Longmen's Buddhist caves south of town and the museum, palace sites and old-city lanes are distinct visits. For a mixed first stay, allow two full sightseeing days and three Luoyang hotel nights: protect Longmen as one outing, choose a museum and palace-city combination for the other, and leave from the station on your actual ticket.

Choose among these eight places; a two-day stay uses only a few. #1 needs its own outward and return leg; #7 and #8 each need a separate half-day.
How long, and what goes together
Default: three hotel nights, two full sightseeing days. Arrival evening can take #5 if the park's entry terms and hotel drop-off work; a late arrival is simply dinner near the hotel. Longmen uses one protected full outing. On the other full day, use the reserved museum and one central palace choice; leave the following morning from the exact rail or air terminal.

#1 alone: allow the 3–4 hour site walk, 20–25 minutes from the service area or the paid short shuttle, and both city road legs; the cave ticket is unsuitable for a rail layover. #2 → #3: allow about 4–6 hours including a cross-city road leg, then choose the Yingtian exterior or an interior product that accepts the traveller's document. #3 → #4: the nearby palace sites can share an evening only if both interior entries and the return remain workable. #5 → #6: old-city lanes and the canal museum need a separate local ride and museum admission before its verified last entry.
With two hotel nights, keep #1 and either #2 or the old-city exterior; an early arrival, valid cave ticket and buffered train are prerequisites. Book ahead in the order that protects the stay
Fix the inbound and outbound station names. On 12306, 洛阳龙门 and 洛阳 are distinct. Keep the hotel address and the return route to the named terminal.
Secure #1 Longmen. The operator sells the CNY 90 full timed ticket; its seasonal page and ticket page disagree on September's last check. Use a morning slot and resolve a passport-form failure with the ticket centre before setting a tight train.
Reserve #2 museum for an open date. Its official WeChat/passport rule is explicit; a successful reservation and the original passport are required. #8 has its own documented reservation. For #6 use the official WeChat channel named in the city register; confirm a current passport booking and gate route there before putting it in a fixed day.
Choose one optional palace interior. The city museum list gives 应天门's named booking channels and 0379-65063201; the Mingtang operator gives #4 its separate 0379-61109905. Get the live product, passport/QR route and signed gate from the correct venue, or use the public exterior. For #5, the city park line must establish whether admission is free, booked and passport-capable.
Only then add #7. The municipal visitor line can establish the temple's current ticket, passport route and hours; secure the eastern return before using an added hotel night.
Where to stay: one Luolong base or an old-town trade-off
Default: Luolong near 市民之家 / 开元大道. It makes Line 2 to 龙门高铁站 direct and keeps the southern museum and Longmen road legs manageable. Holiday Inn Express Luoyang City Center · 洛阳开元智选假日酒店 lists 洛龙区金城寨街28号 and the Citizen's Home metro area; the operator lists no local or airport shuttle. Compare the room's actual total, staffed arrival and passport reception with the hotel, then save its Chinese door pin.
