Eat hotpot alone in China: a named city stop and a one-person order

Choose a solo hotpot stop on your route

For the solo traveller visiting Hong Kong, Chengdu, Chongqing, Shanghai and Beijing, start with Banmi Yatai in Chengdu for a restaurant built around eating hotpot alone. Xiabu Xiabu at Gala Place in Hong Kong is another named small-pot option. A two-person offer elsewhere does not mean every hotpot meal requires a companion.

Eat alone in Chengdu at Banmi Yatai

For the Chengdu part of your route, choose 独食火锅·半米屋台（直营总店） at 成都市青羊区树德里1号附10号, beside 滋味烤鱼. The Ctrip branch listing in Source 6 gives 11:00–21:30. Navigate to the full Chinese address near 西大街 metro station; avoid selecting the separate 东郊记忆 branch from a review.

This is a restaurant built around solo hotpot. April 2025 Red Star News reporting, republished by Jimu News in Source 7, describes Banmi’s individual booths, interviews its founder about the one-person format and meets a traveller eating alone. Combined with the current named branch listing, that makes it a practical choice for this trip; you do not need a companion just because another restaurant advertises a two-person deal. The report does not precisely identify which branch it visited; no exact booth count is promised at this address.

呷哺呷哺（家樂坊店） — basement unit B03, Gala Place, 56 Dundas Street, Mong Kok, Hong Kong. The mall’s restaurant listing gives +852 2360 0339 and daily restaurant hours of 12:00–23:00. These are listed hours, not a confirmed last-order time or an empty-table guarantee.

Arrival: the mall’s official directions name Yau Ma Tei MTR station, Exit A2. Walk to 56 Dundas Street and follow the basement B03 signs. Save the Chinese address: 香港旺角登打士街56號家樂坊地庫B03，呷哺呷哺. Do not go to Coucou (湊湊) simply because it is another hotpot brand in the same mall.

Use the clickable official restaurant and mall-location links in Sources 3 and 4 below. The current official restaurant page and Hang Lung’s 2026 merchant list both identify this branch. The chain’s published individual-pot format supports this choice; the Hong Kong branch listing establishes its location and menu examples, not a firsthand test of its seating or minimum spend. This is a Taiwan-style small-pot meal, not a promise of the same shared-pot experience as Chongqing.

The mall highlights a truffle-mushroom broth and US beef. Treat those as examples to locate on the menu, not a guaranteed set, dietary assurance or current price. Hong Kong prices are in HKD: do not apply a mainland RMB meal figure here. Choose a single pot and see the full HKD amount, including any service charge, broth, sauce and drink charge, before agreeing.

Order one pot and see the total before agreeing

• Ask for a 单人套餐 (one-person set) or one small pot with one meat or tofu portion, vegetables and rice/noodles. This is an ordering template, not a claim that a named set is currently stocked.
• Choose broth first. For a gentle first experience, ask for 不辣 (not spicy). A mild, tomato or mushroom label alone does not establish ingredients or allergy suitability.
• Ask for the final one-person amount including broth, dipping sauce, any cover charge and drinks. Decline a second-person charge unless you deliberately prefer that total. A two-person coupon is not the same thing as a minimum party size.

The official listing does not publish a current branch menu or minimum charge. No exact price, zero-minimum promise or empty table is established here. Read the menu and total before ordering; you do not need to prepay a two-person deal to attempt this meal.

I am dining alone. Please show me the one-person set or small-pot menu, not a two-person set. Please tell me the total for one person, including broth, sauce and other charges. Is there a minimum spend? If I must pay for two people, I will not order.

If the restaurant is full or offers only a two-person deal

Ask whether you can order one pot à la carte instead of buying the two-person promotion, and ask for the total before joining a long queue. If that total or wait does not work, decline and keep the rest of your sightseeing day. Malatang (麻辣烫) is a meal fallback: check the displayed price and any minimum weight before selecting a small bowl. It is cooked to order, not the same sit-down hotpot experience.

A Beijing alternative only when already in Changping

The operator also documents Xiabu Xiabu at Badaling Outlets, C2-305 (八达岭奥莱，呷哺呷哺，C2区305), with an explicit individual-pot format. This is a distant Changping shopping outing, not the default for a central Beijing day or the Great Wall ticket entrance. Keep it only as a stop already on your route.
