China wallet and Revolut fees: a worked French Standard example
Keep spending money in your own bank or card account; linking a foreign card to Alipay or Weixin Pay is not the same as loading a spendable wallet balance. For everyday merchant purchases, compare the wallet fee and the issuer’s final currency conversion. The worked example below gives actual arithmetic for a specified French Revolut plan, alongside the conditions that can change it.
Short visit or longer stay: keep funds accessible
For either a two-week visit or a five-month stay, keep each person’s bank account and card in that person’s own name. A foreign-card merchant purchase does not require loading the entire budget into Alipay. For rent, tuition or a transfer to a person, first identify the recipient and supported payment route separately.
A RMB500 meal: what the charges mean
Illustration, not a live exchange quote: a France-branch Revolut Standard account pays a merchant on Monday 14 September 2026 at 12:00 China time. Assume enough EUR balance and unused monthly exchange allowance; an illustrative Revolut rate of EUR1 = CNY8; no funding, merchant or other issuer charge; and billing in CNY. The merchant’s bill is RMB500. The following totals are arithmetic under these assumptions, not a transaction we performed.
| Payment route | Wallet fee / CNY card charge | Illustrative EUR total |
|---|---|---|
| Weixin international card, ordinary rule | 3% × 500 = RMB15 / RMB515 | 515 ÷ 8 = EUR64.375, about EUR64.38 |
| Weixin, only if this purchase qualifies for the 2026 waiver | RMB0 / RMB500 | 500 ÷ 8 = EUR62.50 |
| Merchant accepts the same card directly and adds no charge | No Weixin fee / RMB500 | 500 ÷ 8 = EUR62.50 |
| Alipay with the same card | Use its actual checkout fee F; card charge = 500 + F | (500 + F) ÷ 8; F=0 gives EUR62.50, F=15 gives about EUR64.38 |
Under these assumptions, the ordinary Weixin fee adds RMB15, or EUR1.875, compared with a zero-fee route. Use a direct card only if the merchant accepts it without another charge. For Alipay, substitute the fee displayed at your checkout for F before comparing the totals.
The Weixin threshold is per purchase, not only the amount above RMB200
| Merchant amount | Ordinary international-card wallet fee | Card charge before FX |
|---|---|---|
| RMB100 | RMB0 | RMB100 |
| RMB200 | RMB0 | RMB200 |
| RMB201 | RMB6.03 | RMB207.03 |
| RMB500 | RMB15 | RMB515 |
Tenpay’s 15 January 2026 rule charges 3% of the whole purchase when it exceeds RMB200. Tencent’s 27 May announcement offers qualifying first-time international-card users a waiver during its 27 May–31 December 2026 campaign: 90 consecutive calendar days after their first purchase, within the stated daily RMB1,000 limit. Check that your own checkout actually applies the offer. Prior users, purchases outside the offer or beyond its allowance cannot assume a zero fee. Do not split one purchase merely to avoid the rule. This is a Weixin rule, not a universal Alipay or card-issuer rule. Sources 1–2.
The linked Tenpay fee/refund rule dated 15 January 2026 and Tencent campaign announcement dated 27 May 2026 were read on 13 September 2026. The campaign runs from 27 May to 31 December 2026 and has first-user, 90-day and daily-limit conditions; the actual checkout must apply it. Recheck if the terms, campaign or your eligibility change.
The same meal can cost more on a weekend or after the plan allowance
France Standard’s published terms allow EUR1,000 of exchange per monthly allowance period, then charge 1% on the excess. Its weekend exchange fee is 1%, using the interval Friday 17:00 to Sunday 18:00 New York time. Revolut sets a variable rate of its own; a fee-free exchange is not a guarantee of a particular market rate. Other exchange activity also consumes the allowance. Use the reset date and usage shown in your account. Source 3.
Revolut France Standard Part II, effective 26 November 2025, and the linked holding-currency guidance were read on 13 September 2026. These are France-branch Standard terms, not every Revolut plan. Recheck your country, plan, allowance/reset, exchange interval and current quote before converting.