Choose old city around 丽景门 if evening streets outweigh the rail spine.Home Inn Select Luoyi Ancient City Yingtian Gate · 如家精选洛阳洛邑古城应天门店 lists 老城区丽景门井胡同29号 and marks foreign-guest reception. That listing is an untested booking clue; the price is a longer southward ride to Longmen and 龙门 high-speed rail. The passport hotel guide gives the shared booking and refusal steps.
Getting to Luoyang and the hotel door
洛阳龙门站: the high-speed gateway is south of the old city and separate from the cave gate. The metro operator lists 龙门高铁站 and 市民之家 on Line 2; board the 二乔路-bound train for the Luolong base, then walk from the hotel-side exit with the saved Chinese address. Its fare rule starts at CNY 2 for up to 6 km and rises by distance; use the station's fare display for this pair. Allow an editorial 45–60 minutes from train arrival to a Luolong hotel door with bags and station exit, rather than treating platform-to-platform time as a transfer promise. A designated licensed taxi/ride pickup is the late-arrival alternative.
洛阳站: conventional rail is nearer the northern centre. Line 2 serves 洛阳火车站; use it toward 市民之家 for the default base or a licensed car to the old-town hotel. The city described a station tourist loop in 2025, but it supplies no current last run. Allow an editorial 45–75 minutes to reach and enter the booked hotel with luggage; the fare for a car must come from the actual dispatch.
洛阳北郊机场 (LYA): the airport lies north of both rail gateways. The 2025 city presentation described an airport shuttle, without a live September 2026 departure or fare. Use its signed current stop if operating, otherwise a licensed airport taxi or prearranged ride to the full hotel address. Budget an editorial 60–90 minutes from landing through luggage and road to the hotel; the operator's meter or booking quote is the fare, and the hotel offers no airport shuttle.
Getting around without losing the return
Line 2 is the Luolong-to-high-speed rail spine; Line 1 crosses the older east–west city and serves 应天门, 洛邑古城 and 杨湾. The metro operator's route and fare page names stations and tickets, including single journeys, its app and supported payment cards. Follow the actual station exit to each entrance. A short car leg can be more useful than a metro transfer for #2, #6 or luggage.
The 2025 city transport presentation listed 龙门高铁站 → 龙门石窟, old-city and 杨湾 → 白马寺 tourist shuttles. Those are route candidates; current schedules are separate. For #1 or #7 save the service area/square and last ride back before going in; a prearranged car must name the actual pickup after the one-way cave route.
Sights in detail: enter, experience, leave
1. Longmen Grottoes · 龙门石窟
Make this the protected outing: West Hill's Lu She Na at Fengxian and the earlier Binyang/Guyang caves carry the city's strongest first-visit reason.
Hours
The operator's seasonal page shows March–October entry from 08:00, last check 18:00 and clearance 19:00; November–February last check is 17:00 and clearance 18:00. Its separate ticket page gives 17:00 last check and 18:00 clearance without a season. These official pages conflict for a September afternoon. Book a morning entry; use 17:00 as the conservative latest check until the ticket centre resolves the date.
Tickets
CNY 90 full on the operator overview. Timed real-name purchase and four ticket scans are on the ticket page; its 17:00 last check / 18:00 clearance is the earlier of two official cutoffs, not a universal September rule. A foreign-passport checkout path is not established by these pages. The ticket centre, 0379-69920437, can resolve a failed document field before the southward trip.

