Keep essential travel working even when foreign services do not

Use a named roaming or travel-eSIM service for your main mobile data, keep a second service ready, and save the essentials needed to reach your hotel without either. For the travellers below, that means an Airalo Asia plan, eligible Vodafone roaming or eligible Optus Daily Roaming, with the other type of service as backup. None is a promise that every foreign app will work.

Prepare a backup you can actually use

• Pair home-carrier roaming with a travel eSIM, rather than buying the same underlying plan from two shops. Check the named network or roaming arrangement where shown; a different seller alone does not establish an independent route. Confirm the backup covers China before departure, and leave its mobile data off until needed.
• Keep your home number available for account recovery and OTPs under your carrier’s roaming terms. Disable data switching to that line if you do not want accidental roaming charges. Do not assume a data-only eSIM supplies ordinary calls, texts or a Chinese phone number.
• Install a China-local map such as Amap/Gaode or Baidu Maps and prepare your payment route. Separately save screenshots or printouts of tickets, the hotel’s Chinese name/address and telephone number, the airport-to-hotel route and an emergency contact. These saved records remain usable if the map or payment app has no connection; keep a physical payment fallback too.
• Save the provider order, installation instructions, APN instructions and website/app support route before travel. After arrival, check the one message or app function you need next. If it fails, switch to the backup and continue your trip; you do not need to test every function in every city.

eSIM with VPN, or an eSIM plus a separate VPN?

An eSIM supplies your mobile plan; a separate VPN uses an existing internet connection. They are different things. Airalo currently explains that its China-covered eSIMs route data outside mainland China, so its service does not require a separate VPN for that routing. “VPN included” in a seller’s description does not mean you must install another app, and is not by itself a guarantee about a particular service.

For the EU-bought iPhone visiting Shanghai and Indonesia, use Airalo’s Asia regional catalogue as the default. A 5GB/30-day package is a sensible starting choice only for a trip within 30 days and expected use within 5GB; choose more data if your normal use requires it. Before paying, check that the exact package lists both mainland China and Indonesia, fits all dates, supports your unlocked iPhone, and shows acceptable activation and support terms. Use the final price shown for that package in your chosen currency.

Keep your home SIM for your number and as a backup if that account has usable roaming in both countries. If home roaming already includes both places at an acceptable cost, use it first and keep the travel eSIM as the alternative. Hotel Wi-Fi is a different connection: a mobile-data routing benefit does not carry over when you join it.

Preparing connectivity before leaving India

For ordinary travel, choose confirmed home roaming or Airalo’s China data-eSIM route before you leave, then prepare the backup above. Do not make an unspecified consumer VPN your only way to reach tickets, maps, payment or your hotel. If you need an employer system, get the employer-approved connection and a reachable support contact before departure.

Install what you need from its official source while you still have a working connection. Confirm that you can open the account and find recovery/support instructions; follow the purchased eSIM’s activation policy so you do not start its validity early by mistake. If a specific personal service remains unavailable, decide on a suitable alternative for that service instead of repeatedly trying unrelated VPN apps.

Vodafone Australia, Google, WhatsApp and Instagram

If My Vodafone confirms that your plan is eligible for China, use Vodafone $5 Roaming as your main connection and an Airalo China eSIM as backup. Vodafone’s published terms checked on 29 August 2026 charge AUD5 per eligible used plan per 24-hour period, subject to your plan allowance and the 90-day annual cap. Check your account’s current price, inclusion and China eligibility before turning on data.

Roaming coverage does not guarantee Google, WhatsApp calls/photos or Instagram uploads. Try the function you need after arrival; if it fails, switch data connections and use your saved travel details. Save Vodafone’s support route before travel. If you want predictable total data cost over many days, a prepaid travel-eSIM package may be a better primary choice.

Optus AUD5/5GB roaming, Google and WhatsApp

If My Optus shows Daily Roaming and China eligibility for your service, Optus Daily Roaming is a usable primary option. Current Optus terms name eligible Consumer Choice Plus plans and charge AUD5 for 5GB, ending after 24 hours or when 5GB is used, whichever comes first. Continued use can trigger another AUD5/5GB block; it is not a universal daily spending cap. Mobile talk/text inclusions and data-only plans differ.

Check My Optus → Services → your service → Add-ons before travel. Enable the required account/device roaming settings only once you accept the charging terms; turn off large automatic backups and video downloads. Keep an Airalo China eSIM available if it fits your phone. Google or WhatsApp access still depends on the connection and service: use the backup if needed rather than buying a VPN automatically.

A phone without eSIM support

A mainland physical SIM can provide domestic data and a Chinese number, but do not rely on it alone for WhatsApp or TikTok. If you have one SIM slot and your home provider confirms China roaming, keep that home SIM as the main connection; buy a local SIM only if you need its local number or domestic service.

With a companion, their travel-eSIM hotspot is a practical extra connection if the plan allows sharing. If you are travelling alone and your phone cannot use eSIM, do not buy an eSIM for it: arrange compatible home roaming or a separate usable device before leaving. If neither is available, plan on local communication and tell your contacts an alternative way to reach you.

If all data routes fail, use the saved Chinese address, tickets and hotel telephone number at a staffed taxi, transport or hotel desk. For a provider fault, keep the order, device/OS, location, time, chosen network and error to give support. Airalo also warns that individual apps may reject routing or location; an eSIM connection alone does not settle every app’s availability.
