The historic centre offers several different visits within a relatively small area. The Palace Museum shows the scale and spaces of the Ming and Qing imperial court. Tiananmen Square is a civic space with its own entry checks. The National Museum of China is a separate museum visit. To either side of the former imperial complex are places for ancestral and state rituals, a hilltop view, and lakeside gardens. They serve different interests and have separate admission rules. Beijing’s Central Axis was added to the World Heritage List in 2024, but that designation does not make every museum or park in this area part of the inscribed property. This guide covers the Imperial Core: the Palace Museum, Tiananmen Square, the National Museum, Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, the Imperial Ancestral Temple, Zhongshan Park, Jingshan Park and Beihai Park. Qianmen and the Temple of Heaven belong to the separate southern-axis area. These names describe choices, not a promise that all eight fit into one day.

This page begins after you have decided that the imperial core is a serious option; you can still choose the museum, Palace, parks or civic space independently. A Palace reservation is covered separately in the passport booking guide; it does not tell you how to spend your time inside the Palace.

A useful first choice

First visit, one sightseeing day, and a confirmed Palace Museum ticket: make the Palace Museum your main visit. Add Jingshan Park only if you want the elevated view, have enough walking energy and have confirmed its current admission route. This combines an experience of the imperial buildings with a view of their position in the city. It leaves less time for museum collections, the memorial hall and the large gardens. Change that starting point when your interest or booking changes:

• Objects and Chinese history matter more than palace spaces: choose the National Museum as the main visit. Its Ancient China exhibition is a distinct reason to go, and it requires its own free, timed reservation. National Museum exhibitions · Visit guide
• A civic or memorial visit is your main purpose: plan Tiananmen Square and Chairman Mao Memorial Hall as separate admission tasks. A square reservation does not reserve the hall. If you already hold a valid booking for an attraction covered by the square’s published exception, check how that booking can be used for square entry. Square access rules · Memorial visitor guidance
• You want outdoor time or a gentler pace: compare Zhongshan Park’s former altar and garden with Beihai’s lake and imperial landscape. Jingshan gives the elevated view, which involves a hill. Confirm admission and actual gate access before choosing either park as an unbooked fallback.
• No Palace ticket: keep the National Museum as an alternative only if you can obtain its own reservation. For an outdoor alternative, check the park’s current gate and purchase route. If palace architecture was the reason you wanted that sold-out ticket, the National Museum's objects are not a like-for-like substitute. Consider the Temple of Heaven's three core ritual sites on another available half-day: the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, Echo Wall and Circular Mound tell a different architectural and ceremonial story, and require the appropriate combined admission on a core-open day. For Zhongshan, Jingshan and Beihai, the Beijing Municipal Administration Center of Parks said in its July 2025 published answer that first-time online real-name verification requires a Chinese mainland mobile number; a foreign number cannot complete that step. If you lack one, its published alternative is a comprehensive service window at a park gate, where staff can place an order using a valid ID document. It lists cash in CNY, BEIJING PASS and Visa/Mastercard as payment options. Check that your intended open gate has a staffed window before relying on this route; we have not tested a purchase with a foreign passport or card. Park operator’s 2025 ticketing answer

Only half a day, no museum booking, and little tolerance for uphill walking? Start with Beihai Park, provided its staffed gate confirms that you can buy the park ticket for your visit. Beijing’s newer 12345 answer says Beihai has no advance-reservation requirement and sells paper tickets at its gates. Choose a short lakeside visit from the gate that works for your arrival point, and skip the island or a full circuit if either would exceed your walking limit. This is an editorial short-visit plan, not a verified step-free route. If Beihai admission is unavailable on your date, use Zhongshan Park only after confirming an open East or West Gate and a purchase method for your passport; the old South Gate instruction is under a closure notice. Palace Museum · 故宫博物院

