Preserve the rest of an airline ticket after a cancellation
If the airline cancels one flight and you want to keep the rest, request a change or a refund limited to the affected part, and name every flight you want preserved. Do not authorise “cancel the whole booking” or a full-ticket refund unless that is your decision. Get the issuer to confirm the remaining reservations and electronic ticket coupons—the flight-by-flight parts of your ticket—in writing.
First identify the ticket and the operation you want
Situation: One through/return ticket, airline cancels a sector
What to request: Ask for the airline-disruption remedy for the cancelled sector and affected connection, while keeping the named unaffected flights. Ask whether a partial refund/reissue is possible and what it does to the rest.
Situation: You voluntarily want to cancel or skip a sector
What to request: Ask the issuer to quote the change or partial-refund conditions first. Fare recalculation or loss of later ticket coupons can occur; do not just miss the flight.
Situation: Genuinely separate tickets
What to request: Handle the cancelled ticket with its issuer and verify the other ticket independently. Cancellation of one does not itself establish a refund or protection on the other. Different ticket numbers can still be linked/conjunction tickets, so have the issuer confirm they are separate contracts.
Situation: You want to abandon the entire trip
What to request: Ask for a written quote covering all unused tickets/sectors, taxes and seller fees, then approve only the scope you intend. A refund of the full remaining ticket means those flight coupons cannot also be used.
Air China’s current conditions require ticketed flights to be used in sequence (2.1.3). They also permit cancellation of onward/return reservations if a traveller misses a flight without first telling Air China to preserve the later seat (3.1.1.3). An airline-cancelled flight is not the same as voluntarily skipping an operating flight, but you still need the disrupted ticket correctly reissued or otherwise handled. A return flight displaying “confirmed” is not, by itself, proof that all ticket requirements are resolved. Source 1.
Air China outbound cancelled, return still appears valid
For the Singapore→Shanghai outbound cancellation with the return still visible, decide whether you still want to travel and retain Shanghai→Singapore. The original traveller later reported refunding the whole trip; that outcome does not prove a different traveller can refund only the outbound and keep the original return fare unchanged.
- Retrieve the original receipt and cancellation notice. Write down the issuing seller, ticket number, booking reference and both flight/date combinations. Mark the outbound “airline cancelled” and the return “keep”, rather than treating the whole booking as cancelled.
- If bought directly from Air China, contact Air China for the change/refund. If bought from an agent, ask that issuer to handle the ticket and ask Air China to confirm the cancelled flight and permitted remedy. Ask for an outbound alternative that preserves the return before accepting a refund.
- If you plan to buy a new outbound yourself, first ask how the original return will remain valid when the first coupon is not flown: preserved reservation, ticket reissue/revalidation, any fare adjustment, and exactly which coupons would be refunded. Do not assume the return survives automatically.
- After the agreed operation, obtain the updated receipt or written coupon list. Check that the retained return still has the correct passenger, flight/date and valid ticket status. If a new ticket number was issued, use that for the next check.
Air China contacts when the main hotline does not answer
Where/why: Global service
Verified official entry: +86-10-95583, published 24 hours. Start from Air China’s official site or the contact links in Source 2.
Where/why: Singapore local fallback
Verified official entry: Singapore sales office: +65-6225-2177; sinoffice@airchina.com for a written record. The directory does not establish an immediate email response or after-hours service.
Where/why: Singapore call-centre option
Verified official entry: 80086100999 is listed as an international number, 08:30–18:00 daily. The Singapore operator’s international prefix is required; follow your operator’s dialing format. The local sales-office number above avoids guessing that prefix.
Where/why: Japan, for the Japan–Germany case below
Verified official entry: 0570-0-95583 within Japan; Japanese support 09:00–01:00 Japan time, English published 24 hours. If the local number cannot be reached, use the global number.
Where/why: Flight departs soon and telephone support fails
Verified official entry: Use the airline’s staffed ticket/transfer service at the departure airport if accessible, with the ticket and notice. Ask for a case number and explicit instructions about the flights to keep; a sent email alone does not prove a ticket change was completed.
Use a phone or live support channel for a time-critical operation and request the written result afterwards. Air China’s conditions provide for a written disruption certificate (8.2.4); ask for it as well. If you decide to buy a replacement before the original case is resolved, treat its cost and the original refund as separate financial risks, retain the records and still tell the issuer which original flights must remain. No replacement-cost reimbursement is promised here.
