charges and assistance; no free change, hotel or same-day onward seat is promised.

Hotel and future-date boundary

An airside facility and a landside hotel involve different processes. Leaving transit for a landside hotel requires the applicable entry formalities. Do not assume an Australian ordinary-passport exemption stated through 31 December 2026 applies to an unanchored next March or to a different passport. Confirm date-specific entry eligibility before planning an exit.