The Palace Museum occupies the Ming and Qing imperial palace. The buildings themselves, including the Hall of Supreme Harmony on the central line, and the collections are the main reasons to choose it. Give this visit room to breathe; a quick pass through the gates will deliver less than a focused visit. Access as checked 24 September 2026: the museum’s English visitor page lists April–October opening at 08:30–17:00, with entry ending at 16:00; November–March at 08:30–16:30, with entry ending at 15:30. It usually closes on Mondays, with holiday exceptions. Standard adult admission is listed as CNY 60 in the high season and CNY 40 in the low season; the Treasure Gallery and Clock Gallery are separately priced. It states that there are no same-day tickets and that foreign visitors use their passport number to book. Bring the original document matching the reservation and confirm the actual date and entry gate on the official channel. For staff: 故宫博物院 · 午门 (Palace Museum · Meridian Gate). Use the official booking and visitor information rather than assuming a ticket for Tiananmen Square is a Palace ticket. If you only want the Palace, the museum says you can reach Meridian Gate along the East or West Tongzi River Road from the Donghua Gate · 东华门 or Xihua Gate · 西华门 side; you do not need a separate Square visit just to reach the museum. Those side gates are approaches, not visitor entry gates. If a particular hall or exhibition matters to your choice, check current construction and temporary closures for your date. A usable first half-day inside: enter at Meridian Gate · 午门 with the passport on the booking and take the museum's current map before choosing a side gallery. Spend your first main block on the Outer Court · 前朝: the great ceremonial space and the Hall of Supreme Harmony · 太和殿, then the smaller Hall of Central Harmony · 中和殿 and Hall of Preserving Harmony · 保和殿 if their areas are open. Continue toward the Inner Court · 内廷, where Palace of Heavenly Purity · 乾清宫, Hall of Union · 交泰殿 and Palace of Earthly Tranquility · 坤宁宫 shift the story from state ceremony to court life. Finish through the Imperial Garden · 御花园 and choose the Shenwu Gate · 神武门 north exit if a separately ticketed Jingshan view still fits your energy. Choose the Donghua Gate · 东华门 east exit if you are heading back toward Wangfujing instead. The museum requires a south-to-north, one-way visit: you enter only at Meridian Gate and leave at Shenwu or Donghua; these are not interchangeable entrances. Do not route yourself through Taihe Gate · 太和门 by habit. The museum announced that this gate closed for restoration from 3 August 2026, with no reopening date in the notice. It is distinct from Hall of Supreme Harmony · 太和殿. Use the diversion and open-area map posted for your visit; ask staff how to reach the outer-court halls if the construction changes the central crossing. The museum also announced Yanxi Palace · 延禧宫 closed from 1 September to 31 October 2026. If a named hall or side area is closed, keep the open main sequence and reduce the optional branch; do not attempt a shortcut through a closed zone. Choose a collection branch only if you can give it time. The Treasure Gallery · 珍宝馆 in the Ningshou Palace sector · 宁寿宫区 concentrates Qing-court jewellery, gold, silver and jade objects alongside historic interiors. The Clock Gallery · 钟表馆 focuses on elaborate Chinese and imported clocks and watches. Each currently has a separate CNY 10 admission on top of the Palace base ticket, and each adds a side visit and walking to this half-day. If objects matter more than the ceremonial axis, choose one gallery first and shorten the hall sequence; do not assume both galleries and all major halls fit a short visit. If the add-on is unavailable, use the open palace buildings or a currently open base-admission exhibition; a sold-out gallery does not invalidate a valid base ticket. If you have closer to two hours than a half-day, choose an outer-court overview and the northbound exit, rather than promising yourself every hall and a paid side gallery. The museum itself offers two-hour, half-day and one-day route categories; our choices above are not its prescribed route, and time at security and in queues is additional. If your walking limit is strict, do not infer that the named sequence is step-free: the museum publishes a separate accessibility map and warns of historic steps and uneven surfaces. If you must leave a large bag at the museum's published storage point near Duanmen · 端门, choose your exit with the corresponding collection point in mind: the museum lists one outside Shenwu Gate and another outside Donghua Gate. Confirm the current storage and pickup rule before entry; do not walk to the wrong exit expecting to re-enter against the one-way route. Museum visitor rules

Tiananmen Square · 天安门广场

Choose the square for the scale and ceremonial arrangement of this civic space, rather than for a museum interior. The municipal visitor page lists it as free and gives 05:00–22:00 as normal opening hours. Events and security arrangements can change access, so use the current booking notice for your date. Access as checked 24 September 2026: the area authority requires a real-name booking for a dedicated visit; its rules list an entry passport or a foreigner’s residence permit for visitors from abroad, subject to the booking system’s accepted ID options. Its newer notice gives a 1–7 day advance window. The older official rule explains that holders of certain valid bookings, including the Palace Museum or National Museum, may use that booking to enter the square without a separate square reservation. That exception is for square access; it does not grant museum admission. Check the current time slot and entry point in the official square reservation system before relying on an exception. National Museum of China · 中国国家博物馆

The museum stands on the east side of Tiananmen Square and gives you a different kind of historical visit: objects and exhibitions rather than palace rooms. Its Ancient China permanent exhibition is one reason to treat this as a substantial museum choice, not an extra stop squeezed between reservations. Museum visitor guide · museum exhibitions

Access as checked 24 September 2026: general admission is free, with real-name reservations up to seven days ahead through the museum’s official channel; the published release time is 17:00 each day. Present the original ID used in booking and the confirmation at the North Gate during your booked time slot. The museum lists 09:00–17:00 with last admission at 16:00, extending to 17:30 and 16:30 respectively from June through October; it normally closes on Mondays except national public holidays. Chairman Mao Memorial Hall · 毛主席纪念堂