Getting there
From 洛阳龙门站 the operator gives 4 km/about 10 minutes by car or about 42 minutes on bus 71 to the scenic area. The northeast service area then has a 25-minute walk or CNY 10 one-way shuttle to the entry gate; northwest is 20 minutes or the same shuttle fare. Bus 81 from 洛阳站 is about 65 minutes before the final approach.
How to visit
Named service area → signed entry gate → 西山石窟 and 奉先寺 → 东山石窟 only while the return fits → 香山寺/白园 if open → signed exit → the agreed pickup or operating bus → Luoyang hotel. The UNESCO account explains the sculpture; the river boat is a separate optional purchase.
Permanent displays are free; some commercial temporary exhibitions are separate. Reserve by the museum's official WeChat under the same passport details, then bring the original passport to the gate; the visitor notice explicitly accepts it after booking.
A car to the 聂泰路 visitor entrance is the simple choice from a Luolong base. The museum also lists bus 77 from 洛阳站 to 洛阳博物馆站; follow the stop sign to the visitor gate and keep a return to the same hotel.
How to visit
Original-passport reservation scan → 河洛文明 → one open sancai or treasure room → signed exit. Pair with #3 only after allowing the cross-city road leg.

3. Yingtian Gate · 应天门
See the Sui–Tang ceremonial axis in the city; an exterior look gives the urban scale, while the archaeology and upper-level museum require a separate product.
Hours
The city museum register lists 09:00–22:00 and 21:30 last ticket check for 应天门遗址博物馆. It is a dated register, so use its 邂逅隋唐 channel or 0379-65063201 for the visit-date interior slot. The public-street exterior can be viewed without museum entry.
Tickets
The city register lists CNY 60 for the Yingtian interior, a dated reference rather than today's checkout quote. It names 邂逅隋唐 and the 隋唐洛阳城景区 mini-program as purchase routes and 0379-65063201 as the visitor line. Obtain the live fare, passport/QR route and signed gate there. No museum ticket is needed to see the exterior from public streets.
Time
1 h outside; longer with interior (editorial allowance)
Use 应天门站 on Line 1 or a car to 定鼎南路与中州中路; follow the venue's current visitor-entrance sign for a booked interior. Save the hotel return rather than relying on a projection or event ending.
How to visit
Public approach → palace-gate exterior → signed museum entrance if booked → site displays/upper view → signed exit. A projection is event-specific; leave in time for the saved hotel return.
Choose this after #3 if the palace site's interior interpretation matters more than another old-city lane; the two tickets are separate.
Hours
The operator's 20 January 2026 programme listed 09:00–22:30, last ticket check 22:00, with event adjustments. Use its Mingtang–Tiantang line, 0379-61109905, for the visit-date opening and last check; those January hours are a dated reference.
Tickets
Mingtang–Tiantang has its own interior product and operator phone, 0379-61109905; 0379-65063201 belongs to Yingtian Gate. Resolve the live fare, foreign-passport or QR route and signed entrance through the Mingtang venue before buying. If the document route fails, keep #3's exterior and another open city sight.

Getting there
From #3, use the signed route within the palace-city district; from a Luolong hotel use Line 2 to 解放路, then Line 1 toward 应天门 or a direct car. Follow the venue's own entry sign.
How to visit
Signed Mingtang entrance → Ming Hall archaeological interpretation → Tiantang reconstruction/display → signed exit. Keep #3's exterior if the interior product or identity route fails.
5. Luoyi Ancient City · 洛邑古城
This is the flexible lane-and-meal contrast to the palace axis. It is most useful after arrival when a long museum visit would be unrealistic.
Hours
The city A-level scenic list gives a visitor line, 0379-60696969, but no current closing time. Ask for the travel-date gate hours before making this the evening plan.
Tickets
The city list establishes the park and contact, not today's free-entry or reservation rule. Ask 0379-60696969 for the current admission, booking channel and foreign-passport path; public streets around 丽景门 remain an evening choice if park entry is unavailable.

Getting there
Line 1's 洛邑古城站 reaches the district; go onward to the city-listed 九都路新街路口 and follow the park's open-entrance signs. A car can use that named junction. Save a return from the gate actually used.
How to visit
Signed open entrance if admitted → 文峰塔 and lanes → meal → signed exit and saved pickup. If booking or entry fails, use 丽景门's public streets and return to the same hotel.
6. Sui–Tang Grand Canal Culture Museum · 隋唐大运河文化博物馆
Choose the canal story when a second indoor history stop is useful: objects and the grain-shipping display explain why this inland capital was linked to other cities.
Hours
The 2025 city museum register, row 3 lists regular Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–17:00, last entry 16:30, with Monday closure except holidays. The museum's 2026 Mid-Autumn notice extends 25–27 September only to 19:00, last entry 18:30. Use the date's museum slot for any other holiday or later visit.
Tickets
The 2025 city register names the museum's official WeChat timed reservation and 0379-65556001 / 65556161. Check the live product's fare, passport field and original-document or QR gate with that channel before relying on entry; if it cannot confirm them, keep the river-side exterior and #2 museum.
Use a car from the old-city hotel to the 滨河北路/新伊大街 junction, then walk east to the museum entrance. From #5 allow a separate river-side road leg; the two entrances require separate arrivals.
How to visit
Signed visitor entrance → 国运泱泱 main display → 一粒米的漕运之旅 if operating → same visitor exit. Return to the hotel before the evening street choice.
7. White Horse Temple · 白马寺
Add this when the temple's religious history is central to the trip; its eastern transfer makes it a separate choice from Longmen and the palace axis.
Hours
The municipal scenic list gives 0379-63789090, but no current closing time. Obtain the travel-date temple hours before taking the separate eastern road leg.
Tickets
The temple's signed 29 April 2026 notice names 洛阳白马寺 on WeChat as its official booking channel and rejects third-party resale. Use that channel or the city-listed temple line, 0379-63789090, for the live fare, passport/QR choice and visit-date window before the eastern trip.