Japan–China cancellations and a Hong Kong alternative
The Japan resident booked Nagoya→Beijing→Germany and return through Flight Network. After the first cancellation the agent offered Haneda→Frankfurt; the following day Beijing→Nagoya was also cancelled and the agent said it could not find an alternative. An offered replacement is not proof of a reissued ticket, and “cancel the entire flight” is too ambiguous to approve when any part is still needed.
- Open Flight Network’s My Bookings with the booking email and order number. Use Manage Trip to see conditions and Contact Us for the support channels linked to that booking. The order number is in the original confirmation email; check spam if needed. Ask its change team to handle this as airline disruption, not a voluntary cancellation.
- Ask whether Haneda→Frankfurt was merely offered or actually ticketed. If ticketed, obtain its ticket number and list every remaining German/Japanese return sector. Request alternatives for the cancelled Beijing→Nagoya sector while preserving that outbound and all usable return sectors.
- Ask Flight Network to obtain Air China’s authorised alternatives or ticket-handling instructions if it cannot rebook. Air China can explain the disruption remedy; the issuing seller normally carries out the change/refund in its ticketing record. Current Air China conditions also permit requesting an involuntary refund through Air China or the original purchase channel, so “agent-issued” is not a reason to abandon the carrier escalation.
- If no acceptable itinerary is available, request the exact refund scope and amount, remaining ticket status, agency fees and expected processing steps before deciding. Do not assume a whole-ticket refund leaves the replacement Haneda flight active.
Would routing through Hong Kong solve it?
No one can promise that an unspecified future Hong Kong flight will operate. A Japan→HKG→Germany journey containing no mainland stop removes the direct Japan–mainland-China leg from that proposed route; that is a route distinction, not a prediction of cancellation risk. Check both outbound and return flight details: some options marketed as “via Hong Kong” may still contain a mainland connection or separate tickets.
Before choosing a Hong Kong alternative: Exact airport codes, dates and operating carriers on every leg
Decision it changes: Reject an option that still contains the mainland sector you intended to avoid. Marketing carrier alone does not identify who operates the flight.
Before choosing a Hong Kong alternative: One through ticket or separate contracts; current booking status
Decision it changes: Prefer a through-ticket connection when the goal is to retain airline handling after an inbound disruption. It still does not guarantee operation.
Before choosing a Hong Kong alternative: Baggage through-check and whether airport entry/recheck is required
Decision it changes: If self-transfer requires collecting bags or entering Hong Kong, establish the traveller’s entry eligibility and time needed before buying; nationality is not known here.
Before choosing a Hong Kong alternative: Who handles future changes and the refund/change terms
Decision it changes: Compare the final terms and total with the original issuer’s disruption alternative before accepting a replacement. Separate tickets need an independently viable connection and budget for a missed onward flight.
Send this instruction before anyone cancels the ticket
English: This is an airline cancellation of [flight/date]. I want to keep [each remaining flight/date], including [return flight]. Please do not process a full-ticket refund or cancel those reservations. Please confirm the issuing carrier, current ticket numbers and status of each coupon. Quote the available involuntary change or limited-refund option, any fare/agency charges, and whether reissue is needed to keep the remaining journey valid. I will choose after seeing the exact scope.

Refund and change boundaries
For tickets governed by Air China’s 1 July 2026 conditions, specified cancellations and disrupted connections may qualify for one involuntary change without a change handling fee; transfer to another carrier is conditional. Specified involuntary refunds cover eligible unused sectors without a carrier refund fee, excluding non-refundable government charges. That does not establish the traveller’s refund amount, agency fees, partial-ticket treatment or an unlimited choice of replacement flights. A voluntary change or later change for personal reasons can have different charges. Source 1.
Air China expressly keeps earlier purchase-date conditions applicable to earlier tickets. The 2025 Japan discussion and the Singapore traveller’s unspecified purchase date must not automatically be assessed under the July 2026 version. Have the issuer identify the governing version and any disruption-specific policy for the actual dates. Keep the cancellation notice, written scope, updated ticket and refund reference together.
Checked 13 September 2026. Ticket issue date, fare, flight dates, current coupon status, authorised rerouting and settlement remain personal variables. The steps above preserve a usable decision path without promising that every return can be kept at its original fare, that any refund is free in all respects, or that a Hong Kong replacement cannot be cancelled.