If the ordinary RMB500 Weixin meal instead converts on Saturday 19 September 2026 at 12:00 China time, that is inside the published weekend interval. With the same assumed rate and unused allowance, EUR64.375 × 1.01 = EUR65.01875, about EUR65.02. This isolates the weekend charge; it does not assume a rate will remain unchanged. If you already hold sufficient CNY and no exchange occurs for the payment, this example’s new exchange fee does not apply. Revolut’s current France help lists CNY as a currency you can hold and exchange; check the selected spending account in the app.
A usable funding rhythm for the two stays
Clearly assumed budget: Parent: EUR500 exchange for a two-week visit, within one otherwise unused allowance period
Exchange-allowance comparison: EUR500 is below the EUR1,000 Standard allowance: EUR0 excess-allowance fee
Practical choice: Fund the own-name card before departure and retain a second card and some cash.
Clearly assumed budget: Son: EUR2,500 exchanged all at once, no prior use in that allowance period
Exchange-allowance comparison: (2,500 − 1,000) × 1% = EUR15 excess-allowance fee
Practical choice: Avoid an unnecessary five-month conversion just to fund a wallet.
Clearly assumed budget: Son: EUR500 exchanged in each of five distinct, otherwise unused allowance periods
Exchange-allowance comparison: Each stays below EUR1,000: EUR0 excess-allowance fee across this example
Practical choice: Keep enough accessible money for the next payments and replenish in time; do not delay a due bill just to reach a reset.
These assumed budgets compare the exchange-allowance fee only. Add any weekend charge, wallet fee and cash cost, and use the rate shown for your own conversion before deciding how much to exchange. Use your own country and plan terms if they differ from France Standard.
Can you fund Revolut while you are in China?
- For an existing, usable Revolut account, obtain its current EUR bank details in the app. From your own French bank, arrange an EUR transfer to your own Revolut account using those details; do not use an account number copied from a guide or stranger.
- Make sure the sending bank and Revolut authentication still work abroad. A travel data eSIM does not by itself receive the verification messages for your home-bank number. Keep the relevant home SIM, app approval and recovery access available.
- Treat the money as available only when Revolut shows it received and usable. Revolut says arrival depends on the sending bank and it generally cannot track a transfer before receipt. It charges no receiving fee, although other banks may charge. Source 4.
- If a transfer is late, obtain its confirmation or applicable SWIFT/GPI trace from the sending bank and use official in-app support. Use an existing balance, a second own-name card or cash for an immediate purchase; do not send the same amount again because a pending transfer has not appeared yet.
Before relying on a transfer abroad, check your account access, beneficiary details and bank authentication. Leave enough available balance or an alternative own-name card for payments due before the transfer arrives. Revolut funds remain in that account; linking its card does not itself create a wallet balance for personal transfers.
The linked Revolut bank-transfer guidance and Tenpay international-card agreement were read on 13 September 2026. Your own account access, beneficiary details, available functions and payment acceptance remain individual checks.
Read the payment and refund states before trying again
- Before authorising, save the merchant’s CNY total, wallet fee, card selected and final currency. If a terminal offers home-currency conversion, compare that quoted conversion with paying in CNY; the worked totals assume CNY.
- After payment, match the wallet order to the issuer’s completed debit. A pending authorisation is not the final FX amount. If the wallet/order or card shows pending, check the merchant’s order status and ask the platform/issuer to trace it before making a replacement payment.
- If the total is unacceptable before payment, decline that checkout and use an available alternative. If the merchant cannot accept your foreign card or merchant-wallet payment, agree cash before consuming the service, or choose another provider.
- For a refund, retain the original order ID and the refund reference, amount and currency. Tenpay states it refunds its wallet fee proportionally with the refunded transaction; that does not guarantee the merchant approves a refund or that issuer FX differences and other charges are returned. Count a refund as received only when the receiving account shows the completed credit.
For your own total, check the card’s issuing country and plan, allowance used and reset date, purchase amount/date, merchant currency and displayed wallet fee. Reconcile the final debit or refund in your account; the illustrative totals above are not a live exchange quote.