This is a memorial visit with its own purpose and admission. Official information describes the memorial hall and displays about leading figures of the Chinese revolution. Access as checked 24 September 2026: the memorial’s visitor notice describes free real-name reservations one to six days ahead, with normal public hours Tuesday–Sunday, 08:00–12:00. Bring the original identity document used for the booking and allow for security and restrictions on bags, cameras and liquids. Temporary announcements can change the public areas and holiday hours; use the official memorial notice for your date. We have not verified that the current online reservation flow accepts every foreign passport or offers an English interface. Confirm this before making the memorial the anchor of a short visit. Imperial Ancestral Temple · 太庙 / 北京市劳动人民文化宫

Choose this for the ceremonial architecture and the subject of imperial ancestral rites. It is a quieter, more focused heritage choice than the Palace Museum’s broad collection and court spaces. Access as checked 24 September 2026: the operator lists a CNY 2 park ticket; the historic-building area has a separate seasonal price, listed as CNY 15 in April–October and CNY 10 in November–March. It lists park hours of 06:30–20:00 in April–October and 07:00–18:00 in November–March, and historic-building hours of 09:00–17:00, normally closed Mondays outside holiday exceptions. A recent notice says the historic area returned to normal opening from 23 September after a temporary closure; check new notices for your date. We could not confirm whether the historic-area price includes the park ticket, how a foreign visitor completes payment, or whether a separate passport reservation is required. Zhongshan Park · 中山公园

This park preserves the former Altar of Soil and Grain, a different part of the ceremonial landscape from the Palace and ancestral temple. Access as checked 24 September 2026: the official English guide lists a normal adult park ticket of CNY 3, with different event pricing; from September through October it lists 06:00–21:00, last entry 20:30. Beijing’s 2026 park listing identifies a ticket window. The older municipal online guide shows a passport ID field, but the park operator’s newer answer says first-time online verification also needs a Chinese mainland mobile number; without one, use a staffed service window with valid ID. An older park guide instructs foreign visitors to use the South Gate, but the park operator announced that gate’s temporary closure from 24 August 2025 until further notice. We found no reopening notice; plan on the East or West Gate only after confirming current access and a staffed purchase window for your passport. Jingshan Park · 景山公园

Jingshan’s Wanchun Pavilion gives the elevated view back over the Palace Museum and along the Central Axis. This is the clearest visual complement to a Palace visit for someone comfortable with a hill walk. Beijing municipal park description

Access as checked 24 September 2026: the municipal guide lists 06:00–21:00 from April through October, last entry 20:30; its ordinary adult price is CNY 2, with higher event pricing possible. One older English park guide says foreign visitors must telephone a day ahead. Newer municipal answers say visitors can buy online or at a staffed ticket window with a passport, and a 2025 park-specific response confirms same-day purchase at the windows. Online real-name verification, however, requires a Chinese mainland mobile number; without one, use the staffed-window route after confirming its current gate. For staff: 景山公园. Bring the passport used for any online ticket or window purchase. Check the current gate and the slope before adding the viewpoint to a low-walking day.

Beihai Park · 北海公园

Beihai gives you a different imperial landscape: a lake, Qionghua Island and the White Pagoda, with additional garden and historic-building choices. Give it more time if you intend to explore around the water rather than using it as a quick photo stop. Beijing municipal park description

Access as checked 24 September 2026: official information lists April–October park hours of 06:00–21:00, last entry 20:30. The municipal guide lists CNY 10 for a regular adult park ticket or CNY 20 for a combined ticket in the high season; check what the combined ticket covers before buying. A newer Beijing 12345 answer says the park requires no advance reservation and offers paper tickets at gate areas, while an older English guide says foreign visitors must arrange admission by phone. The newer specific response is the better current lead, but the published guides conflict; check the official park channel for your visit date rather than counting on an untested walk-up. For staff: 北海公园 · 北京市西城区文津街1号. That is the park’s published address; choose and confirm the entrance that suits your actual route. The municipal park list includes Beihai, but the newer operator answer requires a Chinese mainland mobile number for first-time online verification. Without one, confirm a staffed service window at the gate; foreign-passport and payment success have not been field-tested here.

Make your next booking match your actual choice

1. Choose the main experience: Palace spaces, museum collections, a memorial visit or a garden. Use the other places as optional complements, not as a compulsory checklist.
2. Secure its own admission: Palace ticket, National Museum reservation, memorial reservation and dedicated square entry are different records. Keep the passport and confirmation that match each booking. Municipal parks use their own ticketing channel; online first-time verification needs a Chinese mainland mobile number, while a staffed gate window is the operator’s stated alternative for a visitor without one. 3. Check route-breaking notices for your date: the Zhongshan South Gate closure, new Palace or museum notices, inner-courtyard hours and current park ticket prompts can change a sensible plan. Check the operator notice on the day you fix bookings and again before leaving your hotel.
4. Carry the exact Chinese place and entrance names: use the bold “For staff” lines above. A park address or a square booking is not a substitute for the entrance named on your museum confirmation.
