Inner Mongolia: choose Hohhot, Ulagai or Hulunbuir
For a first three-night stay with fewer rural transfers, use Hohhot 呼和浩特 as one base. Keep the city and nearby Chilechuan 敕勒川 grassland edge only if the dated return ride works. This gives up the wide Morgele meadow reached from Hailar 海拉尔 and the remote Ulagai 乌拉盖 landscape reached through Holingol 霍林郭勒. Choose either distant branch after finding its seasonal opening and arranging the last road leg and reverse journey.
These are three separate short trips across Inner Mongolia. The Hailar branch covers one Hulunbuir meadow day, and the Ulagai branch covers one eastern Xilingol area. Each larger region needs its own extended route. Night counts below are planning allocations; use dated operator schedules, admissions and seasonal conditions.
Choose one Inner Mongolia branch
Decide whether you want a city with a nearby grassland edge, a broad Hulunbuir meadow day, or a more remote eastern Xilingol trip. Each choice changes the gateway, local return and best season.
CITY + NEARBY GRASSLAND · 3 NIGHTS
Hohhot 呼和浩特 and Chilechuan 敕勒川
Choose an old-city stay and one nearby grassland-edge day with one hotel. This has fewer rural transfers than the other branches, but it leaves the distant Morgele meadow and Ulagai landscapes for separate trips.
Hard stop: Hohhot's airport transfer is changing. A city bus report proves a route existed in summer 2026, while the stop and hour need the current operator timetable. Read the airport on the flight ticket before choosing the city hotel; obtain the grassland bus’s last return departure or prebook a car before using the outward bus.
Choose the Hulunbuir meadow landscape when a site visit and Hailar round trip work in the actual season. A single Hailar base leaves a full scenic day and weather or transport slack; the Erguna–Manzhouli circuit needs another route and nights.
Hard stop: Meadow scenery, site access and ground rides change with season and weather. Obtain this date's open area from the operator and book the return vehicle before buying a non-refundable rural day; the old bus notice and 2026 site report give background rather than dated departures.
Choose one eastern Xilingol grassland area only when the chosen Ulagai site, town loop and gateway rides run on your travel dates. The three-night town stay allows arrival, one landscape visit and a weather spare; it uses a different gateway and region from Hohhot or Hulunbuir.
Hard stop: Choose this only within the selected site's actual visiting season and with a loop return shown by its operator or a prebooked taxi or hotel-car return, especially in late September or winter. Road controls and weather can interrupt both directions.
Each line is its own journey. Arrows show sequence; use the operators for distance, service, duration, fare and entry. Each branch needs its own gateway and return.

An airport or scenic-name ticket still leaves the hotel, park entry, internal ride and trip back to arrange. Arrange each leg with its current operator before fixing the final night.
Nights that make one branch work
Use one of these three short allocations. A larger Hulunbuir or Xilingol circuit needs additional bases and transport arranged for those dates; assign more bases and nights to the longer route.
CITY + NEARBY GRASSLAND · 3 NIGHTS
Hohhot 呼和浩特 and Chilechuan 敕勒川
Why this branch: Choose an old-city stay and one nearby grassland-edge day with one hotel. This has fewer rural transfers than the other branches, but it leaves the distant Morgele meadow and Ulagai landscapes for separate trips.
Hohhot 呼和浩特 3 nightsUse one city base for arrival, Dazhao/old-city time and a Chilechuan day with a bus that serves both directions on your date or a booked car.
Entry, transfer and return: Enter and leave through the exact airport or railway station on your tickets. If both the flight and current operator still use Baita airport (呼和浩特白塔国际机场), Metro Line 1's 坝堰（机场） station can lead toward Hohhot East (呼和浩特东站) and Xinhua Square (新华广场), subject to your arrival and reverse service times and a last ride or walk to the hotel. Shengle airport (呼和浩特盛乐国际机场) is a different terminal: read the airport notice and arrange its own ground ride; the Baita metro instructions apply to Baita. For Chilechuan, obtain the current grassland sightseeing or city-bus stop and both trips from the operator, or prebook a taxi or hotel car for both directions. Return to the same city base and the booked exit terminal.
When to cut it: If the Chilechuan return is unworkable, keep the Hohhot city day and drop the grassland edge. With only two nights or a late arrival, lose that optional day before cutting the protected departure leg.
WIDE MEADOW · 3 NIGHTS
Hailar 海拉尔 and Morgele River 莫尔格勒河
Why this branch: Choose the Hulunbuir meadow landscape when a site visit and Hailar round trip work in the actual season. A single Hailar base leaves a full scenic day and weather or transport slack; the Erguna–Manzhouli circuit needs another route and nights.
Hailar 海拉尔 3 nightsStay by a booked Hailar city pickup. Keep one full Morgele day, one arrival or city period and time to protect the booked exit.
Entry, transfer and return: Use the named Hailar flight or railway station on your ticket; the airport is now named Hulunbuir Hailar International Airport (呼伦贝尔海拉尔国际机场). Arrange airport or station to the Hailar hotel and back. For the Morgele River Scenic Area (莫尔格勒河景区), ask the current operator for its designated visitor entry and any required internal vehicle. Book a taxi or hotel-arranged car from Hailar to that entry and back on the same day. Leave from the booked Hailar gateway; an early flight may require a final night close enough for its check-in.