Getting there
The city's 2025 transport presentation described 杨湾站 on Line 1 to 释源广场 by shuttle. Use a dated operating return or a prearranged car from the same square; a one-way scenic bus needs a separate return.
How to visit
释源广场 → official ticket gate → main temple courtyards → the same square or agreed pickup → Luoyang hotel. Respect posted dress and photography rules.
8. Luoyang Ancient Tombs Museum · 洛阳古墓博物馆
Choose this for archaeology beyond the general museum: relocated tomb chambers and murals are a different, slower indoor visit.
Hours
The museum guide lists May–October 09:00–17:00, last admission 16:30, Tuesday–Sunday; Monday closes except public holidays. Its winter panel says 16:30 closing while another section says 17:00, so use the museum’s visit-date notice for November–April.
Tickets
Permanent collection free. The museum's booking guide says reserve on its website or official WeChat; after reservation, passport holders show the matching document to staff and scan the booking QR.
The museum lists bus 83 from 洛阳站, or Line 2 to 邙岭站 then bus 83. From a Luolong hotel, a direct car to 机场路6号 avoids a long rail-and-bus chain; secure the return before entry.
How to visit
Passport/QR scan → 洛阳历代古墓集萃 → 河南古墓壁画 → signed exit and saved return. Its northern location makes it a swap for #4–6 after a full Longmen outing.
Day trips: decide whether to keep another Henan base
Dengfeng/Shaolin · 登封/少林寺 is a separate road-and-ticket decision. A Luoyang same-day return is reasonable only after a dated road pickup, temple entry, visit length and return to the Luoyang hotel or exact onward station are secured; this guide has no verified through service or fare. The Henan branch guide treats Dengfeng as its own two-night base when temple landscape is the primary reason for the trip. Peony gardens are a spring choice whose bloom and admission vary by year; omit them from a September day.
Food and season that alter the visit
Try Luoyang Water Banquet · 洛阳水席 when a shared, unhurried meal fits, or beef/lamb breakfast soup near the hotel before an early departure. The city tourism account distinguishes banquet dishes from everyday bowls. Read the menu, ingredients and posted total before ordering. Peonies are a spring decision: the 2026 festival's April dates cannot predict a later year's bloom. At Longmen, heat, rain or icy paths can shorten the exposed river walk, so choose the signed open section and keep the booked ride home.
If a ticket, gate or return breaks
Longmen document or morning slot fails: call the ticket centre; use the museum/palace block while a new slot is sought, or cut Luoyang to the city stay. No unreserved cave entry is assumed.
Museum booking or Monday fails: move the reservation to an open date or use Yingtian's public exterior and #5's public streets. Skip third-party “guaranteed free entry” offers.
Paid palace or Luoyi entry fails: take the palace-gate view from public streets and the old-city public lanes; keep the hotel return and the next full outing.
White Horse ticket or eastern return fails: use the booked #2 museum, #3 public exterior or old-city lanes; add #4 or #6 only if their current entry terms work.
Rail or flight changes: reread 洛阳龙门站 versus 洛阳站 on the issued ticket and reprice the exact hotel-to-terminal leg. A late inbound arrival loses the optional old-city evening; preserve the protected Longmen morning.
Sources and verification boundary
Venue, transport and hotel sources reviewed . The city's 2024 scenic list supports park locations and visitor lines. Its 2025 museum register gives a dated Yingtian fare and hours and the Grand Canal museum's ordinary hours, address and reservation channel; the canal museum's 25–27 September 2026 holiday notice extends those hours for those dates only. The Mingtang operator's January 2026 programme gives that venue's separate phone and a dated hours reference. Canal museum passport booking still needs current operator confirmation. Current palace, Luoyi and White Horse admission and passport/QR routes, active gates and later holiday hours still belong to the named venue channels. Longmen's two official pages disagree on September's late cutoff; this guide uses the earlier line as a conservative planning bound. Check the issued ticket and named return before travel; the trip planner handles the wider onward route.