When to cut it: If the site or reverse road ride fails, keep a Hailar city stay or move this scenic day within the three nights. Drop the Morgele visit if the return remains unsecured; Erguna or Manzhouli needs a separately planned route.
REMOTE EASTERN XILINGOL · 3 NIGHTS
Holingol 霍林郭勒 → Ulagai 乌拉盖
Why this branch: Choose one eastern Xilingol grassland area only when the chosen Ulagai site, town loop and gateway rides run on your travel dates. The three-night town stay allows arrival, one landscape visit and a weather spare; it uses a different gateway and region from Hohhot or Hulunbuir.
Bayan Hushuozhen 巴彦胡硕镇 3 nightsUse a town-side pickup for one selected Ulagai stop such as Nine Bend Bay (九曲湾), with a spare day and a protected route back to Holingol.
Entry, transfer and return: First secure the real dated inbound and outbound Holingol airport (霍林郭勒机场) itinerary. Arrange the airport-to-Bayan Hushuozhen ride and its reverse; the 2025 airport bus opening establishes a corridor from 2025; obtain today’s service from its operator. At the town visitor-service centre or Renfang Square (人防广场), obtain the scenic loop’s current outward stop, selected site's access and return to town, or prebook a taxi or hotel car for the round trip. The Ulagai authority's town-based touring route covers several long road legs across the area. An early Holingol departure may require the final night at that gateway instead of the town.
When to cut it: If the Holingol–town link, site opening, scenic-loop return or safe road fails, drop Ulagai and remain at the safe gateway or change dates. Xilinhot and other Xilingol areas need their own gateway and overnight plan.
Holingol: airport, town and Ulagai are different legs
The Ulagai authority's town-based route spans several road segments. Its transport index lists a September 2026 increase in Holingol–Ulagai intercity buses, but still leaves airport pickup and a return seat to arrange. The 2026 scenic-loop notice gives town pickup points and landscape stops; obtain the current outward, selected stop and reverse. The 2025 airport-bus opening records a past corridor; obtain the current Holingol ↔ town departures or arrange a car.

City gateway
Hohhot · 呼和浩特
Choose Dazhao and the old-city streets for an urban stop with one hotel and an optional nearby grassland day.
Boundary: The actual air or rail terminal fixes your arrival. Baita airport's Metro Line 1 route applies only to Baita airport.
City-edge grassland
Chilechuan · 敕勒川
Use a nearby grassland landscape without adding a remote overnight, if the dated outward and return ride both work.
Boundary: A sightseeing route reported in summer gives no last bus for today, grassland access or a deep-steppe experience.
Hulunbuir gateway
Hailar · 海拉尔
Stay in Hailar for a Morgele day and an actual air or rail exit from the same city.
Boundary: The terminal, hotel and Morgele visitor arrival are separate points. This branch covers one meadow day within Hulunbuir.
Meadow scenic day
Morgele River · 莫尔格勒河
Choose the river landscape for its wide meadow setting when the operator admits visitors on your date.
Boundary: Get the designated entry, internal vehicle rule and booked Hailar car round trip before leaving the city.
Ulagai approach
Holingol · 霍林郭勒
Use its actual airport ticket and protect the connection onward to the Ulagai town base and back.
Boundary: Holingol airport is a separate point from Bayan Hushuozhen and Nine Bend Bay. A dated flight alone still leaves the rural leg to arrange.
Eastern Xilingol base
Bayan Hushuozhen and Ulagai · 巴彦胡硕镇 / 乌拉盖
Sleep in town, select one open grassland stop and obtain the town-loop return departure before leaving it.
Boundary: The local authority standardised the town name as 巴彦胡硕镇; older 巴音胡硕镇 may still appear in records. Ulagai is one eastern Xilingol area, separate from Hulunbuir.
Before booking, and what to drop
Before paying for a rural night: choose one branch; name the actual arrival and exit terminals; ask the current site or bus operator about season, entry, outward and last return; reserve a taxi or hotel-car fallback if needed; then choose the hotel base that serves the real exit.
Airport transfer or Chilechuan return changes
Read whether a Hohhot flight uses Baita or Shengle when ticketing and again before departure. If the expected city transfer has changed, arrange a documented replacement to the hotel and reverse to the airport. If the Chilechuan bus cannot bring you back on your date, prebook a taxi or hotel car for both directions, or spend that day in Hohhot instead.
Hulunbuir site, season or road changes
The 2026 cultural-authority winter safety notice requires travellers to review seasonal scenic access and transport. For a Morgele day in any season, obtain the current operator's entry and vehicle rule, and book a same-day Hailar return. If weather or the ride fails, keep Hailar as the safe base, move the scenic day if a valid opening remains, or drop it; Erguna or Manzhouli need new nights and a longer circuit.
Ulagai stop or reverse road fails
Especially in late September and outside the main visiting season, select Ulagai only if that site and the return loop or booked vehicle actually run. A 2026 transport-bureau storm report is a dated road-control example. Read current road and operator notices. Stay at the safe gateway or change dates if the full Holingol–town–site and reverse chain remain unsecured.
Continue with the branch you chose
For Hohhot, use the airport on your issued ticket and find Chilechuan bus times in both directions or arrange a car. For Hailar, settle the Morgele entry and book a same-day car return. For Ulagai, obtain the Holingol–town timetable and the selected scenic stop’s return, or arrange a car, before choosing the town hotel.
